A huge Thank You! to all our volunteers who answered the call (literally and figuratively) during our Spring 2016 pledge drive. They get up early and stay late to help us raise the funds necessary to keep our station on the air, and we wouldn't be here with them, and YOU! have you heard with Patrick wolff Monday at 9 pm 6/6 Ian Carey
A mainstay on the Bay Area scene, ace trumpet player Ian Carey has distinguished himself by leading bands, releasing records, and writing funny and incisive blogs about jazz. This show will feature Ian in-studio, talking about his approach, his new album “Interview Music”, and most likely, the state of affairs in the jazz world.
6/13 Frank Strozier
One of the great bebop stylists of the 1960s, alto saxophonist Frank Strozier had a unique sound that balanced warmth and bite, a driving rhythmic feel, and a singular command of harmony in his lines. When he quit playing and dropped from the scene in the 1970s, he left the jazz world wanting more.
6/20 Masahiko Togashi
Masahiko Togashi was one of the most heavily recorded Japanese jazz musicians, a percussionist with an idiosyncratic sound who was a master of the freer forms. A spinal injury limited his ability to travel and tour, but his talent was such that many international musicians made the trip to Japan to record and play with him.
6/27 Anachronic Jazz Band
As much a great thought experiment as a successful band, the Anachronic Jazz Band is a formation of French jazz musicians that play classic bebop repertoire by Thelonious Monk and Charlie Parker, but in the style of late 1920’s and early 1930’s traditional jazz. Although it seems like a joke on paper, their dead on stylistic accuracy and compelling instrumentalists make the music vital and appealing, and demonstrates the flimsiness of the boundaries between different styles of jazz.

Upcomers and Upstarts: Late Night at Jazz at Lincoln Center
In an effort to find out what drives JALC’s Programmer/Vocalist Michael Mwenso and his young, eager and talented cohorts, Jazz Night in America poses as a fly on the wall as they listen to records, and present their own music after hours at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola.
6/14 The Conversation Continues
Arturo O’Farrill pays tribute to Afro-Cuban music and the collaborations that have helped this music grow and thrive, despite years of political tumult. “The Conversation Continues” continues a conversation started decades ago between Cuban percussionist, Chano Pozo, and trumpeter, Dizzy Gillespie, by bringing together contemporary collaborations between American and Cuban musicians.
6/21 Harpin’ on Jazz
Jazz Night in America is exploring one of the least frequently used instruments in jazz — the harp! Groundbreaking harpists, Edmar Castaneda and Brandee Younger take the stage for two concerts from Jazz at Lincoln Center.
6/28 In Memory of Ornette Coleman
Deep from within the Jazz at Lincoln Center archives, a tribute concert to Ornette Coleman recorded with Ornette’s friend and long-time collaborator, Dewey Redman.

6/22 Benny Golson
Saxophonist and composer Benny Golson began studying piano as a child but was soon seduced by the tenor saxophone sounds he heard on jazz records. On this Piano Jazz from 2006, McPartland and bassist Rufus Reid join Golson to perform Along Came Betty and I Remember Clifford.
6/29 Valerie Capers
On this 1998 Piano Jazz, Capers shows off her classical chops when she solos on It Could Happen to You. Then she and McPartland swing out on Scrapple from the Apple.
