Jim Cullum’s Jazz Cabaret — Live at Pearl Stable

Classic American jazz is a gold mine of great music. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and their guests dig up some personal favorites and flex their creative muscle on tunes never before performed on Riverwalk Jazz. It’s “the best of what you’ve never heard” in a rollicking concert performance.

1/12 Lester Leaps In: The President of Tenor Sax The Jim Cullum Jazz Band — along with Harry “Sweets” Edison, Topsy Chapman and more — perform tunes made famous by the President of Tenor Sax: Lester Young (pictured). And Vernel Bagneris adds accounts of this remarkable player whose career took him from the tent show circuit to stardom on the bandstands of Kansas City.

JAZZSET WITH DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER Monday at 9 pm 1/6

Ryan Truesdell and the Gil Evans Project at Newport

1/13 Edmar Casteñeda and Friends at Americas Society in New York The “hippest harpist” and his trio play a repertoire from Colombia, Argentina and Venezuela with guests: vocalist Andrea Tierra, bandoneonist Héctor Del Curto, vibraphonist Joe Locke, and cuatro legend Jorge Glem. Americas Society’s presentation of the Edmar Castañeda (pictured) Trio and Friends on JazzSet is supported by Presenting Jazz, a program of Chamber Music America funded through the generosity of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

1/20 Abbey Lincoln’s Songs Always a vocalist, Lincoln (1930-2010) acted in movies, fought for Civil Rights, and – in her long, productive last chapter – wrote and recorded personal songs about life. New meanings begin to emerge as Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves and Cassandra Wilson sing Abbey. Musical Director Terri Lyne Carrington.

1/27 Patrick Cornelius: While We Were Very Young at Berklee College of Music

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm 1/7

Re-Imagined: The Music Of Herbie Hancock

1/14 Nuevo Tango: The Music of Astor Piazzolla with Pablo Aslan and Paquito D’Rivera Astor Piazzolla’s impact on tango heralded a stunning new incarnation of the art form: Nuevo Tango. His native Argentina – and the rest of the world – was never the same. Pablo Aslan and Paquito D’Rivera are no lightweights either, and they present an hour of hot Latin tango.

1/21 Bird With Strings 1/28 Catherine Russell / Nancy Wilson

Two vocalists defy category – Catherine Russell (pictured), who nurtured a career as a backup singer with Al Green, Michael Feinstein and David Bowie, and has cultivated her own strong solo voice. Nancy Wilson, the perennial song stylist whose five-decade career started with Cannonball Adderley, seamlessly crosses the jazz-blues-pop divide.

Marian McPartland with guest host Elvis Costello - Part One

The tables are turned as McPartland sits at the guest bench to discuss her life as a performer and as host of Piano Jazz. Elvis Costello takes the role of host as McPartland reminisces about moments from the program’s early days— such as her interviews with debut guest, Mary Lou Williams, and with Bill Evans, who gave McPartland a detailed lesson in the structure of his playing on air. Costello sings and McPartland plays Our Love Is Here to Stay and Dancing on the Ceiling.

1/15 The Hickory House Trio

In the 1950s, New York’s 52nd Street was a jazz mecca. The Hickory House was known for its sizzling steaks and a swinging jazz trio led by a young female pianist with a British accent and a God-given touch. Marian McPartland, bassist Bill Crow, and her drummer, the late Joe Morello, held court at the Hickory House for almost ten years. The trio reunited in 1990 for this special Piano Jazz, including performances of Skylark and I’m Beginning to See the Light.
