Ah, the voice! The first instrument. The vehicle through which all others developed. Where would we be without it? Fortunately, we don’t have to answer that question, since we have so many extraordinary jazz vocalists in our history and our midst. Join us this month as we Sing A Song of Jazz and celebrate some of the greats! Ella Fitzgerald; Tony Bennett; Etta James; Ray Charles; Billie Holiday; Lambert, Henricks & Ross; Ruth Brown; Sam Cooke; Allen Toussaint. The fun begins on Wednesday, January 20th. Log onto www.kcsm.org for more information.

The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of "The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

have you heard with Patrick wolff Monday at 9 pm 1/4

Ron Miles

Trumpet player and composer Ron Miles has one of the most distinctive voices in the world of modern jazz brass, emotionally expressive without being sentimental and has a string of recordings as a leader which show an equally eclectic and sensitive musical identity.

1/11 Ralph Lalama

A legend in the New York jazz world, tenor saxophonist Lalama has been a featured member in a number of notable big bands. On his own, he blasts through a gruff and swinging approach to hard bop that speaks the language of jazz without resting in cliché.

1/18 Abdullah Ibrahim

One of the most prominent African jazz musicians, pianist Ibrahim (previously named Dollar Brand) was mentored by Duke Ellington, and fused the approach of Duke and Monk with the sensibilities of free jazz and South African choral and gospel music. In his fifth decade of music-making, he continues to make music that is challenging and spiritually vibrant.

1/25 Barbara Donald

One of the most commanding of the avant-garde trumpeters, Barbara Donald came to prominence in the 1960’s, when her fiery solos and powerful sound combined with her thenhusband Sonny Simmons to produce some pivotal records. Her voice and contribution is one that deserves far greater recognition.

JAZZ Night in America with christian mcbride Tuesday at 9 pm 1/5

Tootie Heath Turns 80! - Live at Jazz at Lincoln Center

A celebration of the 80th birthday of drummer, bandleader, and force of nature Tootie Heath. He’s recorded with John Coltrane, lead a band for fifty years, and played with Dexter Gordon, Nina Simone, Wes Montgomery, and many more.

1/12 The Father of Stride

Today’s finest pianists pay tribute to the Father of Stride Piano — James P. Johnson. We’ll dig into the James P. Collection in Newark, New Jersey and then head to Dizzy’s for some solo piano from Aaron Diehl, Ethan Iverson, Marc Cary, ELEW and many others at Jazz at Lincoln Center.

1/19 Christian McBride’s “The Movement Revisited”

Jazz Night in America turns the tables on host Christian McBride and features a recent performance in Philadelphia of his large-scale composition for jazz orchestra, gospel choir, and live oration of speeches from the Civil Rights Movement.

1/26 Here’s Johnny!

Mezzrow is New York City’s newest listening room: an intimate club for solo and duo performers where silence and attention are more than encouraged. It’s a bit of a throwback, as is its Monday night host Johnny O’Neal. A virtuoso who shot onto the scene in the 1980s, the pianist is now re-establishing his presence in New York, holding court at Mezzrow, singing the blues and welcoming guest after guest onto the tiny stage.

Max Roach

Being a legendary drummer was only part of Max Roach’s musical personality; he was also an accomplished composer and storyteller. On this 1998 Piano Jazz, Roach (1924 – 2007) relates a few of his many musical memories and, along with McPartland and bassist Ray Drummond treat listeners to I’ll Remember Clifford and Joy Spring.

1/13 Jane Ira Bloom

A supreme soprano sax player, Jane Ira Bloom is known for her innovative use of movement and her high-energy compositions. On this 1993 Piano Jazz, Bloom and McPartland combine forces to freely improvise and to play My Romance.

1/20 Bobby Enriquez

A florid, flamboyant pianist, Bobby Enriquez (1943–1996) was called “the Wild Man of Jazz,” a reference to his karate-like attack with fists, elbows, and palms hitting the keyboard. Although he never received formal lessons, he clearly made his mark among jazz heavyweights. On this 1990 Piano Jazz, Enriquez plays a fiery rendition of Just One of Those Things, then teams up with McPartland for his own Bumble Rumble Blues.

1/27 Sergio Salvatore

Sergio Salvatore was only 14-years-old when he was McPartland’s guest 20 years ago, but he was already making the jazz world sit up and take notice. This young composer, pianist, and improviser is a natural. On this 1996 edition of Piano Jazz, he solos on his own Revolving Door. He and McPartland get together for Autumn Leaves.
