Dear KCSM Members, Lately many publications have touted the popularity of backyard vegetable gardens and staycations. In tough economic times, people often turn back to their own resources for a sense of satisfaction, an economic need or a desire to return to a more sustainable lifestyle. Many people harbor a secret (or not so secret) desire to express their inner creativity, but sometimes it's hard to know where to dive in and begin. Whether you are "crafty" or a "do-it-yourselfer" you'll find something of interest on KCSM. This month we have shows ranging from needle and fabric crafts (Quilt In A Day, Sewing With Nancy, Martha's Sewing Room,) to watercolor, oil or acrylic painting (Wyland's Art Studio, Gary Spetz's Painting Wild Places! With Watercolor or Best of the Joy of Painting,) to scrapbooking (Scrapbook Memories.)

Maybe you are the outdoor type and would like to know more about flyfishing (New Flyfisher, Fly Tying), gardening (Garden Smart), or learning a more health way of cooking (Delicious TV: Totally Vegetarian, Bake Decorate Celebrate!, Lidia's Italy, Healthy Flavors or Hey Kids, Let's Cook!) or bargecuing (Barbecue University With Steven Raichlen and Barbecue America.) If your wallet has been hit hard during these hard economic times, you can learn how to fix up your house (Katie Brown Workshop, American Woodshop) or maybe just learn a few small projects. If there's something that you'd like to watch and we aren't airing it, let us know by contacting Dante Betteo, Programming Development Manager (650) 524-6903 or email dante@kcsm.net. Let us help you get creative this spring. After all, as the old saying goes, "Idle hands are the devil's playmate!" Happy projecting! Sincerely,

Sinclair Crockett Business and Fundraising Manager

Inspector Morse This crime drama features Inspector Morse, the sensentimental detective who solves crimes intuitively, most often alone in his room while sipping his favorite ale and listening to classical music. He, along with his partner, the dependable Sargent Lewis investigate a variety of murderous crimes against the picturesque back-drop of Oxford, England. Every Monday, beginning March 8 at 8:00 pm

Twilight Zone One of television's most rightly revered series focuses on ordinary people who suddenly found themselves in extraordinary, usually supernatural situations. The stories would typically end with an ironic twist that would see the guilty punished. Creator Rod Serling wrote the majority of the scripts which feature such soon-to-be-famous actors as Robert Redford, William Shatner, Burt Reynolds, Robert Duvall, Dennis Hopper, Carol Burnett and many others.

Every Wednesday, beginning March 3 at 8:00 pm

Seneca Falls Travel on a life-changing journey with nine high school girls bound for the birthplace of women's rights in America. Part teenage road trip, part shocking history lesson, the film is, above all, an awakening of young hearts and minds. This one-hour documentary breathes life and relevance into a revolutionary act barely mentioned in history books: America's first women's rights convention, a public protest meeting held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. Sunday, March 7 at 10:00 pm

Bracing For A Quake: Survival Guide This earthquake preparedness special presents more than 80 practical tips on how to prepare for and respond to a major quake. Learn how to reduce earthquake hazards in the home and office, what to do on the freeway, shopping or in a crowded pubic place. Also discussed are the pros and cons of earthquake insurance, communication devices, preparing a plan for the family, and what to include in a wellequipped earthquake kit. Greetings from Asbury Park Angie, 91 lived through three decades of rust, riot and ruin in Asbury Park, the one-time postcard paradise of the Jersey Shore. Now the tiny bungalow that she called home for half her life will be seized by eminent domain. Once reserved for public projects, eminent domain is increasing being employed for private gain. Devastated by the impending loss, and bulldozers at her backdoor, follow her fight to save her little piece of the American Dream. Sunday, March 14 at 10:00 pm

Anuna: Celtic Origins Anuna, the original vocal group in Riverdance, has bridged the gap between classical and popular music with its pure, haunting, emotional and mystical sound. Spanning over 1,000 years of music history, 16 Anuna singers perform an ethereal blend of Irish, British, Middle English, Scots Gaelic, Meadival Irish, Latin and Greek choral music. The Gothic beauty of Cleveland's Trinity Cathedral, combined with dramatic lights, costumes, candles and ritualistic movements provides an atmospheric setting for the concert.

Wednesday, March 17 at 10:00 pm

Mary Lou Williams Centenary Celebration Happy 100th Birthday, Mary Lou Williams! The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, under the leadership of Artistic Director for Jazz Dr. Billy Taylor, continues to bring women jazz artists into the spotlight with the annual Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival, May 20-22, 2010, now celebrating its 15th year. 2010 marks the 100th Anniversary of Williams’ birth, and in that honor, the 15th Anniversary of the Festival features the compositions and arrangements of Mary Lou Williams. Award-winning vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater and acclaimed drummer Terri Lyne Carrington host the festival which features bassist Esperanza Spalding, pianist Geri Allen, big band DIVA and more. These ticketed events in the Terrace Theater will be recorded for future broadcast on NPR’s JazzSet with Dee Dee Bridgewater. pictured: Mary Lou Williams

Also in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Williams’ birth, the Kennedy Center has created the Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Emerging Artist Workshop, May 20–22, 2010, which provides female jazz artists ages 18 to 35 with an opportunity to explore and develop their artistry under the guidance of leading jazz artists and instructors. This three-day residency, dedicated to the spirit and style of Mary Lou Williams, provides instruction, insight and tools rooted in the foundations of jazz: swing, melody and harmony. Each year will focus on a specific instrument, 2010 highlighting the piano. The workshop culminates in a public performance by the participants on the Kennedy Center’s Millennium Stage on May 22, 2010. As one of the first women of jazz, Mary Lou Williams began as Pittsburgh’s “little piano girl” and proceeded to become a musical inspiration to the world. She was a pianist, composer and arranger of some of the genre’s greatest tunes—from boogie-woogie and blues to ragtime and swing, to impressionism, bop and beyond. She played alongside some of the greats: Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington and Thelonious Monk. Beyond her performing career, Mary Lou Williams was also a respected teacher, a noted humanitarian and a mentor to many other female artists who came after her. Mary Lou Williams died on May 28, 1981. With the inaugural Mary Lou Williams Women in Jazz Festival in 1996, Dr. Billy Taylor created the first comprehensive festival of this kind to be presented by a national arts organization. Blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon (pictured) had a deep, smoky voice and recorded dozens of albums and fronted bands and orchestras. Throughout his career, "Spoon" managed to span the worlds of blues, R&B and jazz with his deep baritone and unique style. His collaborators ranged from Count Basie to Eric Burdon, Gerry Mulligan to Van Morrison, and T-Bone Walker to Robben Ford.

3/15 Pianist Tommy Flanagan 3/22 Harry "Sweets" Edison Swinging and singing: both describe the unmistakable sound of Harry "Sweets" Edison (pictured, 1919-1999), one of the most important stylists in the history of jazz trumpet. Sweets plays with a simplicity born of sophisticated artistry. It propelled him to the Count Basie Band, which he joined in 1937, thereafter becoming one of its most frequently featured soloists. Celebrate Edison's spare style that blends subtle humor, impeccable timing and the sweetly muted tone that gave him his nickname.

3/29 Jackie McLean Alto saxophonist Jackie McLean (pictured) was one of the giants of jazz. His spare, sugar-free sound backed everyone from Charlie Parker to Miles Davis. In tribute to McLean, we'll listen again to this Jazz Profiles episode where McLean talks candidly about his life and times.

FM S tudio C onstruction U pdate

Construction crews are working all around KCSM. The bathrooms are being remodeled, landscaping is being planted outside the building and some walls in the FM area are coming down. Construction for KCSM FM is minimal, but the results will allow KCSM to have two control rooms. This won’t change the great jazz that you hear, but it will make it much easier and more efficient to run the station with such a small staff. We will also gain some ability to record artists in the control rooms during interviews and guest appearances. Our hopes are pictured: jazz 91 cd library expansion in progress to have our first of two control rooms ready by June 2010—stay tuned!
