John Tchicai
A promising star of jazz piano in the 60s and 70s, Albert Dailey brought a rich and complex post-bop sound to the bands of Stan Getz, Dexter Gordon & Art Blakey. His early death in the 80s cut short a great career, and most of his music remains outrageously out of print today. One of the more challenging and rewarding projects of the great bassist Charlie Haden, this large ensemble played music that celebrated the power of protest against political injustice and explored the musical bonds that can hold improvisers together through chaos. A master of jazz piano in the tradition of Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk, Barry Harris is one of the last remaining giants of the 1950s. His delicate touch and deep understanding of bebop harmony elevated the bands of Cannonball Adderley, Hank Mobley, and others, and his indefatigable work as a teacher has inspired new generations to keep the flames burning. A truly original voice of the alto saxophone, John Tchicai brought much-needed intelligence and warmth to the free jazz movement of the 1960s through his work with the New York Art Quartet. Tchicai kept touring and constantly shifting and evolving until his death in 2012.

3/19 DIVA! For every Count Basie there is often a forgotten female big band leader, overdue for recognition. Jazz Night in America remedies this by commemorating the DIVA Jazz Orchestra, and The International Sweethearts of Rhythm. Christian McBride, sits down with one of the original Sweethearts, Roz Cron, now 93 years old, in a heartwarming conversation.

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Thursday at 9 pm 3/7
Women in Jazz Part 1 in Celebration of International Women’s Day (3/8) Women have been involved with jazz since its inception, but all too often their achievements are not as well-known as those of their male counterparts. Of course we have Billie, Ella, and Sarah, but there are so many more—singers, instrumentalists and composers—that have made a worthy pantheon. Some early pioneering female jazz musicians like pianists Mary Lou Williams and Lil Hardin, and trumpeter Dolly Jones are featured.

Trombonist/Arranger Melba Liston
Part 1 of NPR’s Jazz Profiles series on the role of women in jazz looked back on the early pioneering female jazz musicians. In this second part, the focus is on prominent female artists of more recent vintage, including the late trombonist Melba Liston, bandleader (and Grammy winner) Maria Schneider, and producer and impresario Cobi Narita. A treasured jazz pianist, radio host of NPR’s Piano Jazz, and educator, Marian McPartland has done as much as anyone to spread the word about jazz and to share its beauty with the general public. As a composer, her works such as In the Days of Our Love have enriched the jazz repetoire. Melba Liston (1926-1999) made her mark as one of the few women to succeed as a jazz instrumentalist, composer, and arranger. A trombonist in the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s, she played in big bands and led her own group in the ‘70s and ‘80s. As an accomplished arranger, she brought musical life to the songs of artists as diverse as Billie Holiday, Gloria Lynne, Art Blakey, Milt Jackson, and even Marvin Gaye. And her musical collaboration with pianist Randy Weston for more than thirty years produced such critically acclaimed albums as The Spirits of Our Ancestors and Volcano Blues.
