Celebrate the return of the sun and the warming of the heart with Paul Winter's All New 34th Winter Solstice Celebration. On the darkest night of the year, we head back to New York's Cathedral of St. John the Divine to hear The Paul Winter Consort and the glorious Cathedral Pipe Organ. The performance brings traditional holiday favorites and new sounds from around the world with special guests Ivan Lins and Renato Braz. Hosted by John Schaefer.

Join us for a very special holiday concert with Howard University's premiere vocal ensemble Afro Blue, and special guest pianist Cyrus Chestnut. The a-cappela group performs a variety of holiday songs including African-American spirituals, jazz and pop tunes, and classical repertoire. The joyous celebration includes one of a kind arrangements on traditional holiday songs plus new compositions... music perfect for the holidays and the spirit of Christmas. Hosted by Michele Norris.
7am: Festivo Alt.Latino with Coral Contigas NPR Music's Alt.Latino presents the 3rd edition of Festivo Alt.Latino -- a special holiday concert featuring the 20 piece choral ensemble Choral Cantigas. This musical performance also includes stories about holiday traditions and cultures. Hear a traditional Peruvian Christmas carol, folk music from Brazil, Spain, and Mexico plus Parrandas from Venezuela and Puerto Rico. The many rich styles of Latino choral music will unite listeners through the joyful and transformative power of music. Hosted by Felix Contreras.
8am: Jazz Piano Christmas XXX NPR Music brings you another great concert from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Pianists Cyrus Chestnut, Kris Davis, Lynne Arriale and The "Master" Harold Maybern take the stage to perform their favorite holiday songs. Hosted by Felix Contreras
9am–Noon: A Herb Wong Xmas: The Swinging Joys of Yuletide Jazz This Winter Holiday bring us all together with joyous music. For the past 5 decades, we celebrated with Dr. Herb Wong's Swinging Christmas Day show. Herb fell ill this year, but that didn’t stop him from fulfilling his dream...completing his 50th Anniversary show! He recorded it in February and passed just a few months later. It's a wonderful and fitting tribute to a man who gave us so many years of fabulous music here in the Bay Area. Hear Herb's favorites from the Kenton Band, Diana Krall, Fats Waller, Herbie Hancock, Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Ellington and all the greats.

Tony-nominated actress, vocalist, and songwriter Ann Hampton Callaway has penned tunes for Barbara Streisand and wrote and sang the theme to the hit sitcom The Nanny. This week she performs a set of standards, including Our Love is Here to Stay.

British jazz vocalist and pianist Anthony Strong built a reputation as a session pianist, supporting stars like B.B. King. On this Song Travels, Strong performs old favorites along with a few modern standards.

Grammy-winning opera star and actress Renée Fleming has performed some of the greatest operatic roles ever written at the world’s leading concert halls. She shares a few of her favorite selections, including songs by Franz Schubert, Gershwin, and Leonard Cohen.

Jazz vocalist Gregory Porter had a breakout year in 2012. His album Be Good topped many “Best of” lists and was named iTunes Jazz Album of the Year. Porter performs his original Water, and recalls Nat King Cole with Nature Boy.

Pianist/composer Liz Story is a fascinating, ever-changing musician. Her music has been compared to Copeland, Chopin, Debussy, Keith Jarrett, and Chick Corea. In this 1993 Piano Jazz session, Story plays My Foolish Heart, then she and McPartland get together for All the Things You Are.
12/10 Mel Tormé
Described by Rex Reed as “America’s greatest male singer,” Mel Tormé (9/13/25 – 6/5/99) was one of the most versatile performers of his day. Tormé shares how his classic The Christmas Song inspired him to put out his own holiday album.
12/17 George Shearing
British jazz pianist George Shearing (8/13/19 – 2/14/11) was a friend and frequent guest of Marian’s on Piano Jazz. On this special edition from 2001, the two reminisce about seasons gone by and perform both traditional and contemporary holiday tunes, including Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, Away in a Manger, and Rudolf the Red-Nosed Reindeer.
12/24 Michel Petrucciani
Michel Petrucciani (12/28/62 – 1/6/99) was one of the greatest French jazz pianists of all time. Born with a genetic disease, he only stood at three feet, but with hands unaffected by his disease, Petrucciani had an extraordinary talent at the keys. From this 1987 broadcast, Petrucciani plays his own composition, The Prayer, then he and McPartland combine their talents on John Coltrane’s Giant Steps.
