JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 3/5
Miles Davis, Part 2: Kind of Blue
3/12 Vocalist Johnny Hartman He followed in the wake of Billy Eckstine and Nat "King" Cole, two singers who personified the "black baritone movement" of the late '40s and '50s. Overshadowed by these two, Hartman (pictured) never achieved the popularity he deserved. Through the release of the soundtrack to Clint Eastwood's Bridges Of Madison County and the rerelease of a recording with John Coltrane, the public has rediscovered this wonderful balladeer.
3/19 Reedman Sidney Bechet 3/26 Pianist/Composer/Bandleader Mary Lou Williams
Mary Lou Williams (pictured) achieved and maintained a status that many women in jazz found elusive: unwavering respect from male colleagues as a musical equal. Her accomplishments are many as arranger and pianist with Andy Kirk and his Twelve Clouds of Joy, with her own small groups, and with the be-bop artists of the '40s. Throughout, she was always - as Duke Ellington once said - "perpetually contemporary."

PIANO JAZZ RISING STARTS WITH JON WEBER Wednesday at 9 pm
3/7 Hiromi Virtuoso pianist and composer Hiromi Uehara (pictured) began her classical studies at age 6. Today she is an indemand jazz pianist able to play stride at blinding speed with deadly accuracy. More than a novelty, she is also a thoughtful, impressionistic composer. Hiromi’s mega chops are on display.

Vocalist Whitney James (pictured) studied musical theatre and opera before committing to jazz, and her theatrical background has served her well. Her acclaimed 2010 debut album, The Nature of Love, revealed a fully formed voice on a confident set of beloved standards. With host Jon Weber as accompanist, James brings her rich, full alto tone to tunes including Tenderly and If You Could See Me Now.

The group interprets music from Mali and Madagascar and dedicates a piece to New Orleans. Will Holshouser, Yacouba Sissoko, Chris Lightcap and Alvester Garnett are the band. NPR Music calls this set from Newport "a bright, vibrant show."
3/29 Renee Rosnes at the Village Vanguard Pianist Renee Rosnes (pictured) says when she's onstage at the Village Vanguard, she turns to the left and sees a jazz fan a few feet away, and the same to the right and over her shoulder. The intimacy inspires a beautiful late night set from Renee's quartet. Steve Nelson on vibes, Peter Washington on bass, and Lewis Nash on drums.
