The District and its Colleges are governed by six-member Board of Trustees, five elected at large for four-year terms by the County voters and one elected by students in the District for a one-year term: Helen Hausman, Richard Holober (President), Dave Mandelkern, Patricia Miljanich (Vice President—Clerk), Karen Schwartz, Virginia Medrano Rosales (Student Trustee, 2008-09), Ron Galatolo (District Chancellor), Michael E. Dear KCSM Members, With our next fiscal year beginning on July 1, KCSM is facing huge financial challenges due to a significant reduction in revenue. In this tough economic time we are experiencing declining funding in corporate underwriting, federal grants support, and member contributions. Our license holder, San Mateo County Community College District, which has always been extremely supportive of KCSM TV and FM, is facing a substantial budgetary emergency as well. As a direct result of the California budget crisis, funding for community colleges statewide has been drastically cut. Each of the colleges in our district has had to make painful reductions of expenses, staffing and classes offered. The financial support KCSM receives from the district will have to be cut as well. KCSM FM will continue to bring you the best in straight-ahead jazz, 24/7 but we will be making some internal changes that will help boost our productivity without increasing our cost structure. In effect we will be doing more with less to continue to bring you the jazz you love.

KCSM TV however, will undergo some very visible changes. KCSM has completed our transition to digital television, and the facility infrastructure is now in place. The increase in efficiency will allow the station to be operated by less staff. In the past, KCSM has purchased 25% of PBS primetime programs, and used other public television sources to fill in the rest of our schedule. Beginning July 1st, KCSM will no longer purchase PBS primetime programs. This will save the station more than $300,000 annually. The majority of your favorite shows on KCSM TV will still be here. While some of your favorites may not be, we promise to work diligently to bring you fresh, new programs to stimulate your mind.

We're excited about some of the new programming opportunities that will be available to us later in the year, but right now, we are bringing you a schedule that celebrates summer, vacations, being outdoors and having fun, while staying true to the theme nights you have come to appreciate. As always, we want to know what you think, so feel free to email me directly at marilyn@ kcsm.net. From our team here at KCSM, we can't thank you enough for your continued, unwavering support. You are why we are here, and we need you now more than ever. Sincerely,

Marilyn Lawrence General Manager

T h e G r e e n Pa g e Dear Green Readers,

In our May guide, I announced our decision to use less pages, therefore less paper, which included discontinuing the alphabetical program listings usually found at the end of this guide, and I asked for your feedback. I ‘d like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you that responded. And to let you know that your comments and suggestions were truly appreciated and that you have been heard.

While we will not be bringing back the A-Z program listings in the paper guide, we do make them available, as well as the entire guide, as a download at our website at www.kcsm.org/tv. Additionally, if you decide that you prefer accessing On Air by download each month, you may always request to discontinue receiving the guide by mail. Simply email your name and address to me at green@kcsm.net with “Opt Out” in the subject line. The other comment that I heard from many of you was that the late night programs were no longer listed anywhere in the guide. This was definitely an oversight and we appreciate that you brought it to our attention. We have adjusted the format from two to three columns and added the overnight listings. I hope that these changes have addressed all of your concerns adequately.

You may have noticed a little extra green here this month. Our long time printer, Descalso Lithograph was recently purchased by GPM Print•Mail•Solutions in Rohnert Park. While meeting with GPM, they suggested that we take advantage of the possibility of using color on pages other than the cover at no additional cost. The printing process involves using plates on a 4-color press. And since the plate that includes the cover is printed using color inks, we could easily incorporate color into other pages on the same plate. This is why you will only see color on certain pages throughout. And we use soy-based inks that are much more ecologically friendly than traditional commercial inks. Also, GPM is committed to operating an environmentally friendly manufacturing plant with many recycled papers available and an extensive waste recycling program. We are continually working diligently at improving the quality and content of On Air for you while keeping in mind the environmental impact of producing a monthly guide. Make sure to do your part by dropping it in the recycling bin when you have finished with it each month. And remember to visit www.kcsm.org/green for suggestions and resources for becoming an eco-freak like myself. As always, thanks for your continued support of KCSM. And keep living green! Sincerely,

James Mason Ball

Jazz 91 Spotlight on Pete Fallico

As a teenager, Pete Fallico (pictured)wanted nothing more than to become a full time disc jockey. His dad wanted him to become an educator instead. Studying the human voice in college seemed a happy medium and a thirty-six year career as a speech therapist ensued. Helping people communicate during the day while playing jazz recordings at night on a local radio station soon became a comfortable compromise. Pete Fallico has been programming Jazz Radio in the San Francisco and Monterey Bay Areas since 1975. His efforts have been heard on KKUP, KPEN, KUSP and KCSM. His show was initially called ‘Doodlin’ (after the Horace Silver classic) but it soon evolved into ‘The Doodlin’ Lounge’ where fantasy prevailed and emphasis was placed on Blue Note recording artists and Hard Bop grooves. These shows are now being podcast from Pete’s web site: www.doodlinlounge.com Pete has made a concerted effort through the years to make friends with the greatest Jazz Organists of our time and showcase their music whenever possible. Today, as a programmer on KCSM, Pete controls these organ-urges in order to provide his listeners with a more generic presentation of American Classical Music. The theme, however, is always on the blue side. Listen to Pete every Tuesday night/Wednesday morning from 10pm2am on Evening Jazz.

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 7/6

Pianist Erroll Garner

7/13 Wes Montgomery Wes Montgomery (pictured) created the first new sound on jazz guitar since Charlie Christian revolutionized the instrument in the late '30s. His innovations such as his celebrated octaves, and his style of playing with his thumb rather than a pick continue to have an influence today. Wes also became a popular musician, whose later recordings sold hundreds of thousands of copies.

7/20 Billie Holiday Billie Holiday (pictured) was the consummate jazz singer. She could take any song and make it her own. She could re-work a melody, sing a lyric with impeccable diction, add her unique phrasing and embrace it with the raw emotional intensity of her life experience. All of the great bandleaders loved Lady Day: Count Basie, Lionel Hampton, Artie Shaw. Billie's personal battles are legendary—with a racist society, with men, with drugs—and it was that pain that fueled her songs. But she worked at her craft, found her own voice, and inspired countless singers and musicians. This show focuses on Billie's music and its impact on jazz.

7/14 Ahmad Jamal A legend among masters, Ahmad Jamal’s (pictured) career has spanned half a century. Miles Davis once asked his own pianist Wynton Kelly to “sound more like Ahmad Jamal. Jamal brings his deft touch and perfect balance to the House of Swing to create space all his own. With his trio, Jamal leads his signature Poinciana, Jimmy Heath’s Mellow Drama and his new composition Papillon. And of course more! We are delighted to welcome him to our stage.

7/21 James Carter and Craig Taborn 7/28 So What About Eddie Jefferson?

Eddie Jefferson (pictured) didn’t have a great voice, but he was a great jazz singer. Twisting lyrics through well-known Jazz instrumentals, he created songs and a style all his own, transforming (James) Moody’s Mood for Love, Lester Young’s Paper Moon into Lester’s Trip to the Moon, and an infamous Miles track to Miles Davis Walked Off the Stage. Jefferson died tragically in 1979. Vocalists Carla Cook and Allan Harris join pianist Eric Reed to honor the pioneer of vocalese.
