Jazz 91 Preview

Thanks To All Who Made Our Spring Pledge Drive A S uccess !

They say it takes a village, and for KCSM Jazz 91 that really is true. We all have to work together - the Announcers planning what will happen on air, the office staff coordinating everything behind the scenes, the volunteers donating their time to come and answer phones and you, our loyal listeners who show us your appreciation for what we do by donating to keep this station on the air. We can't do it without everyone "playing their part" and it is with heartfelt words we thank each and everyone who helped make our 2018 Spring Pledge Drive a success.....you truly are the "Member" in Member Supported Radio! Gratefully, the KCSM Staff

THE ANNALS OF JAZZ WITH RICHARD HADLOCK Sundays at 7 pm

The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of "The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

Eric Revis

Eric Revis established himself as a powerful and engaging sideman with Betty Carter and Branford Marsalis, with whom he has played for almost 20 years. In the last few years, Revis has stepped into the spotlight as a bandleader who shows a fearless drive to integrate textures and approaches from across the spectrum and history of jazz.

6/11 Steve Kuhn

Pianist Steve Kuhn has been a fixture on the scene since the late 1950’s, when he studied at the Lenox School with Ornette Coleman and Bill Evans. In the 1960s, he built a style that is creative and quirky while still firmly within the jazz language. Despite a relatively low profile, Kuhn has continued be active in NY and to record and release record after record of excellent trio, quintet, and solo outings.

6/18 The Instant Composer’s Pool

One of the longest-running large groups in jazz history, and one of the best-kept secrets of European jazz, the ICP virtually invented their own style. They sound like no other group, with a powerful and humorous style that embraces everything from early jazz and Ellington to noisy free-for-alls.

6/25 Johnny Smith

Johnny Smith was a cool-toned guitarist with phenomenal technique and a completely original language of eighth note based lines. His collaboration with Stan Getz on “Moonlight In Vermont” scored a hit in 1952, and he has remained a favorite among guitar players despite limited exposure in the landscape of jazz since the 1960’s.

DC Jazz Loft Trios (Radio + Video)

Jazz Night In America presents highlights from CapitalBop’s warehouse loft stage at the 2015 DC Jazz Festival, featuring three trios led by vibraphonist Warren Wolf, bassist Kris Funn, and alto saxophonist Gary Thomas.

6/12 Carlos Henriquez at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola

Jazz Night In America takes in a performance led by bassist Carlos Henriquez at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola, inside Jazz at Lincoln Center. The young Nuyorican composer brings together Afro-Latin traditions and his jazz pedigree to pay tribute to the family and the Bronx community that raised him.

6/19 The Ladybugs

Jazz Night in America dives into how The Ladybugs, a young band who draw on elements of hot swing, American folk music and blues in their intricate harmonies, developed on the New York jazz scene and what new things can be done with the Disney songbook. We also look back at the music of the early animation studios to examine the relationship between jazz and cartoon music through the decades.

6/26 Dave Holland and Zakir Hussain: Crosscurrents

Jazz Night in America captures Master Bassist Dave Holland and Tabla Virtuoso Zakir Hussain’s distinctive original compositions, Western jazz standards, 12-bar blues numbers, and Indian classical pieces, and explores the wider connection between jazz and Indian music throughout history.

Roy Haynes

Roy Haynes is one of the greatest living jazz drummers of a generation, with a career spanning seven decades. In 2016 he joined Jon Batiste and Stay Human on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, performing at age 91. On this 1996 Piano Jazz session he reminisces with McPartland about the 1940s Chicago jazz scene and the 1950s Boston scene.

6/13 Geri Allen

One year ago this month, the music world lost Geri Allen, a highly regarded and influential pianist, composer, and educator. Allen (6/12/57–6/27/17) died of cancer at age 60. A vital contributor to contemporary jazz, she was known for uniting disparate styles of jazz, and her style found its roots everywhere from Motown and James Brown to the music of Fats Waller and Thelonious Monk. In 2008, Geri joined Marian on her third appearance on Piano Jazz.

6/20 Marcia Ball

Pianist, vocalist, and songwriter Marcia Ball brings together Texas blues with Louisiana flavors, melding boogie-woogie, zydeco, and Swamp Rock. Influenced by artists of the region, Ball first came to the blues as a child listening to Etta James and learned the piano through a mix of formal and informal lessons. Marcia joins Marian on this 1997 Piano Jazz.

6/27 Andrew Hill

Pianist Andrew Hill (1931–2007) began playing jazz as a teenager in Chicago, and as he came of age, Hill played with jazz legends Miles Davis and Charlie Parker. He may be known best for his classic Blue Note recordings in the 1960s, which extended the possibilities of bop and hard bop through complex tunes. Andrew joins Marion on this 2005 Piano Jazz.

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Thursday at 9 pm 6/7

Tony Bennett

In this show, we watch the rising star of vocalist Tony Bennett in the ‘50s and ‘60s and learn how Bennett’s refusal to bend to the popular culture of the ‘60s and ‘70s nearly destroyed his recording career. We’ll also follow Tony Bennett as he came roaring back in the ‘80s.

6/14 Thelonious Monk

The sound of Pianist/Composer Thelonius Monk is one of the most recognizable in modern jazz. By the “plunk” or “thunk” of a single chord, his piano and compositions are unmistakable. An original on and off the bandstand, he was the launch pad of bebop, and also created a body of work in its own orbit.

6/21 Stanley Turrentine

Three elements made tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine’s music identifiable: clear tones, a down-home blues feeling, and pure emotion. In this portrait, produced shortly before his death, “Mr. T” reflects on his roots in blues and gospel, his recorded jazz standards, and the attention he drew when he ventured into “soul jazz.” In this program, Turrentine reflects on the choices he made during his 50-year career.

6/28 Carmen McRae

Vocalist Carmen McRae was an outstanding song stylist whose great strength was in her phrasing and interpretation of lyrics. She was also an excellent pianist, whose personal approach and musicianship developed during her occasional performances at Minton’s Playhouse during the early years of bebop.
