Thanks for Supporting Jazz On The Hill!

The second year of the return of Jazz on the Hill was another success! This year we expanded our festival to include a second Youth stage in the CSM Theater - it was a smashing success. The energy the up-and-coming musicians brought to the stage was inspiring. Outside on the main stage we had a fantastic lineup starting with Kenny Washington and ending with surprise guests Pete Escovedo (Percussions), Benny Velarde (Timbales) and Roger Glenn (Vibes/Flute) who had the audience on their feet. The KCSM staff would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in making this annual event happen. Without the participation of our volunteers, business community, local vendors, College of San Mateo and our loyal supporters who came to spend the day with us, this event would not be possible. Remember to mark the first Saturday in June 2015 for the next Jazz On The Hill!

JAZZSET WITH DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER Monday at 9 pm 7/7

Triveni with Avishai Cohen and Guest Anat Cohen The word Triveni is Sanskrit for three sacred rivers, flowing together. The group Triveni is Avishai Cohen, trumpet; Drew Gress, bass; Eric Harland, drums, with music by Cohen, Don Cherry and Charles Mingus. Sister Anat joins late on clarinet.

7/14 Ryan Truesdell and the Gil Evans Project at Newport The young orchestra leader found a treasure trove of Gil Evans arrangements, learned them phrase by phrase, and made a CD (Grammy-nominated in 2012) for the Evans Centennial. Performances are rare. Truesdell brings a big band to play them at Newport.

7/21 Bill Frisell and Music of John Lennon Like balloons floating above the Newport Jazz Festival, the guitarist and his group send up “Beautiful Boy,” “Come Together,” “In My Life,” and a piece by the late drummer Paul Motian. Frisell opens on violinist Jenny Scheinman’s stage, playing duets.

7/28 Charles Lloyd at Newport For his uncompromising, serious music, the 2011 Newport Jazz Festival was eager to present Charles Lloyd. He could bring any group, they told him. Charles said he would bring Sangam (means confluence), his east-west trio with Zakir Hussain on tablas, Eric Harland on drums, and Lloyd on saxophone. Join three musical spirits, flowing together.

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm 7/1

Nash's The Presidential Suite reflects on leadership and oratory with help from "The Wire" and "Treme" star Wendell Pierce. Goines presents Crescent City, a musical journey through his hometown, New Orleans – joined by lifelong friend Branford Marsalis.

7/15 Dizzy’s Atmospheres An acoustic cocktail mixed by the masters: saxophonist Phil Woods, pianist Cedar Walton, and trombonist Steve Turre. Real club jazz - shaken, stirred, and captured live at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.

7/22 Music Of The Modern Jazz Quartet From its start in 1952, The Modern Jazz Quartet had a cool, understated style that belied its complexity, combining classical music structures with the deep swing of jazz. Our quartet honors the late modern masters.

7/29 Monty Alexander: Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra Monty Alexander discovered jazz at a Nat King Cole concert and played his first New York gig at Sinatra’s old haunt called “Jilly’s.” Alexander offers fresh, inventive readings on Sweet Lorraine, Come Fly with Me, and more – with vocalists James DeFrances and Allan Harris.
