JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm

12/3 Bob Brookmeyer Tribute Since the '50s, Bob Brookmeyer (pictured) has been one of the most original talents in jazz. Best known for his arresting solos on the unusual valve trombone, Brookmeyer became a major figure in the West Coast Jazz scene, especially after replacing trumpeter Chet Baker in Gerry Mulligan's pianoless quartet. He is equally gifted as a compelling composer-arranger and pianist. Interviewees include trumpeter Clark Terry, guitarist Jim Hall, composer Manny Albam and Maria Schneider, and saxophonist Joe Lovano.

12/10 Duke Ellington, The Overview Part 1 12/17 Duke Ellington, The Overview Part 2 Host Nancy Wilson picks up the Ellington (pictured) story in the early 1930s. As America struggled through the depths of the Depression, Ellington's star continued to rise. But his manager Irving Mills's move to book Ellington and his band on a tour of the racially-segregated Deep South brought Duke to a career crossroads. Commentary includes biographer John Edward Hasse, former Ellington bandmates, and Ellington himself.

12/25 Kim Burrell Gospel Jazz Vocalist Kim Burrell (pictured) fills The Allen Room with the sounds of holiday spirit. They offer soulful renditions of holiday classics including Silent Night, The Most Wonderful Time of the Year and Little drummer Boy. Join us for this musical feast.

12/6 Mulgrew Miller Trio at the KC Jazz Club 12/13 MacArthur Fellows at Newport: Miguel Zenon's Rayuela and the Dafnis Prieto Sextet 12/20 Happy New Year! with Wynton Marsalis at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola The audience is so happy, they swarm the stage on New Year's Eve 2011. Wynton and his men (pictured) put early New Orleans jazz—Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong—front and center with a few brief and beautiful stories about the birth of jazz.

12/27 Dave Brubeck (1920-2012) at the 2009 Newport Jazz Festival

Coming up on his 89th birthday, host Dee Dee Bridgewater poses the rhetorical question, "Who in jazz today traveled and worked more than Dave Brubeck?"(pictured) In the late summer of 2009 alone, he played the Newport, Detroit and Monterey Jazz Festivals. From Newport he opens with a medley by his mentor Duke Ellington, moves on to Stormy Weather (it was a beautiful day) and On the Sunny Side of the Street, and features his men Bobby Militello on sax and flute, bassist Michael Moore, and drummer Randy Jones on Take Five. Reprising this show, we celebrate this singular artist and his last, long-running group, and say farewell.
