P ledge D rive V olunteers !

Whether sunny or raining, pledge drive after pledge drive, our volunteers answer the call (literally and figuratively) to help us when we need them most. They give us the much needed help "in the back room" answering phones, folding letters, stuffing envelopes or helping during festivals. We rely on them to "get us through" so we can do what we do best ... bring you great jazz! We can never truly express how grateful we are for their loyalty and support.

Jazz 91 Preview

have you heard with Patrick wolff Monday at 9 pm

2/1 Calvin Keys

A Bay Area treasure, Calvin Keys is a world class jazz guitarist who has been taking swing to new levels for over four decades. We’ll listen to his wonderful albums as a leader as well as his work as a sideman with masters like Ahmad Jamal.

2/8 Geri Allen

Allen is a noted pianist and composer from Detroit. Her rich harmonic language and unique touch on the piano have allowed her to create music that strides across different genres of jazz while still being cohesive and accessible.

2/15 Sunny Murray

Sunny Murray did (and continues to do) for the drums what Paul Bley did for the piano and Ornette Coleman did for horns, played with a unique kind of virtuosity that opened up new realms of sound. The collaborations and albums he led in the 60’s are cornerstones of free jazz, and he continues to make music that embodies his humor, creativity, and pugnacity.

2/22 John Carter

An unsung hero of jazz clarinet and one of the most important figures of creative music in Los Angeles, Carter took the innovations of free music and used them to expand the possibilities of his instrument, and his playing sounds as fresh now as it did then.

2/29 Jackie McLean, Composer

While most jazz fans know McLean for his influence as an alto saxophonist, his abilities as a composer are often overlooked. McLean presented a great body of songs that anchored powerful melodies to an effortless blend of modal playing, free jazz, bebop, and the blues.

JAZZ Night in America with christian mcbride Tuesday at 9 pm

2/2 DC Jazz Loft Trios

Highlights from Capital Bop’s 2015 DC Jazz Fest program featuring three path-breaking jazz trios led by Warren Wolf, Kris Funn, and Gary Thomas.

2/9 Christian McBride’s The Movement Revisited

Christian McBride’s The Movement Revisited, inspired by the words of Rosa Parks, Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali and Martin Luther King, Jr., from the Kimmel Center in downtown Philly.

2/16 ELEW

Pianist Eric Lewis has a led a music career in and out of the traditional jazz cannon often under his stage name ELEW. Lewis has been performing solo piano “Rockjazz” for the past 6 years. In this episode of Jazz Night in America, Lewis “returns” to Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola with a burning trio featuring Reginald Veal on bass and Jeff “Tain” Watts on drums.

2/23 Up And Down The Mississippi With Bill Frisell

In this episode of Jazz Night in America, versatile guitarist Frisell embarks on a musical journey along the revered Route 61. The story of the music that came out of the Mississippi Delta and traveled up the river to Memphis, St. Louis, Chicago, and the music the Mississippi inspired in the rest of the country is the story of at least the last century of American music.

One of the rare jazz discoveries of her generation, Eden Atwood has a voice that has been described as beautiful and refreshing. Eden studied piano as a child and went on to have a performing career in New York and beyond. On this Piano Jazz from 1996, Atwood and McPartland duet on Old Devil Moon.

2/10 Jon Batiste

Pianist, bandleader and the leader of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert house band Stay Human, Batiste has collaborated with Harry Connick Jr., Allen Toussaint, Cassandra Wilson, and the Marsalis family. On this Piano Jazz from 2011, guest hosted by Jon Weber, Batiste sings What a Wonderful World and joins Weber for a duet of Take Me Out to the Ball Game.

2/17 Phil Woods

Saxophonist Phil Woods (1931 – 2015) was a true master of bebop, whether weaving jazz improvisations or playing feisty crackling licks on cool solos, his playing was always compelling. We remember Woods with this 2003 Piano Jazz, where his imaginative and sultry sound blends with his trio and McPartland on How About You and Fine and Dandy.

2/24 Sumi Tonooka

Pianist Sumi Tonooka is an incisive musician of great originality and imagination. On her visit to Piano Jazz in 1992, Tonooka swings with an easy grace while playing a great rendition of Somewhere Over the Rainbow. Tonooka and McPartland join up to show what jazz is all about on Solar.
