Inside On Air
On The Cover February 2010 February is Black History Month, and we take this opportunity to look back at the civil rights struggle in our country. Before the tragedy at Kent State, there was another student/police clash on the South Carolina State Campus that shocked the nation, Scarred Justice: The Orangeburg Massacre 1968 (12/4 at 10:00 pm) tell this compelling story. Right here in San Francisco, longshoremen fought for their rights in the midst of the Great Depression in Bloody Thursday (Sunday 12/10 at 9:00 pm), and before Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on an Alabama bus, Sarah Mae Fleming challenged this law in Before Rosa: The Unsung Contribution of Sarah Mae Fleming (Sunday 12/7 at 10:30 pm.) We take a look at the 'Massive Resistance' against the laws in Virginia enacted after the landmark Brown vs. The Board of Education Supreme Court decision (Thursday, 2/18 at 10:00 pm) and those who fought against slavery in Whispers of Angels: A Story of the Underground Railroad (Sunday, 2/28 at 8:00 pm.)

Dear KCSM Members, During the month of February, our programming highlights the struggles and victories of the civil rights movement in America. Many of us are old enough to remember the turbulent times of the sixties and seventies when African Americans led the way for many groups of disenfranchised Americans in the fight for equal rights and opportunities. As a student at Berkeley during the seventies, I was no stranger to the politics of the times and participated in demonstrations for equality and social justice. What I didn't appreciate back then was the outstanding quality of the California public school education that I took for granted. California used to lead the nation with our excellent public school system - if you got the grades, you were assured an affordable quality public education at a state college or university. The situation has changed dramatically over the years, and once again students are taking to the streets to protest. This time the protests are about keeping higher education affordable and accessible. Community colleges, once mandated by the state to provide access to everyone are now having to cap enrollment. Other state institutions are raising tuition to levels that make going to college prohibitively expensive. And who is being most impacted by the paring down of the state school system? Minorities, students who are the first in their family to go to college, and working people who are retraining for a new profession - disenfranchised Americans who are seeking equal opportunities through education. KCSM offers telecourses and training programs that reach thousands of students each year. Our Broadcast Arts department is the only teaching facility in Northern California that trains students at a full-power tv station. So in March, when community college students from every part of the state converge to march on Sacramento to protest the cuts, I and many of my KCSM co-workers will march again - to make sure that equal opportunity through education remains possible for all Californians. Sincerely,
Sinclair Crockett Business and Fundraising Manager

Bloody Thursday Set in 1934 in the midst of the Great Depression, longshoremen were fighting for their rights at the same time that most of their familes weren't sure where their next meal would come from, and the odds were stacked against them. Mainstream newspaper publishers, fearful of unionization at their own papers lauched brutal attacks against the dockworkers, along with politians and the police who openly used their resources to side with shipping companies.
