Abdullah Ibrahim
A legend in the New York jazz world, tenor saxophonist Ralph Lalama has been a featured member in the big bands of Woody Herman and Thad Jones, the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, and the Carnegie Hall Jazz Band. In his small group work, he blasts through a gruff and swinging approach to hard bop that speaks the language of jazz without resting in cliché. One of the most prominent African jazz musicians, pianist Abdullah Ibrahim (previously named Dollar Brand) was mentored by Duke Ellington, and fused the approach of Duke and Monk with the sensibilities of free jazz and South African choral and gospel music. He is currently going strong in his fifth decade of music-making, and continues to make music that is challenging and spiritually vibrant.
3/19 Barbara Donald
One of the most commanding of the avant-garde trumpeters, Barbara Donald came to prominence in the 1960’s, when her fiery solos and powerful sound combined with her then-husband Sonny Simmons to produce some pivotal records. She released several fine albums as a leader in the 1980s before health problems caused her to slow down, but her voice and contribution is one that deserves far greater recognition.
3/26
Calvin Keys
A Bay Area treasure, Calvin Keys is a world class jazz guitarist who has been taking swing to new levels for over four decades. We’ll listen to his wonderful albums as a leader as well as his work as a sideman with masters like Ahmad Jamal.

Composer and arranger Gil Goldstein came to the piano by way of the accordion, which he has rediscovered and added to the jazz lexicon. In this 2001 Piano Jazz session, Goldstein solos on his own City Lights. McPartland accompanies him as he plays accordion for a few tunes, including Waltz for Debbie.

Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson
For more than 40 years, vocalist Rosemary Clooney’s simple and exquisite singing style defined her career. Her dynamic career also included movie roles and a star turn in her own television show. She will be remembered as one of the finest jazz-based vocalists. A treasured jazz pianist, radio host of NPR’s Piano Jazz, and educator, Marian McPartland has done as much as anyone to spread the word about jazz and to share its beauty with the general public. As a composer, her works such as In the Days of Our Love have enriched the jazz repetoire. After being brutally beaten by police at age 21, Powell spent the rest of his short life fighting mental illness, until his death in 1966. His music revealed his constant state of struggle. Bud Powell created a ferocious body of music that shattered the limits of bebop and influenced all that followed him. The late Afro-Cuban jazz giant Tito Puente, “El Rey,” was the king of the timbales and the mambo, and a recipient of the Presidential Arts Medal. This tribute probes the source of that energy and uncovers the secrets to Puente’s prolific and creative life. “Looks like he’s levitating when he’s playing” Host Nancy Wilson details the “whole body experience” and the incredibly palette of colors that vibes master Bobby Hutcherson brought to his art.
