Highlights D-Day: The Price of Freedom
Follow the stories of the courageous men who began the liberation of France more than 60 years ago. Five veterans—some of whom were returning to Normandy for the first time since 1944—make an emotional journey to the American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach, the final resting place of 9,000 of their fallen comrades. There, each speaks candidly about the unimaginable horror, despair and fear of the day, and explore why these aging men remain heroes to the French people. Sunday, June 3 at 8:00 pm
A Gathering of Heroes In 2004, the United State dedicated a long-awaited memorial to the 16 million men and women who served in the armed forces during World War II, the 400,000 who died in Europe and the Pacific and those who toiled in factories on the home front. A touching and inspirational story of World War II veterans from Indiana who embarked on a cross-country trek to Washington, D.C. to visit the memorial which honors their sacrifice, reminiscing about their war experiences and sharing tales of struggle and survival. Sunday, June 3 at 9:00 pm
Seaside Story Each summer, the small New Jersey borough known as Seaside Heights undergoes a major transformation. Thousands of visitors from all walks of life flock to its beach and boardwalk in search of the distinctly "Jersey" brand of sun and fun. Follow the ups and downs of three family-run businesses, and discover the hopes and worries of business owners whose livelihood and success depend upon the powerful draw of the ocean and the amusements, and ebb with the unpredictable weather and price of gas. Thursday, June 7 at 10:00 pm
Nickels From Heaven

The surviving six members of the troop provide first-hand accounts of their service and reflect on their impact on American history. Thunderbolts of Melville Discover WWII's impact on the civilians of one quaint New Jersey town. Because of its proximity to Philadelphia, the War Department christened Cumberland County's Millville Army Air Field "America's First Defense Airport " in 1941. And between 1942 and 1945, the air field employed more than 10, 000 men and women, while its gunnery school provided advanced fighter training to 1,500 pilots. Then, the air field was abandoned after the war ended and Millville returned to its sleepy-town status. Sunday, June 17 at 10:30 pm
The Last Ridge More than 60 years ago, the 10th Mountain Division did the impossible in the mountains of Italy, scaling a 2000 foot cliff on a cold winter night to knock the Germans from their impenetrable perch. But the 10th Mountain did more than turn the tide for the Allies in Italy. They revolutionized winter mountain warfare abroad, transformed winter sports at home, and blazed a path of honor for generations to come. This is the remarkable story of how the 10th Mountain Division came to be.

Afghanistan: The Surge
Follow a platoon of skilled, motivated Marines filled with the best of intentions, who where sent to a remote outpost to eliminate the Taliban's influence. Only it didn't work out that way. The Taliban didn't stand and fight, instead, using simple IEDs, they crippled Marine mobility and kept Marines hemmed into a narrow valley while the Taliban ran things from its untouchable headquarters only eight miles from the Marine outpost. Sunday, June 24 at 9:00 pm
Failing Haiti
Haiti, a nation forged by a slave rebellion 200 years ago, briefly appeared to emerge from oppression and dictatorship with the return of charismatic priest JeanBertrand Aristide in 2000. Yet today, Haiti remains caught in a tragic, downward spiral. Examine the international community's efforts to rebuild the Caribbean country's economy and impose democratic values, on a country whose history is marked by political intrigue, corruption, drug smuggling, power struggles, covert militias and a seemingly endless series of policy blunders. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and special guests Rebecca Kilgore and Carol Woods perform classics from the vast Mercer catalog.

Americans danced the Lindy Hop in the height of swing fever. And The Wizard of Oz raised the art of the film score to new standards with the talented team of Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and guests visit America’s postDepression culture, performing 1939 pop tunes.

Jazz In Song: The Words
6/11 Jazz In Song: The Singing Instrumentalists Many jazz instrumentalists have stepped into the singer's role—Fats Waller, Nat "King" Cole (pictured), Jack Teagarden, and Chet Baker, to name a few. With their mastery of phrasing, such musicians have transferred their talents into song in distinctive ways.
6/18 Jazz In Song: The Jazz Standard 6/25 Vocalist Carmen McRae Carmen McRae (pictured) was an outstanding song stylist whose great strength was in her phrasing and interpretation of lyrics. She was also an excellent pianist, whose personal approach and musicianship developed during her occasional performances at Minton's Playhouse during the early years of bebop.

6/12 Nursery Song Swing The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra try their hand at another book of classics – these standards include Chicken Rhythm, Three Blind Mice and Liza Jane. Wynton and the orchestra give a big band twist to children’s classics. Guest soloist, 16 year old saxophonist Grace Kelly (pictured), 17 year old tenor saxophonist/clarinetist Carl Majeau and 13 year old violinist Jonathan Russell join Wynton on stage. The perfect way to end the school year and start the summer!
6/19 Monty Alexander: Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra 6/26 Soul Jazz of the 60s In the nineteen sixties — as rock music was changing the pop world — saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, pianist Horace Silver and drummer Art Blakey drew bebop, rhythm and blues, and gospel into a powerful small-group sound. Alto saxophonist Wess "Warmdaddy " Anderson and drummer Kenny Washington lead inspired sets in tribute to their soulful predecessors.

6/13 Rickie Lee Jones Two-time Grammy-winning singer/songwriter Rickie Lee Jones has been pushing down musical boundaries for over four decades with her hauntingly beautiful voice and fearless experimentation. She has carved her own unique path, collaborating with artists from Alison Krauss to Dr. John. On this Song Travels, Jones employs her sultry, dynamic voice to sing some of the standards that have inspired her along the way.
6/20 Wayne Brady
Wayne Brady became a household name improvising on the popular TV show, Whose Line Is It Anyway? The singer/actor/dancer/comedian has also appeared in the stage productions Rent and Chicago, and he became host of the game show Let's Make a Deal in 2009. On this week’s Song Travels, Brady discusses his two major musical influences: Sammy Davis Jr. and Sam Cooke. With his musical director Cat Gray at the piano, Brady performs the Cooke classic, You Send Me, and Feinstein joins Brady in a duet of It’s Only a Paper Moon.

JAZZSET WITH DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER Thursday at 9 pm 6/7
Russell Malone Trio at the KC Jazz Club, Washington, DC In his current guitar/bass/drums trio—"not having the piano there taking up all that space," Russell says—Malone lets the music breathe into his full, round, rich tone. This is not to say that he doesn't play exuberantly. He uses his most amazing chops to serve the songs. The up tempo tunes swing, the ballads melt.
6/14 Trumpeter Sean Jones at the Detroit Jazz Festival 6/21 Tribute to Abbey Lincoln from Dee Dee Bridgewater, Dianne Reeves and Cassandra Wilson at the Kennedy Center Abbey's musical daughters sing her songbook: Bird Alone and It's Supposed To Be Love (Reeves), Wholly Earth and Another World (Bridgewater), Throw It Away and Talking to the Sun (Wilson), I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou, and Freedom Day from We Insist: Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite. Grammy Award winner Terri Lyne Carrington leads the band.
