Sophisticated Ladies and Red-Hot Mommas Heartbreakers, man-takers, vamps, tramps, and the girl next door; through the centuries, they’ve all shown up in song. It seems that songwriters are forever trying to decipher the feminine mystique. New Orleans’ Topsy Chapman joins the Jim Cullum Jazz Band to separate the “sophisticated ladies” from the “red-hot mommas.”
*3/10 Women of the Harlem Renaissance In Jazz Age Harlem, the rise of black culture produced talents like Langston Hughes and Duke Ellington. But this ‘Black Renaissance’ wasn’t limited to men. Actress Carol Woods (pictured) joins The Jim Cullum Jazz Band as they introduce the artistic, fascinating women that launched New York’s great social revolution of the 1920s

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm *3/4
Women in Jazz Part 1 Women have been involved with jazz since its inception, but all too often their achievements are not as well-known as those of their male counterparts. Of course we have Billie, Ella, and Sarah, but there are so many more— singers, instrumentalists and composers—that have made a worthy pantheon. Discover some of the early pioneering female jazz musicians like pianists Mary Lou Williams and Lil Hardin, and trumpeter Dolly Jones (pictured).
*3/11 Women in Jazz Part 2 Take a look at prominent female artists of more recent vintage, including the late trombonist Melba Liston, bandleader (and Grammy winner) Maria Schneider, and producer and impresario Cobi Narita.
*3/18 Blues Mama Bessie Smith No blues singer can escape the influence of Bessie Smith (pictured), "The Empress of the Blues". For over 100 years, this legendary, singer has been and continues to be a major influence on singers and instrumentalists of today. She was larger than life, inexhaustibly creative, and undeniably distinctive. Her legacies of songs speak to everybody; she gave the music its raw, regal poignancy—and marketability.
*3/31 Pianist/Vocalist Shirley Horn

Now, songmeister Michael Feinstein leads a trio of vocalists— Adriane Lenox, Catherine Russell and Tracie Thomas—to honor Waters’ classics including Cabin in the Sky, Stormy Weather and His Eye Is on the Sparrow.
*3/26 Karrin Allyson, Sachal Vasandani and Carla Cook Three modern interpreters of song offer distinctive moods at the House of Swing—Karrin Allyson provides a versatile expressiveness; rising star Sachal Vasandani delivers a cool sophistication; and Detroit native Carla Cook (pictured) brings her blues-style.

*3/20 Linda Ronstadt *3/27 Diana Krall Diana Krall (pictured) is arguably the most popular female singer in the jazz world today. Though she originally came onto the scene as a pianist, Krall has since seduced audiences and critics with her warm sensuous vocals. She made her Piano Jazz debut shortly after the release of her first album. On this 2007 session, Krall and McPartland get together for “My Shining Hour,” “Body And Soul,” and “P.S. I Love You.”
