3/7 Carla Bley
NEA Jazz Master Carla Bley is an enormously prolific and influential composer, as well as a creative bandleader and pianist. She was a founding member of the Jazz Composers Guild, which shaped the early days of free jazz with careful composition. She has the rare gift of writing music that is as melodically accessible as it is formally and conceptually challenging.
3/14 Sheryl Bailey
Sheryl Bailey has built the kind of career musicians envy: without any gimmick or pretense, she has established a deep niche as one of the hardest swinging creative guitar players around and she brings the jazz spirit to every project.
3/21 Paul Bley
The recent passing of pianist Paul Bley took the jazz world by surprise, in no small part due to the fact that Bley’s playing still felt so new, fresh, and vital that many of us forgot how long he had been making it! From his roots in bebop, Bley shaped the sound of many players and changed the way jazz musicians approach small group improvisation.
3/28 Shirley Scott
“The Queen of the Organ” may have seemed like an ostentatious nickname, but you won’t find anybody in the jazz world who will question her right to the throne! Shirley Scott’s language came out of bebop and her dancing swing and depth of feeling elevated her trio recordings and collaborations with saxophonists like Eddie Lockjaw Davis and Stanley Turrentine to the level of classics.

Snarky Puppy in Big D
Jazz Night in America meets up with jazz-fusion superstars Snarky Puppy in their hometown of Dallas, Texas. Along with highlights from a live concert at The Prophet Bar, we explore how to hear the “gospel tinge” in the band’s infections grooves.
3/8 Celebrating Betty Carter
In this episode of Jazz Night in America, we hear stories from alumni of “the school of Betty Carter”, an esteemed collection of singers bound together by the thrall of Carter’s titanic influence on jazz. One of the most powerful voices in the American musical tradition, her lasting legacy is celebrated by vocalist Charenee Wade.
3/15 Akua Dixon at the Central Brooklyn Jazz Festival
It’s not as if there were ever clear paths for cello players beyond the European classical tradition, but Akua Dixon made one for herself. As she developed her jazz chops, she also started her own string quartet, featured prominently on her new self-titled album. She also features her crafty arranging for strings over jazz standards and Afro-Latin grooves.
3/22 Jazz Night in Panama!
Jazz Night in America hits Central America, specifically Panama! Pianist Danilo Perez, founder of the Panama Jazz Festival, is our guide as we learn the power of using jazz as a vehicle for social change.

Jay Leonhart
The turning point which propelled musician Jay Leonhart to take up the bass was hearing Ray Brown in 1955. He has since become a superior bassist, a witty lyricist, and a charming singer. On this 2001 Piano Jazz, he performs his composition Blues for Marilyn.
Mark Murphy
Regarded as one of the world’s hippest jazz vocalists, Mark Murphy (1932 – 2015) epitomized the jazz singer. On this 1998 Piano Jazz session, accompanied by bassist Sean Smith and host McPartland, Murphy puts his mark on Detour Ahead.
3/16 Harold Mabern
Harold Mabern is one of New York’s most requested pianists and a staple of Japan’s jazz scene. In this 1991 Piano Jazz, the mainly self-taught musician solos on You Don’t Know What Love Is, then joins McPartland for Ellington’s Squeeze Me.

In honor of Marian’s birthday, guest host Murray Horwitz leads this exposition through some of her most beautiful works, piano pieces that have entered the jazz repertoire and some of her songs which are part of the Great American Songbook.
3/30 Paul Bley
Legendary leader of the jazz avant-garde, pianist Paul Bley (1932 – 2015) cultivated his own musical vision and influenced a generation of performers. From Piano Jazz in 2000, Bley performs original motifs and collaborates on a duet with McPartland.
