Dear KCSM Members, This new year finds KCSM-FM preparing for a fundraising drive, and preparing for some construction on campus just outside our doors. For those of you that have been here, you will be happy to hear that the college is doing a makeover in the restrooms of our building. We apologize in advance for any construction noise that gets captured by the mic’s, but the refreshed restrooms will be worth it!

KCSM-TV is struggling with its financial situation, due to the state budget cuts. We continue to look for opportunities to bring you excellent educational programming, and to look for revenue opportunities that don’t impact our programming or sense of community. You will notice a few changes in programming and look of the station. We have moved to a simple look that hopefully reflects our "back to basics" educational roots. We have added a craft block in the weekday afternoon as well as weekend mornings and Sunday afternoon. We also offer exercise programs for all different levels every morning of the week. You will find greater consistency in all parts of our schedule, with changing only for fundraising programs and during the weekday mornings as the college courses change. We hope you appreciate the consistency. As always, we want to hear from you. Send me an email and let me know how are we doing? What do you want to see on KCSM? Sincerely,

Marilyn Lawrence General Manager

Paul McCartney In Red Square For decades, the seminal rock music of the Beatles was banned by the Soviet government—decried as the epitome of Western decadence and propaganda. Yet their groundbreaking music could not be completely stifled by the repressive regime, and generations of Russians found ways to take part in the cultural phenomenon. The barriers came down for good in 2003 when Paul McCartney, during his first visit to Russia, performed in Moscow's Red Square. Friday, January 22 at 8:30 pm

Baby It’s Cold Outside… But We’re Keepin’ It Hot at Jazz 91 By Claire Greene Pledge Drive Producer

The winter winds may be swirling outside and the raindrops following suit (we hope) but we’ve got a whole other climate happening here at Jazz 91. Yes, KCSM Music Director Chuy Varela is forecasting a high-pressure system of hot Latin music that’s guaranteed to keep the sun shining and the palm trees swayin’ to the salsa beat. You’ll definitely want to dance on over to your phone or computer to contribute during our upcoming Winter Membership Drive and make it a rousing success! pictured: jesse "chuy" varela, music director photo credit: art lazanoff

In addition to the Latin beats, we’ll get wild and wooly with Willie and Wynton. Yeah, those two cats seem to be getting’ along real well. After the success of their 2008 Blue Note CD, Two Men With The Blues, they decided to get together again and record a live concert at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Rose Theatre called Willie Nelson and Wynton Marsalis Play the Music of Ray Charles. You’ll have an opportunity to get this concert film on DVD featuring special guest Norah Jones and behindthe-scenes interviews and interaction among the artists. Speaking of DVD’s, we’ve got our hands on another great bunch from the Jazz Icons series: Jimmy Smith, Coleman Hawkins, Art Farmer, Erroll Garner, Woody Herman, Art Blakey and Anita O’Day. If you haven’t put one of these in your collection, seriously consider doing so. They’re great timepieces and wonderful to watch. Another great DVD in the offering is part of the Dave Brubeck Time Out 50th Anniversary Legacy Edition. This 3-disc set features the original album plus a CD of 8 previously unreleased live performances from the ’61, ’63, and ’64 Newport Jazz Festivals plus a DVD on the making of Time Out, performance footage, interviews and more. So, don’t touch that dial! Leave it tuned to 91.1FM, KCSM. Join in the fun of the Winter Membership Drive, beginning Tuesday, January 19th, and help us continue celebrating jazz each and every day!

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 1/4

Bessie Smith No blues singer can escape the influence of Bessie Smith, (pictured) "The Empress of the Blues". For over 100 years, this legendary, singer has been and continues to be a major influence on singers and instrumentalists of today. She was larger than life, inexhaustibly creative, and undeniably distinctive. Her legacies of songs speak to everybody; she gave the music its raw, regal poignancy—and marketability.

1/11 Gil Evans His most famous work was with Miles Davis in the mid-'50s with the celebrated albums Miles Ahead, Porgy and Bess, and Sketches of Spain. But there's much more to Gil Evans' (pictured) story. In a career spanning more than fifty years— from the early '30s until his death—the legendary "arranger's arranger" created his music using a diverse palette of musical colors, both within jazz and beyond. Evans' music reflects an insatiable appetite for new sounds. Yet every arrangement bears his unique signature and one of the most distinctive orchestral writing styles in jazz. Featured interviews include: Gerry Mulligan, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Steve Lacy, David Sanborn, Gunther Schuller, Gary Giddins, and Sting.

1/12 Luciana Souza Trio Brazilian vocalist Luciana Souza (pictured) has made a home in both the Bossa Nova and Jazz traditions—and even within the works of EE Cummings and Pablo Neruda. Her acrobatic inflections are punctuated by percussionist Cyro Baptista and guitarist Romero Lubambo.

For those of you who read the Jazz 91 blog, you are familiar with our dilemma of offering CD's or downloads as pledge drive thank you gifts. Simply put, jazz CD's are getting harder and harder to find, and once found, harder to obtain. We received many responses to the post (thank you!), and with a few exceptions, the response was overwhelmingly positive about downloading music as the way of the future.

However, as we have begun the process of trying to clear the rights for a compilation of announcers' favorite for the upcoming drive, we have run into difficulty getting releases on a lot of the music. We feel as if we are in limbo... we have all this really great music, but no way to legally share it outside of our normal broadcast. We want to hear from you, our members, listeners, musicians, other radio stations and folks in the business as to whether there are any fair and creative ways that they've discovered to clear rights. Please email me at sinclair@kcsm.net with your thoughts.
