SONG TRAVELS WITH MICHAEL FEINSTEIN Monday at 9 pm 1/5

Matt Munisteri

Guitarist, vocalist, and composer Matt Munisteri has uncovered much of the forgotten jazz and swing from the early 20th century. His album Still Runnin’ Round in the Wilderness explores the “lost” compositions of the American singer/songwriter Willard Robison.

1/12 Bette Midler

An hour of pure radio fun with vocalist, actress, and comedian Bette Midler who unpacks stories and favorite songs from her record collection—from vintage Hawaiian music to Louis Jordan and Destiny’s Child. Feinstein presents Midler with a performance of I’ll Be There, written for her by the legendary songwriting team Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

1/19 Melissa Manchester

Grammy award-winning vocalist and songwriter Melissa Manchester performed with Bette Midler as “Toots in the Middle” in the original group The Harlettes. She co-wrote and produced a number of hits throughout the ’70s and ’80s, and her songs have been recorded by artists such as Barbara Streisand, Alison Krause, and Johnny Mathis.

1/26 Marilyn McCoo & Billy Davis, Jr.

The husband and wife team of Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis, Jr. met as members of the iconic ’60s group The Fifth Dimension. They went on to perform as a successful duo and to host their own television show. More than forty years later, their music and mutual love and respect are still going strong. Performances include Mona Lisa and Here’s That Rainy Day.

JAZZ Night in America with christian mcbride Tuesday at 9 pm 1/6

Live from Detroit!

Regina Carter and Rodney Whitaker take special delight performing in their hometown of Detroit, Michigan. Jazz Night in America features their sets and explores the Motor City jazzscene through their eyes and ears.

1/13 Dave Brubeck

Dave Brubeck’s music is reimagined by members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. Jazz Night in America explores various Brubeck compositions, as we sit down and discuss with the arrangers the decisions they made when approaching the material.

1/20 Prestige Turns 65

Two years ago Jamison Ross took first place in the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition. The 26-year-old drummer has played with both veterans Carmen Lundy and Wess Anderson, and young talents like Jon Batiste and Cécile McLorin Salvant. Ross’ roots in jazz and gospel give him unfailing feel, and thrill-inducing chops. His trio celebrates Prestige Records’ 65th anniversary, live at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

1/7

Paul Shaffer

Longtime bandleader for NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman, Shaffer’s early training was in the classics. But thanks to rock-n-roll, he grew up to lead what Letterman has called “the world’s most dangerous band.” Also a composer, performer, and director, the versatile Shaffer is indeed a force to be reckoned with. On this 1988 Piano Jazz, he plays the standard All the Things You Are and Stevie Wonder’s Isn’t She Lovely with McPartland.

1/14 Cyrus Chestnut

Cyrus Chestnut is a conservatory-trained pianist who is firmly grounded in jazz history, all the way back to Jelly Roll Morton. He’s also played with many of today’s best interpreters— Wynton Marsalis, Jon Hendricks, Christian McBride, Terence Blanchard, and Betty Carter, to name a few. This 2003 Piano Jazz is a swinging hour of jazz bursting with spirit.

1/21 Gary Burton

Five-time Grammy Award-winner Gary Burton has backed jazz greats, including George Shearing and Stan Getz. He formed his own quartet, combining jazz, rock, and other influences into what would become Fusion. On this Piano Jazz from 2005, Burton and McPartland perform tunes by Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ellington, Rodgers & Hart, and more.

1/28 Danilo Perez

Panamanian pianist Perez worked with Dizzy Gillespie and his United Nations Orchestra, where he absorbed bebop and prebop styles. But Dizzy also impressed upon him the importance of getting to the roots of his own heritage, and Perez began creating music that seeks connection and defies boundaries.
