THE ANNALS OF JAZZ WITH RICHARD HADLOCK Sundays at 7 pm

The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of "The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

Madeline Peyroux

Vocalist Madeleine Peyroux started out busking on the streets of Paris, but went on to gain international acclaim for her versions of beloved folk tunes and jazz standards. Peyroux talks about her love of song and covers a Buddy Holly tune, Changing All Those Changes.

Kate Davis

Hailed as a “talent not to be missed” by The Herald Tribune, vocalist/bassist/songwriter Kate Davis performed at such prestigious venues as The Kennedy Center and Rockwood Music Hall. This week, Davis performs her original songs Movie and Every Good Girl is a Unicorn.

6/15 André Previn

Conductor/composer/pianist André Previn has received multiple Lifetime Achievement Awards, has more than fifty years of recordings to his credit and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II. This week Previn explores some of his favorite compositions.

6/22 Dee Dee Bridgewater

In honor of Billie Holiday’s centennial, Grammy-winning vocalist/actress Dee Dee Bridgewater, who embodied the late singer in Lady Day shares her experience playing Holiday and performs God Bless the Child and Good Morning Heartache.

6/29 Jon Regen

Pianist/vocalist/composer Jon Regen was an apprentice of the renowned pianist Kenny Barron. This week Regan performs the title track from his 2015 album Stop Time and joins Michael Feinstein for a duet of Young and Foolish.

Akua Dixon at the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival

A visit to Sistas’ Place in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn to take in cellist Akua Dixon’s performance at the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival. Dixon is also joined by her two children: vocalist Andromeda Turre and drummer Orion Turre.

The release party for Washington's music of The Epic in its full glory, from the Regent Theater in Downtown L.A., complete with his working band, a choir, and a string section.

6/16 Henry Threadgill

Henry Threadgill's music has always pushed boundaries. The saxophonist/flautist/composer turned 70 this year and Harlem Stage presented a special concert celebrating and reassembling some of Threagill’s most influential bands to present this rare retrospective.

6/23 “Beautiful Life”: Jimmy Green at Jazz at Lincoln Center

Saxophonist Jimmy Greene paid tribute to his daughter, Ana, who was killed in the Newtown Massacre, by composing an album to reflect the way she lived.

6/30 David Murray

David Murray is known as one of New York's most monstrously talented and astoundingly prolific artists — a tenor saxophonist who has played and written for just about every imaginable context.

Doc Cheatham

Trumpeter Adolphus “Doc” Cheatham (1905 – 1997) was known for his signature slight burr that gave his solos an edge, but with a warm and elegant approach. He toured late into his life, with some of his best recordings from this later stage. On this 1992 Piano Jazz, Cheatham and McPartland play Give Me a Kiss to Build a Dream On and I Double Dare You.

6/10 Hazel Scott

Pianist and vocalist Hazel Scott (6/11/1920 – 1981) was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. A child prodigy, she had a life-long career as a jazz artist on stage and screen, performing late into her life throughout the US and Europe. On this 1980 Piano Jazz, Scott joins host McPartland for a duet in Fine and Dandy and Mary Lou Williams’ Kool Bongo.

6/17 Gerry Mulligan

Gerry Mulligan (1927 – 1996) was best known as a baritone saxophonist. He was pivotal in developing the West Coast jazz sound and was featured in big bands for years. He also composed and performed symphonic music and played piano. In this 1987 Piano Jazz Mulligan performs his original compositions Ontet and Good Neighbor Thelonious. He and McPartland wrap up the program with a duet of Blues Angst.

6/24 Tierney Sutton

Six-time Grammy nominee, vocalist Tierney Sutton is one of the hottest jazz artists working today. When Sutton came on Piano Jazz in 2004, she had just released her album Dancing in the Dark, a tribute to Frank Sinatra. Sutton performs a set of standards, and she and McPartland team up to perform Last Night When We Were Young.

John O’Gallagher

New York based alto saxophonist John O’Gallagher and his trio at Chez Hanny in San Francisco, on April 26th, 2015. With bassist Johannes Weidenmueller and drummer Mark Ferber.

6/ 11 The Patrick Wolff Sextet

The Patrick Wolff Sextet, recorded at last summer’s Stanford Jazz Festival, at Campbell Recital Hall on July 22nd, 2014. With trumpeter Mike Olmos, pianist Adam Shulman, bassist John Wiitala, and drummer Hamir Atwal.

6/18 The Kristen Strom Quintet

The Kristen Strom Quintet, with “Remembering Stan Getz,” featuring vocalist Jackie Ryan, recorded at last year’s Stanford Jazz Festival, at Dinkelspiel Auditorium, on July 13th, 2014. With guitarist Scott Sorkin, pianist Fred Harris, bassist John Shifflett and drummer Jason Lewis.

6/25 Malachi Whitson

Former Brubeck Institute Fellow and recent University Of Pacific graduate drummer Malachi Whitson returned to the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, with a lecture/performance on February 7th, 2015, in tribute to the great tenor master Joe Henderson. With Teodross Avery, Sean Britt and Giulio Cetto.
