Summer Sunday News! By Alisa Clancy Jazz91 Program Director
Hot off the press: Big Band Jump host Don Kennedy is retiring! Don has a gaggle of fans (myself included) and I want to make sure that Sunday mornings keep swingin' between 6 and 8am. Beginning June 8th, Clint Baker will be the host of Breakfast, Dance & Barbecue. Clint promises to keep the spirit with Big Band, Basie, New Orleans & Traditional Jazz in that time-slot. As a long-time Bay Area bandleader and historian, Clint knows his stuff and I'm pretty sure the fun factor will be high. Also beginning that same date Riverwalk Jazz will be replaced by a new show, Rhythm Retrospective hosted by a Bay Area festival favorite, pianist Carl Sonny Leyland. It's Blues, Roots, R&B, Rockabilly. You name it…Carl gets into it, 6pm Sundays. Then, look out! We’ve lit up the calibrated candle in the Purple Grotto for a re-visit…we do keep it just as he left it you know! You'll want to hear Summer in the Grotto with Al Jazzbeaux Collins. I've culled 13 of Al's best shows and it'll make your lobes glow. Sunday nights at 8. All beginning June 8th…the day after Jazz on the Hill!

Amir El Saffar and Two Rivers at Newport From his Iraqi heritage, El Saffar plays the santur and from his Chicago childhood, the trumpet. His band has both sides too, with lute-like oud and buzuq, tenor sax, bass and drums. The music rocks. Commissioned by the 2013 Newport Jazz Festival.

Regina Carter & Wynton Marsalis With her violin plus accordion & kora, MacArthur Fellow Regina Carter weaves sound tapestries from traditional African melodies. Trumpeter Marsalis & his long-time group delight Newport with Big Fat Hen from The Magic Hour, his album for children. It’s irresistible.
6/16 John Ellis and Double-Wide & Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society The tenor man’s band has a New Orleans carnival feel with trombone & sousaphone, Jason Marsalis on drums, and Gary Versace on organ & accordion. Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society gives a taste of Argue’s imaginative theatrical piece for orchestra, Brooklyn Babylon.
6/23 Lewis Nash Quintet & Kurt Elling Kurt Elling sings from his album 1619 Broadway: The Brill Building Project, named for a famous address in songwriting. And class act drummer Lewis Nash leads his fine band with Jeremy Pelt and Jimmy Greene on trumpet and tenor.
6/30 Miguel Zenón & Laurent Coq & The Dafnis Prieto Sextet Miguel and Dafnis are a pair of MacArthur Foundation Fellows, Miguel from Puerto Rico, Dafnis from Cuba. Zenón and the French pianist Coq are inspired by the 1966 novel Rayuela (Hopscotch) by Julio Cortázar. Drummer Prieto premieres Two for One, commissioned by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation, with music from his album Taking the Soul for a Walk.
JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm 6/3
Vijay Iyer MacArthur Grant recipient and master pianist Vijay Iyer makes his debut at the House of Swing. Bassist Stephan Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore round out Iyer’s critically acclaimed trio.
6/10 Eddie Palmieri Retrospective ‘La Perfecta’, pianist/composer Palmieri’s first band, describes his perfect mix of driving Afro-Cuban grooves & jazz rhythms. Palmieri leads the Eddie Palmieri Orchestra & AfroCaribbean Jazz Octet, in this high-octane retrospective, honoring his half century of music.
6/17 Fresh Sounds: Ted Nash & Victor Goines JALC Orchestra members Ted Nash and Victor Goines present two newly commissioned works. Nash’s The Presidential Suite reflects on leadership and oratory. Goines presents Crescent City, a musical journey through New Orleans, joined by friend Branford Marsalis.
6/24 Re-imagined: The Music of Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea Pianists Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea are kindred spirits, imaginative composers who have fused and redefined the sound of jazz. And we re-imagine works from both of their songbooks. The Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with guest Bobby Hutcherson plays the music of Herbie Hancock. The Manhattan Transfer with Jon Hendricks interprets Chick Corea.
