JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 6/3
Pianist/Composer Chick Corea
6/10 Saxophonist Sonny Rollins He speaks in a thoughtful, deliberate way that leaves no room for hesitation, a quality that mirrors his distinctive playing. Sonny Rollins (b. 1930) is widely considered the world's greatest living tenor saxophonist. He grew up in the Sugar Hill neighborhood of Harlem, where he primed his chops with other up-and-coming notables. Before age twenty, he was already recording with J.J. Johnson, Bud Powell, and Miles Davis, and later became a member of the legendary Clifford Brown - Max Roach quintet. A highly self-critical player, the elusive Rollins has taken numerous hiatuses from the music industry to, according to him, work on both his playing and himself. After more than fifty years at his craft, he still pursues his original dream "to change the world through music." Photo credit: Phil Bfey
6/17 Vibraphonist Milt Jackson 6/24 Pianist Hank Jones One of the greatest instrumentalists in jazz, pianist Hank Jones is a master whose distinctive style is informed by more than fifty years of music-making, from stride to bebop and beyond. Wherever his musical explorations lead, Jones always plays with flawless musical taste and an amazingly even tone, with each note artfully placed. He's a favorite accompanist for others, five years backing Ella. Photo credit: jimmy katz
JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm 6/4
Soul Jazz of the 60s In the nineteen sixties – as rock music was changing the pop world, saxophonist Cannonball Adderley, pianist Horace Silver and drummer Art Blakey drew bebop, rhythm and blues and gospel into a powerful small-group sound. Alto saxophonist Wess ‘Warmdaddy’ Anderson and drummer Kenny Washington lead inspired sets in tribute to their soulful predecessors.
6/11 Gillespie and Puente 6/18 God’s Trombones “The trombone comes the closest to the human voice with its bent pitches, scoops and smears, and that very human quality is evident in everything that (James Weldon) Johnson wrote,” says Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra trombonist Chris Crenshaw. Crenshaw draws on his gospel roots to connect secular music to poetry in this sprawling suite based on the James Weldon Johnson poem.
