San Jose Jazz Summer Fest Join Jazz91 for our Live broadcasts from this year’s San Jose Jazz Summer Fest. Chris Cortez & Greg Bridges are your hosts at The Cafe Stritch on Friday night August 7th for The Rahsaan-O-Thon with Steve Turre, James Carter and a host of other Rahsaan Roland Kirk lovers beginning at 8pm. Then Sonny Buxton, Dick Conte, Melanie Berzon & Kathleen Lawton are your guides on Saturday August 8th beginning at 12:30PM from the California Theatre, with performances by John Pizzarelli Quartet, Etienne Charles, Bombay Jazz and Ernesto Oviedo with the John Santos Sextet. All Live from the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest 2015. And don’t forget to tune in for your San Jose Jazz Summer Fest Preview show on Friday August 7th at 5PM.

SONG TRAVELS WITH MICHAEL FEINSTEIN Monday at 9 pm 8/3

David Hyde Pierce

Emmy Award-winning TV actor, Tony Award-winning stage actor, singer and comedian, Pierce joins Feinstein to talk about everything from Beethoven to Monty Python. He performs a few of his favorite songs, including a duet of You’re the Top with Feinstein.

8/10 Marilyn Maye

Actress and vocalist Marilyn Maye is a lifelong performer with a career spanning nearly eight decades. On this edition of Song Travels, Maye joins host Feinstein for a medley of Big Time and Open a New Window.

8/17 Arturo O’Farrill

Grammy Award-winning bandleader, composer, and pianist Arturo O’Farrill is also the founder and artistic director of the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. Tune in as O’Farrill brings his own interpretation to “Not Now, Right Now” and performs his original tune “Siboney.”

Multi Grammy-Award winning vocalist Bobby McFerrin, best known for his 1988 hit Don’t Worry Be Happy, stops by the Song Travels’ studio to talk about his endless creativity and the enduring appeal of the Gershwins.

The songs of Nashville-based indie vocalist, pianist, and songwriter Roubion joins Feinstein to talk about her recordings, Fields and Forests, and she performs her original songs Vacherie Girl and Feel Better Sam.

Jazz icon Tootie Heath turned 80 on May 31st, and we help him celebrate the occasion! Popular opinion suggests that the drummer sounds better than ever, entering his eighth decade.

8/18 Ali Jackson Celebrates Max Roach

In a one-night-only salute to the father of modern drumming, JLCO member Ali Jackson illuminates Max Roach’s conceptual and artistic genius, featuring percussionist Victor Provost, vibraphonist Steve Nelson, pianist Emmet Cohen, bassist Russell Hall, tenor saxophonist Wayne Escoffery, and a string quartet with violinists Elio Bishop and Sara Caswell, violist Jeremy Kittel, and cellist Eugene Friesen.

8/25 Celebrating Betty Carter

Betty Carter was not only one of the most influential vocalists of the 20th century; she was a giver and a teacher to dozens of younger musicians. Hear stories from the many alumni of “the school of Betty Carter” and a special concert saluting her lasting legacy featuring Charenee Wade and many other past members of Carter’s band through the years.

Kenny Burrell

Guitarist Kenny Burrell has been called a “cool, controlled romantic” whose textured playing is “subtle yet sensual, meditative, exultant, wry, and intimate.” In fact, he was Duke Ellington’s favorite improviser on the guitar. Burrell delights on this 1993 Piano Jazz with a solo of ‘Round Midnight and joins McPartland for Don’t Worry ‘bout Me.

8/12 Bertha Hope

Bertha Hope’s contributions to mainstream and improvised musical idioms have made her one of the elite among her peers. In this Piano Jazz session from 1991, Hope performs In Search of Hope and McPartland joins for a duet of I’m Beginning to See the Light.

8/19 Arturo O’Farrill

Pianist, composer, and bandleader Arturo O’Farrill is a multiple Grammy winner, has contributed to contemporary Latin jazz as leader of the Chico O’Farrill Afro Cuban Jazz Orchestra and as the founder of the Afro Latin Jazz Alliance. On this 2002 Piano Jazz, O’Farrill performs Dandon Don Vasquez. He and McPartland expand on the Latin theme with a duet of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s Wave.

Pianist Hiromi Uehara was born in Shizuoka, Japan in 1979 and took her first piano lesson at age six. By age seventeen, she’d performed with both the Czech Philharmonic and with Chick Corea. On this episode of Piano Jazz from 2004, McPartland and Hiromi perform Lullaby of Birdland and McPartland improvises a Portrait of Hiromi.

Electro-Acoustic keyboard wizard Marc Cary at Cafe Stritch on March 7th, 2015, as part of the San Jose Jazz Winter Fest, with Rashaan Carter and Sameer Gupta. The San Jose Jazz Summer Fest starts tomorrow August 7th.

Vocalist Lisa Engelken’s new quintet recorded June 13th, 2015, at Musically Minded Academy in Oakland. With Frank Martin, Dan Neville, Sam Bevan and Matt Swindells.

The FivePlay Jazz Quintet featuring trumpeter Ron Horton, recorded April 18th, 2015, at the California Jazz Conservatory. With Laura Klein, Tony Corman, Dave Tidball, Paul Smith and Alan Hall.

8/27 Taylor Eigsti

Pianist and composer Taylor Eigsti’s trio featuring guest vocalist Gretchen Parlato, recorded at the 25th Annual Jazz At Filoli series, on Father’s Day June 21st, 2015, with drummer Kendrick Scott and bassist Zach Ostroff.
