JAZZSET WITH DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER Monday at 9 pm 8/4
Arturo O’Farrill and The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra O’Farrill is making his big dreams for Afro-Latin jazz come true. Hear three generations of composers, from Arturo O’Farrill’s father Chico to Arturo himself to Dafnis Prieto and Gabriel Alegría from Cuba and Peru respectively, and one big exuberant ensemble to play them.
8/11 Gretchen Parlato, The Cookers at the Caramoor Jazz Festival There’s contrast between the intimate vocal sound of Ms. Parlato and the smokin’ hot all-star Cookers playing music by band members Billy Harper and Cecil McBee, at a longrunning outdoor festival just north of New York City.
8/18 Dee Dee Bridgewater Quintet at the Caramoor Jazz Festival From Lady Sings to Blues (upbeat!) to My Favorite Things, from Billie Holiday to Besame Mucho, Dee Dee sings us a set with Craig Handy on saxophones and flute; Musical Director Edsel Gomez, piano; Michael Bowie and Kenny Phelps, bass and drums.
8/25 Juan-Carlos Formell at the Monterey Jazz Festival Guitar from Havana with shades of New Orleans, Spanish lyrics, a fourth-generation Cuban musician who left for New York, Juan-Carlos Formell and his group Johnny’s Dream Club (named for a long-ago jazz spot) create a haunting, floating musical poem. Guest Harvey Wainapel on clarinet.
JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm 8/5
Father of the Mambo: The Music of Cachao Lopez “Mambo,” translated from Kikongo (the Creole language of Cuba), means “conversation with the gods.” With Afro-Cuban rhythms and other notes from this divine conversation, Cuban bassist “Cachao” Lopez enlightened the jazz world and brought forth the mambo. Led by bassist Carlos Henriquez, the JLCO rocks Rose Theater with the ultimate “discarga” jam session, in honor of the late “Cachao.”
8/12 The Music of Mulgrew Miller & Kenny Garrett The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis celebrates the “soulful erudition” of the late pianist Mulgrew Miller and the “taut, molten” music of saxophonist Kenny Garrett. Miller’s untimely passing in May 2013 turned this concert partially into a tribute, with the JLCO premiering new arrangements of both his and Garrett’s compositions.
8/19 Joe Lovano Us 5 (Plus Two!) One of the foremost improvisers in jazz today, Saxophonist Joe Lovano propels his doubledrummer quintet, “Us Five,” into a polyrhythmic conversation, and weaves inspired solos in. Us Five features Joe Lovano (saxophone), Grammy Award winner Esperanza Spalding (bass), James Weldon (piano), Peter Slavov (bass), Otis Brown III (drums), and Francisco Mela (drums), plus special guests Lionel Loueke (guitar) and Judi Silvano (vocals).
8/26 Sounds New: Ali Jackson with Yes! Trio and Warren Wolf Group Drummer Ali Jackson and vibraphonist Warren Wolf each absorbed jazz from their childhoods. Now they are making their own marks. Jackson, the regular drummer of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, is now leading his own trio called “Yes!” Multiinstrumentalist Wolf (who learned jazz from with his father, Warren Wolf, Sr.) has gone from in-demand sideman to leader. Percussion leads in this double bill from the House of Swing.

Tune in for conversation and musical selections including his hit What the World Needs Now is Love.
8/13 Oscar Peterson Fast fingers and a hardwired sense of swing defined Peterson and made him a favorite musical partner for everyone from Ella to Dizzy to Herbie Hancock. Peterson (8/15/25 – 12/23/07) would have been 89 this year. From 1998, Peterson demonstrates the deft touch and amazing technique on his Love Ballad before joining McPartland on In a Mellow Tone.
8/20 Christian McBride A veteran Piano Jazz sideman, McBride has accompanied guests including J.J. Johnson and Cassandra Wilson. From 2001, McBride takes the spotlight as a dynamic composer and stylist who leads a new generation of jazz players. He features his bass in duet with McPartland on Alone Together and plays solo piano on Lullaby for a Ladybug.
