JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 8/6
Bill Evans: Piano Impressionism
8/13 Louis Jordan: Jukebox King 8/20 Zoot Sims: Brother Of Swing
No matter the tempo, no matter the rhythm section backing him, it was impossible for tenor saxophonist Zoot Sims (pictured) not to swing, even when he played by himself. Sims was one of the most natural of all jazz musicians, whose warmth, creativity and humor earned him the unreserved admiration of musicians and fans alike. He had a singular sound and style infused with a simple directness that was irresistibly Zoot Sims.
8/27 Sarah Vaughan: Vocal Virtuosity Musicians and audiences alike marveled at the ease with which Sarah Vaughan (pictured) moved up and down her four-octave range, turning even the most mundane songs into operatic riffs. Her sound possessed a full-bodied purity, with an approach not unlike an instrumentalist. Early in her career, "Sassy" cut her teeth on bebop, but she also ventured into the pop world, recording hits such as Brokenhearted Melody, Day-O, and Send in the Clowns.

B est O f T he 2011 D etroit J azz F estival Friday, August 31st 4-6pm The Detroit International Jazz Festival was founded in 1980 by Robert McCabe and the Detroit Renaissance. Jazz Fest was intended to bring people into the city and to provide all segments of the population with worldclass entertainment. It quickly became a Labor Day Weekend tradition at Hart Plaza, a city park along the Detroit River designed by Isamu Noguchi and Shuji Sadao. The 33rd annual Detroit Jazz Festival will take place from August 31st through September 3rd. Headliners include: • Sonny Rollins • Wynton Marsalis • Chick Corea and Gary Burton, with strings • Wayne Shorter • Pat Metheny • 2012 Artist in Residence, Terence Blanchard “This year, we wanted to focus on going back to traditional jazz roots. Bringing together these world-class jazz artists gives festival-goers the opportunity to experience jazz at its finest – a collaboration between artists with history, experience and a style all their own,” said Chris Collins, artistic director of the Detroit Jazz Festival. “Many of the artists joining us at the festival have worked together before and we’re reuniting them, as well as introducing unique first-time collaborations, to celebrate the culture of jazz and really show how jazz has made an impact in our region and across the nation.” The Detroit Jazz Festival is an independent, non-profit organization that presents jazz and educational workshops throughout the year. Recently voted one of the top three jazz festivals in North America in a Jazz Times Critics’ Poll, the Detroit Jazz Festival is the largest free jazz festival in the world and a major tourist attraction for the City of Detroit, with 23 percent of its audience coming from out of state. To see the full lineup, visit www.detroitjazzfest.com. Join us Friday, August 31st, from 4-6pm, for Highlights from last year’s Festival!
