Jazz On The Hill 2016
June 4th was a great day of live Jazz at College of San Mateo, the home of KCSM. We opened the show with SFJazz High School All-Stars Combo, a great group of up-and-coming high school jazz musicians directed by the renowned saxophonist and educator Danny Zinn. Up next was Etienne Charles: Creole Photo: Etienne Charles at Jazz On The Hill 2016 Soul who mixed rock, reggae, belair Credit: 2016 © Curtis Anderson and kongo into a sound rooted in Afro-Caribean culture. Then the sistahs took the stage, and they wowed the crowd. These three amazingly talented musicians brought their unique styles together to celebrate great women in music, Abbey Lincoln, Nina Simone, Betty Carter and Joni Mitchell, and they did them justice! Next up was Charlie Musselwhite who (literally) blew the crowd away with his dynamic harmonica blues. The crowd was on their feet dancing the afternoon away.

Closing down the festival was the San Francisco Latin Jazz Youth Ensemble, another talented group of young musicians, 12-18 year-olds, who kept the crowd on their feet salsa-ing to their intoxicating rhythms. We couldn't have asked for a better day: great warm weather, awesome live jazz, local artisans, interesting food and vendors! We hope to see you next year, the first Saturday in June, for Jazz On The Hill 2017. Photo: Charlie Musselwhite at Jazz On The Hill 2016 Credit: 2016 © Curtis Anderson

THE TADD DAMERON HORNS: Ernie Henry
One of the few bebop alto saxophonists who didn’t sound like Charlie Parker, Henry was a favorite of Thelonious Monk and Kenny Dorham, both of whom he made classic records with. His biting attack and earthy rhythms had grit and soul, and his individual phrasing made well-worn standards sound like original songs.
7/11 Wardell Gray
Through a series of epic tenor saxophone battles with Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray rose to prominence in Los Angeles in the mid-40’s. He did time in the bands of Count Basie and Benny Goodman, and combined an even tone and attack with crystal clear ideas and a relentless swing feel.
7/18 Fats Navarro
Probably the best remembered of the Tadd Dameron horns, Navarro stood alongside Dizzy Gillespie as one of the two most influential bebop trumpet players in the early days of the music. His technique and tone dazzled, but his greatest genius lay in the intelligence and harmony laid out in his eighth note lines.
7/25 Allen Eager
Tenor saxophonist Allen Eager came straight out of the tradition of Lester Young, but bent his soft tone and relaxed swing around the new feels and ideas of modern jazz, and in doing so was in the vanguard of a sound that would eventually bloom into the West Coast/cool tradition of tenor playing.

Randy Weston in Panama
Randy Weston turns 90 this year and Jazz Night in America presents his quintet at the 2016 Panama Jazz Festival, where the pianist was the guest of honor. Bandmate T.K. Blue weighs in on Weston’s humility and host Christian McBride travels to his home to speak about the set in Panama, meeting Thelonious Monk, and growing up in Brooklyn.
7/12 Sabertooth Saturday Night
Every year for about 23 years, one group has held a midnight to 5 a.m. time slot on Saturday nights. It’s a quirky band, co-led by saxophonist Pat Mallinger and Cameron Pfiffner, which swings hard (and a little off-kilter) among the hardcore fans, the rowdy drunks, the musicians coming off their own gigs. Jazz Night in America follows Pat and Cameron to the gig, then stays up all night with the Sabertooth organ quartet.
7/19 Wayne Shorter at Jazz at Lincoln Center
Wayne Shorter revisits some of his most career-defining work in this rare opportunity to hear a true jazz master exploring his back catalog. Joined by the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra, Shorter touches on a lifetime of brilliance and trail-blazing in this special episode.
7/26 George Wein (Newport Jazz Festival 2015) George Wein Turns 90!
Jazz Night in America visits with George Wein — jazz impresario, jazz musician, and founder of the Newport Jazz Festival. We help him celebrate his 90th birthday with selections from the 2015 festival.
