1/9

Stephen Riley

Stephen Riley's playing is both historical and innovative-with a husky, nuanced sound, and a slithering, weaving way of playing lines, he has found a hip and new identity in the tradition of players like Paul Gonsalves and Lucky Thompson.

Albert Dailey

A promising star of jazz piano in the 60s and 70s, Dailey brought a rich and complex postbop sound to the bands of Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon & Art Blakey. His early death in the 80s cut short a great career, and most of his music remains outrageously out of print today.

1/16 Charlie Haden’s Liberation Music Orchestra

One of the more challenging and rewarding projects of the great bassist Charlie Haden, this large ensemble played music that celebrated the power of protest against political injustice and explored the musical bonds that can hold improvisers together through chaos.

1/23 Barry Harris

A master of jazz piano Barry Harris is one of the last remaining giants of the 50s. His delicate touch and deep understanding of bebop harmony elevated many bands and his indefatigable work as a teacher has inspired new generations to keep the flames burning.

1/30 John Tchicai

Alto saxophonist Tchicai brought intelligence and warmth to the free jazz movement of the 60s through his work with the New York Art Quartet. Tchicai kept a constantly shifting and evolving presence on the scene, touring worldwide until his death in 2012.

JAZZ Night in America with christian mcbride Tuesday at 9 pm 1/3

Jazz Night in Panama

Pianist/educator and Panama’s official Cultural Ambassador Danilo Perez is working hard to underscore the Jazz and Panama connection, and the Panama Jazz Festival is the grand vehicle behind his mission to introduce underserved kids to music.

1/10 50 Years Of Monday Nights At The Vanguard

The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra, now the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, still plays every Monday night at the famed club. We visit the basement jazz shrine for the band’s 50th anniversary show and learn the story of how the band came to be.

1/17 Remembering Dave Brubeck

Brubeck’s music is reimagined by members of the JALC Orchestra who explore his various compositions and discuss the decisions they made when approaching the material.

1/24 Samora Pinderhuges’ The Transformations Suite

A showcase of Bay Area-native, pianist/composer, Samora Pinderhuges’ “Transformations Suite”, which challenges the status quo and combines theater, music and poetry to examine and explore the history of African diasporic protest, work and protest movements.

1/31 Marilyn May, Cabaret

88-year old singer/actress/living legend Marilyn May shared the stage with artists like Count Basie and Charlie Parker. Now, for the first time, May performs at JALC’s most intimate venue — Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola.

Toots Thielemans

In this 2005 Piano Jazz, we remember Jazz Legend Jean-Baptiste “Toots” Thielemans (1922 – 2016), unrivaled master of the jazz harmonica. He exchanges stories with McPartland and joins her for Giant Steps and Georgia.

1/11 Jeannie Cheatham

Pianist/vocalist Jeannie Cheatham began piano lessons at the tender age of five and at 13 became intoxicated with the sounds of jazz. On this 1989 Piano Jazz, Cheatham performs Midnight Mam. McPartland and Cheatham join forces for a swinging duet on Perdido.

1/18 Lalo Schifrin

Composer/arranger/pianist Lalo Schifrin trained classically as a young man in Argentina. He went on to study at the Paris Conservatory as he developed a career as a jazz musician, playing and recording in Europe. On this 1997 Piano Jazz, Schifrin treats listeners to a solo version of his composition Down Here on the Ground from the hit movie Cool Hand Luke.

1/25 Kendra Shank

From a background in visual arts and French literature at the University of Washington, Kendra Shank has been pursuing a successful singing career from Seattle to Paris to New York, where she is currently based. Shank’s sensuous phrasing and crystal clear tone have earned praise from critics and fans alike. On this Piano Jazz from 2007, Shank’s thoughtful yet emotional voice illuminates Jerome Kern’s Long Ago and Far Away. Shank also shows off her skill on the guitar, as she joins McPartland for In the Days of Our Love.
