Dear KCSM Members, August is a month of transition for many of us. Although summer is coming to an end, many of us are still enjoying those last moments of vacation, soaking up the great Bay Area weather and enjoying leisure time with family and friends. However, as one day turns into the next, thoughts of 'getting back to business' begin to fill our head.

For those of you, like me, that have college age children this year might have additional struggles. Students are having trouble getting into UC’s, CSU’s and yes, even finding available classes at community colleges. State budget cuts have affected us all. Larger class sizes for elementary school students, fewer elective offerings and less critical support services at high schools, and greater costs and less availability are being felt at the college level. Budget cuts have hit KCSM as well. We have reduced our staff by 25%, cut all the spending we could, and continue to look for other ways to bring in much needed additional revenue. In the last two issues of the“On-Air” guide we reported the need to eliminate the printing and mailing of the television and radio program listings as part of our cost cutting measures. Many of you have taken the time to write, email and telephone us with your thoughts and feelings on this matter, and your voices have been heard. While we are not able to financially continue the guide in its current format, upon re-evaluation we will be able to offer a greatly reduced pamphlet of program listings. Please take a moment to fill out and mail in the form on the back cover, or telephone Membership Services (650) 5246921 to let us know you would like to continue to receive the KCSM listings via postal mail in September. In other news, we will be adding the new series Connect to our Wednesday Science Night line-up. Each episode of Connect consists of different segments and moves beyond products, revealing how technology links people, shapes trends and contributes to industry, culture, design and the environment. Don't forget to read Jazz News on page J8 to learn about updates we continue to make to bring you the best services we can. We hope that you enjoy all of these changes, and we continue to strive to bring you the best in tv and radio. Sincerely,

Marilyn Lawrence General Manager

A BEVVY OF JAZZ BIRTHDAYS! By Alisa Clancy, Host A Morning Cup of Jazz

I’ll bet you know all of the celebrities, historical figures, g re a t w r i t e r s , e v e n t s a n d famous folks that were born on your birthday, don’t you? You can usually recite that list whenever called upon or just as a conversation piece. My list is short—P.T Barnum, Jean Cocteau and Huey Lewis. I’m sure it’s all about those deep, dark, cozy winters past that make August the biggest birthday month for jazz! It’s always a thrill programming in August around the anniversaries of musician’s births because every day of this month we find a top tier player, innovator or big swinger with a birthday. Here’s the short list—On the 6th, bassist Charlie Haden, vocalist Abbey Lincoln, violinist Regina Carter and reedman Buddy Collette. Multireedman (sometimes simultaneously) Rahsaan Roland Kirk on the 7th and then composer/saxophonist Benny Carter on the 8th. Drummer Jack Dejohnette turns 68 on the 9th, and then guitarist Pat Metheny is 56 on the 12th. The pianists abound! Sir George Shearing (91!) and Mulgrew Miller on the 13th, Oscar Peterson on the 15th and then Bill Evans and Mal Waldron on the 16th. Trombonist Jack Teagarden on the 20th and then it’s, “The Kid from Red Bank”, Count Basie, and trumpeter Art Farmer on the 21st. Saxophonist Wayne Shorter turns 77 on the 25th and then Wayne’s tenor predecessor and our jazz president Lester Young completes his centennial year on the 27th. We’ll round out the month with vocalist Dinah Washington and Charlie Parker on the 29th. If you’d like to find out which jazz musicians share your birthday go to www.allaboutjazz.com and click on “more birthdays” in the lower right hand corner of their home page. Put in your date and see who pops up. Your list may just get a little longer …and hipper! And make sure you tune in to Jazz 91 throughout the month to hear birthday tributes to these jazz greats as well as others.

This week we hear what the Swing Era was like from the perspective of the teenage diaries of Bob Inman, author of Swing Era Scrapbook. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and an all-star cast perform pieces from Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, and more.

Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 8/2

Vocalist Rosemary Clooney For more than 40 years, Rosemary Clooney's (pictured) simple and exquisite singing style defined her career. Her dynamic career also included movie roles and a star turn in her own television show. Rosemary will always be remembered as one of America's finest jazz-based vocalists.

8/9

Percussionist Tito Puente

8/16 Pianist Oscar Peterson 8/23 Pianist Dave Brubeck

Innovative pianist/composer David Brubeck (pictured) has been a true jazz phenomenon—he and his quartet were the first instrumental group to sell over a million records. This widely popular band had several top ten chart hits, sold out concerts everywhere, and landed Brubeck on the cover of Time magazine. We will explore the career of Dave Brubeck from his Quartet (which made the now legendary "Take Five" recording) through the present day, including his work in classical music.

8/30 Vocalist Ella Fitzgerald

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm 8/3

New Faces, New Strings: Lionel Loueke and Richard Bona Guitarist Lionel Loueke (pictured) and bassist Richard Bona translate the sonorities of West Africa (kora, kalimba and balafon) through strings, mouth-clicked percussion and improvised paper mutes. Individually, they have played with Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell, Salif Keita and Tito Puente; together they are helping to create a new language in jazz.

8/10 Jazz and Art I with Ted Nash and the JLCO 8/17 Jazz and Art II with Bill Frisell, Papo Vasquez, Doug Wamble and the JLCO 8/24 The San Francisco Jazz Collective 8/31 Searching Sound: Lee Konitz and Paul Motian Forbears of the 'cool sound'—alto saxophonist Lee Konitz (pictured) and drummer Paul Motian—trade notes for a study in spontaneous composition. Konitz's melodic improvisations combine with Motian's colorfully textured rhythms for a set composed in the moment and not to be missed.

O n -A ir S tudio R emodel

We have heard from many of you that you don’t like the least bit of interruption to your jazz service. Over the last few years we have added a back-up power generator, increased the reliability of our streaming services, added HD radio capabilities and now we have done some more!

Over this summer we have been in the process of some very basic remodeling. The primary control room for our on-air announcers was recently completed. When the remaining remodel is finished in the fall, we will have an additional control room which will allow for periodic repairs and upgrades to be performed as necessary without jeopardizing our on-air signal.

We are also in the process of installing new transmission lines and antenna systems which should be in service by late September. These changes will allow KCSM to have a primary and a back up antenna system.

J azz L ibrary

A couple of months ago we began the arduous task of packing up our music library, literally thousands of CD's, LP's and Box Sets in preparation for the completion of their new location, a space nearly double the size of the old library.

After new rolling shelves were installed, new carpet laid and a coat of fresh paint, the dust has finally settled (and every speck cleaned away!) and we unpacked, alphabetized and reshelved our imense collection of music.

Now, whether our on-air announcers want a new cut, an old classic or that rare gem, they can easily locate that perfect tune to keep your fingers snappin' and your toes tappin'.
