Jazz Appreciation Month (fondly known as "JAM") was created at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. in 2002, to herald and celebrate the extraordinary heritage and history of jazz. JAM is intended to stimulate and encourage people of all ages to participate in jazz: to study the music, attend concerts, listen to jazz on radio and recordings, read books about jazz, and more. This year, for JAM 2016, the Smithsonian is exploring how jazz itself is a form of democracy – as a form of communication, as a solo or group, and as an equalizer – and celebrating the legacy of musician and bandleader, Benny Carter, who is featured on the 2016 JAM poster. Celebrate with us, collect the poster, and participate with jazz. Log onto americanhistory.si.edu/ smithsonian-jazz/jazz-appreciation-month .

Jazz 91 Preview
have you heard with Patrick wolff Monday at 9 pm 4/4 Marco Eneidi
A student of Jimmy Lyons and Sonny Simmons, the fiercely original, intelligent and intense Marco Eneidi is one of the more compelling alto saxophonists in the post-bop free jazz tradition and was a cornerstone of the free scene in the Bay Area in the 1990s.
4/11 Eric Revis
Eric Revis established himself as a powerful and engaging sideman with Betty Carter and Branford Marsalis. In the last few years, Revis has stepped into the spotlight as a bandleader. Despite his straight-ahead roots and gigs, his efforts as a leader show a fearless drive to integrate textures and approaches from across the spectrum and history of jazz.
4/18 Steve Kuhn
Pianist Steve Kuhn has been a fixture on the scene since the late 1950’s, in the 1960s he played in progressive groups led by John Coltrane, Joe Henderson and many others, and built a style that is creative and quirky while still firmly within the jazz language.
4/25 The Instant Composer’s Pool
One of the longest-running large groups in jazz history, and one of the best-kept secrets of European jazz, the ICP virtually invented their own style. Directed (and sometimes derailed) by the iconoclastic pianist Misha Mengleberg and drummer Han Bennink, the Amsterdam-based group has operated as a hub for inside and outside musicians from across continents. They sound like no other group, with a powerful and humorous style that embraces everything from early jazz and Ellington to noisy free-for-alls.

Ibrahim Maalouf
Ibrahim Maalouf has had a monumental career as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and arranger, offering fresh musical perspectives as he blends jazz and European classical music with the sounds of his native Lebanon and long-time home in France. Maalouf’s masterful use of a custom four-valve, quarter-tone trumpet allows him to incorporate the Arabic melodic modes known as maqams into his genre-blending work.
4/12 Jymie Merritt, The Forerunner
Bassist Jymie Merritt’s place on the historical register of jazz has been cemented by his work with major players like Art Blakey, Max Roach and Lee Morgan. But there’s much more music that he hasn’t received due credit for: his own. His personal polyrhythmic concept and a working ensemble called the Forerunners had a rich progressive complexity, and left a mark on many Philadelphians including his son, Mike Merritt (now the bassist on Conan O’Brien’s late-night show band). Now, Mike has taken up the mantle and reassembled the band to finally record his father’s music.
4/19 TBA 4/26 50 Years Of Monday Nights At The Vanguard
Trumpeter and composer/arranger Thad Jones and the drummer Mel Lewis found themselves with a book of big band music—and no band to perform it. So they made their own, handpicking some of New York’s top talent across age and color lines. By the time they debuted in 1966 at the famed Village Vanguard, they were already a force to be reckoned with, soon to become the most influential big band of the last 50 years.

Barbara Lea
Vocalist Barbara Lea (1929 – 2011) was a widely respected and admired interpreter of classic American popular song. She started her career in the 1950s, and the Downbeat Critic’s Poll of 1956 recognized her as “Best New Singer.” On this 1999 Piano Jazz, she joins McPartland for a tribute to songwriter Hoagy Carmichael. The conservator of Carmichael’s repertoire, Lea brings her skill to selections including Lazybones and Star Dust.
4/13 Ayako Shirasaki
Originally from Japan, pianist Ayako Shirasaki showed an early talent for jazz and classical styles. As an adult, she moved to New York where she studied with Kenny Barron and Ted Rosenthal. She has gone on to establish herself as one of New York’s finest jazz pianists. On this 2006 Piano Jazz, Shirasaki performs her compositions Far Away and Falling Leaves.
4/20 Mike Longo
Mike Longo performed his first gig at fifteen with saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, who was at that time an unknown. Since then, Longo has played with, taught, and composed for many other jazz greats, including Jimmy McPartland and he was Dizzy Gillespie’s pianist and musical director. For this 1999 Piano Jazz, he solos on Gillespie’s Con Alma and McPartland continues the tribute with her own Dizzy.
4/27 Rose Murphy
Rose Murphy (1913—1989) was a legendary singer and pianist who starred at Café Society in the heyday of New York’s jazz scene. She made history with her version of I Can’t Give You Anything But Love. In this Piano Jazz session from 1988, Murphy showcases her trademark vocal style on Cecilia. Then she teams up with McPartland for St. Louis Blues.
