JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 2/4

Hoagy Carmichael: 'Stardust Melodies'

Bandleader, arranger, and pianist Fletcher Henderson (pictured) is one of the most influential yet least known masters in jazz. During his orchestra's peak years in the '20s and '30s, he helped define the sound of big band jazz, pioneering musical devices such as the call and response between the brass and reeds. His bands featured a brilliant array of musicians including Louis Armstrong, saxophonist Coleman Hawkins, Benny Carter, and many others.

2/11 Paul Desmond: 'The Sound of a Dry Martini' 2/18 Gerry Mulligan: Intricacy in a Lower Register Saxophonist, composer, and arranger Gerry Mulligan, was a principal figure in the cool jazz movement of the '50s. He composed for and performed on the legendary "Birth of the Cool" sessions with Miles Davis. Arguably the most influential baritone saxophonist in jazz, Gerry Mulligan was also a commanding composer, arranger and bandleader, and played a pivotal role in developing the "cool jazz" sound and the West Coast jazz community. Mulligan extended his unwieldy instrument's vocabulary with his soft tone, rhythmic agility and harmonic brilliance, and established the "bari" sax as a solo instrument in small group settings

*2/25 Pianist Ahmad Jamal

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm *2/5

Monty Alexander: Harlem-Kingston Express The West Indies meet West Harlem when Jamaican-born pianist Monty Alexander and the Harlem-Kingston Express make a stop at the House of Swing. Alexander (bandmate of Dizzy Gillespie, Ray Brown and Sonny Rollins) brings his disparate worlds and singular voice together to explore the ‘New Calypso bebop’ called “mento”. He’s joined by drummer Herlin Riley and bassist Hassan Shukar.

*2/12 Wynton Marsalis Quintet 2/19 Nuevo Tango: The Music of Astor Piazzolla and Pablo Aslan Tango and jazz have a natural affinity for one another – both are New World music reshaped by folkloric sensibilities. They found each other under Argentinean composer Astor Piazzolla and the pairing continues today with bassist Pablo Aslan. Explore the sounds of modern tango with Aslan, bandoneon giant Nestor Marconi and Paquito D’Rivera.

Bill Frisell

*2/13 Randy Weston

Guitarist Bill Frisell has been on the cutting edge of jazz guitar since his arrival on the scene in the early 1980s. With amazing technique and voracious creativity, he incorporates the whole of American music -from country to the avant garde -into his unique work. Frisell performs a sweet solo version of the Hank Williams classic, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry,” before joining McPartland for “Blue Monk.”

*2/20 George Duke 2/27 Dee Dee Bridgewater Celebrated singer and stage actress Dee Dee Bridgewater began her career as the lead vocalist of a jazz band. Bridgewater honed her vocal talents and headed to Broadway, where her performance in The Wiz was honored with a Tony award. And she was a natural to take over as host of NPR’s Jazzset. Switching from host to McPartland’s distinguished guest, Bridgewater.

JAZZSET WITH DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER Thursday at 9 pm *2/7

Lionel Loueke Trio at the KC Jazz Club

*2/14 Jason Moran’s Live: Time at the KC Jazz Club

Jason Moran begins his tenure as Artistic Advisor for Jazz at the Kennedy Center with Live: Time, inspired by the quilts and quilters of Gee’s Bend, Alabama. Moran composed the music, and Alicia Hall Moran sings the text, “Cold Water for Blood Stains” by Asali Solomon. Bill Frisell sets aside his guitar momentarily and reads a moving letter that he wrote to Moran after visiting Gee’s Bend, and the musicians in the trio improvise on the patterns and colors in the quilts. Live: Time was originally commissioned by the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

2/21 Bill Frisell Is Everywhere at the Newport Jazz Festival 2/28 Alexis Cuadrado: A Lorca Soundscape at 92YTribeca

As soon as composer Cuadrado of Barcelona earned his Master’s in Jazz Performance at Queens College and settled in Brooklyn, the stock market plummeted. Cuadrado remembered that 80 years earlier, in 1929, poet Federico García Lorca of Granada was visiting New York when the stock market crashed. Lorca wrote verse about it, collected in Poeta en Nueva York (A Poet in New York). Now Cuadrado has set Lorca’s poetry to music, performed by Claudia Acuña, voice; Miguel Zenón, saxophone; Dan Tepfer, piano; the composer on bass; Mark Ferber, drums.
