2015 Jazz On The Hill Highlights The rich sound of jazz filled the College of San Mateo as KCSM hosted our annual Jazz On The Hill Festival. Great music, food and local artisans made this a day to remember.

SONG TRAVELS WITH MICHAEL FEINSTEIN Monday at 9 pm 7/6
Betty Buckley
Tony Award-winning vocalist and actress Betty Buckley debuted the role of Grizabella in the original Broadway production of Cats and has had a lifelong career on the stage and screen. This week, Buckley brings her leading-lady vocals to a performance of Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered, and Feinstein joins in for You Made Me Love You.
7/13 Lari White
Vocalist and producer Lari White is known as Nashville’s “Renaissance Woman.” She made history as the first female producer of a male superstar for Toby Keith’s Platinum album White Trash Money. On this edition of Song Travels, White performs Willie Nelson’s Crazy along with standards by the Gershwins and Rodgers & Hammerstein.

Vocalist/songwriter José James draws his musical inspiration from hip hop and indie rock in addition to jazz and R&B. This week, James remembers Billie Holiday, who was born 100 years ago this past April, and performs her classics Loverman and I Thought About You.
7/27 Hilary Gardner
Vocalist Hilary Gardner made her debut on Broadway in Twyla Tharp’s musical Come Fly Away, singing solos and duets with Frank Sinatra to much critical acclaim. In 2014, she released her debut solo album, The Great City. Gardner evokes memories of another time and place with her take on Tom Waits’ ballad Drunk on the Moon.

A Celebration of Coleman Hawkins
Pianist Eric Reed celebrates the 110th birthday of tenor saxophone master Coleman Hawkins. Reed brings Tivon Pennicott, tenor saxophone; Warren Vache, cornet; Dezron Douglas, bass; and drummer Willie Jones III to honor his legacy. Includes interviews with Eric Reed, Tivon Pennicott and historian/tenor saxophonist Loren Schoenberg.
7/14 Marcus Roberts at Jazz at Lincoln Center
Introducing Marcus Roberts and The Modern Jazz Generation. Roberts’ new 11-piece ensemble, featuring many of his younger protégé, perform original material by Roberts and the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Chick Corea, and Horace Silver. Includes interviews with Roberts and the members of the ensemble about the formation of the band in Tallahassee, Florida and explores what it means to teach jazz through mentorship.
7/21 Anat Cohen at Jazz at Lincoln Center
Choro, which means “to cry” in Portuguese, is a genre often referred to as “The New Orleans Jazz of Brazil.” Israeli clarinetist and saxophonist Anat Cohen leads Choro Aventuroso, a culmination of both her affinity and intense study of Choro music as part of an international community of jazz players during her days studying at Berklee College of Music in Boston.

Jazz Night in America explores jazz prodigies from different eras, including 11-year-old pianist, Joey Alexander, whose first album came out this spring.

Dwike Mitchell
Pianist Dwike Mitchell (1930 – 2013) joined bassist and French horn soloist Willie Ruff, creating a stir across the globe as they gained recognition for their elegant sound. On this 1990 Piano Jazz, Mitchell demonstrates his formidable technique on Lush Life.
Willie Ruff
Willie Ruff is a master of the bass and the French horn, which he reveals as a singularly beautiful jazz instrument. In this 1991 Piano Jazz session, Ruff plays horn on Prelude to a Kiss and bass on There is No Greater Love.
7/15 Rio Clemente
Rio Clemente was educated at the Juilliard School of Music, and classical music paved the way for his vibrant career in jazz playing with the likes of Bucky Pizzarelli, Milt Jackson, and Bobby Hackett. On this 2004 Piano Jazz, Clemente performs his own composition Allegria.
7/22 Corky Hale
Multi-instrumentalist Corky Hale has been blazing trails since her career began, as Mel Tormé’s pianist and teaming up with Billie Holiday in Las Vegas and LA. On this 1993 Piano Jazz, Hale performs Yesterdays on the harp and duets with McPartland on Tea for Two.
7/29 Skitch Henderson
Skitch Henderson (1918 – 2005) worked as a piano soloist on Frank Sinatra’s and Bing Crosby’s radio shows. On this 1992 episode of Piano Jazz, Henderson plays one of his own compositions, the theme song from the film Act 1.

7/9 The Billy Higgins Legacy Band
The Billy Higgins Legacy Band, recorded at the 11th Annual Healdsburg Jazz Festival at the Palette Art Cafe’ on June 2nd, 2009. Another edition of the Billy Higgins Band appears this Saturday July 11th at 8PM, at Musically Minded Academy in Oakland.
7/16 The Jeff Denson Trio
The Jeff Denson Trio, joined by legendary alto saxophonist Lee Konitz, recorded on Feb. 4, 2015, at Yoshi’s in Oakland, with drummer Jon Arkin, and pianist Dan Zemelman.
7/23 Hafez Modirzadeh
Saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh returned from Fulbright research in Turkey to dismantle his own chromodal system within the jazz tradition, playing originals, and masterfully assisted by Mark Levine, Akira Tana, and John Wiitala.
7/30 Ellen Robinson and Debbie Poryes
Vocalist Ellen Robinson and pianist Debbie Poryes in a first ever collaboration, recorded at the Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland, on March 8, 2015.
