Inside On Air
On The Cover May 2010—The Twilight Zone In 1957 Rod Serling (pictured) created the Twilight Zone series and wrote 92 of the 156 episodes that CBS aired between 1959 and 1964. Besides Serling, the Twilight Zone was a showcase for writers of the fantasy and science fiction genres; Charles Beaumont, Richard Matheson, Reginald Rose, Harlan Ellison and Ray Bradbury to name a few. The series featured established stars such as Ida Lupino, Cliff Robertson, Mickey Rooney, Lee Marvin and Buster Keaton. Actors on their way up also made a stop in Twilight Zone; Martin Landau, Ron Howard, Jack Klugman, Leonard Nimoy, William Shatner and Robert Redford. A testament to the popularity of the original Twilight Zone …is that there were two revivals of the series; on CBS in 1985 and on the UPN network in 2002. There have been comic books, graphic novels, radio shows, and theatrical productions based on the Twilight Zone. The original series is still in syndication. You can watch the original Twilight Zone episodes on KCSM without commercial interruption every Wednesday night at 8:00pm.

Dear KCSM Members, We have been doing some “Spring Cleaning” here at KCSM. We are almost done with supporting spring classes, and have brought you some new programs on the television station. The Radio station is preparing for our spring fundraising drive. Construction on campus is now focused on the new Campus Center building, and many of the fences around the campus have been removed. As we head into the new fiscal year (July) we continue to bring you the programming and service you want and need, while we minimize or eliminate others, thus reducing our financial needs. Many companies have become web based, taking orders, replying to customer concerns, and providing additional services. We know not all of you are comfortable with the web and we will still be here via phone and mail to work with you, but there are systems we can put in place to help us help you more efficiently. We will be asking you to, if possible, contact us and support us over the web.
We are also trying to be “greener”. If you do not want to continue to get the “On-Air” guide, you may opt out of this mailing. You may also opt in to email updates about programming. We promise not to spam you! If we don’t have your email, we will send you postal mail when it your time to renew. The only other postal mail that you will receive will be if there is a special event, or a special need of the station. In television, we have reduced our staff and continue to bring you our theme night programming. The federally mandated digital transition is done and we are multicasting programming for the Bay Area. The CSM students learning broadcasting have produced a show, “The Bay Today” with topics about the peninsula. In addition we have signed and agreement to work with Sezmi TV to give you another way to receive TV signals.
In Radio, we have been working feverishly to digitize the entire library and to add tools for the staff that make it easier to make the great programming you have come to love. This includes the ability to have a playlist that is live and can display in your RDS capable radio. Technically we have improved the capabilities of the systems and there will be new transmission line installed as well. You will see some of these changes soon. Most important to us is that we hear from you about how we are doing. Don’t hesitate to let us know by calling or emailing us!
Sincerely,
Marilyn Lawrence General Manager

Yes You May! By Claire Greene Pledge Drive Producer
Spring has sprung at Jazz 91 and we’ve got great music to go along with all the colors and energy of this sweetly scented season. We began with Jazz Appreciation Month in April and now we’re moving into May and some serious fund drive fun. The last fund drive of our fiscal year starts on May 4th and we’re working on lots of good ideas to get you excited about becoming members and contributing to the station. We’ve got a great line-up of program specials in the works that covers a lot of jazz ground. They run the gambit from celebrating the 91st anniversary of the keeper of the Purple Grotto, Al “Jazzbo” Collins; Stevie Wonder’s 60th birthday; specials on great women in jazz like Nina, Billie, Ella and Marylou Williams; to the 100th anniversary of Artie Shaw. Like I said, we’re looking to cover a lot of ground and there’s more in the line-up that we’ll just keep as a surprise for now. pictured: Kathleen Lawton with the Jazz Oasis T-shirt
So the programming end of the membership drive is coming together and we’re working on some interesting thank you gifts so please tell all your friends to tune in and check it out. Because this is the last drive of our fiscal year we get to end it as soon as we reach our goal. We estimate that to be around $300,000. Right now the drive is scheduled to run May 4 – 21 but if we can get to the goal earlier than the 21st, we’ll stop. Wouldn’t that be great?! So stay tuned, get psyched, pledge in advance at www.kcsm.org and call all your friends and tell them to join in the fun and when they ask you, “May I call in now and join?” You can answer them with a resounding, “Yes you may!” Thanks for spreading the word and for all you do to keep Jazz 91 alive and well!

Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

Organist Jimmy Smith
A critic once described organist Jimmy Smith (pictured) as an "excitement merchant" creating a lush, soul-stirring sound that brings audiences to their feet. This tribute explores Smith's early days in Philadelphia and shows how he brought the Hammond organ to the forefront of jazz. We'll also explore his work with trios and big bands, and his work with jazz greats such as Wes Montgomery and Oliver Nelson. Interviewees include Jimmy Smith, Shirley Scott, Mark Whitfield and Kenny Burrell.

5/17 Vocalist Al Hibbler 5/24 Trumpeter/Vocalist Doc Cheatham Doc Cheatham (pictured) was a part of virtually all of jazz's history from his own early groups in the mid 1920s to the McKinney Cotton Pickers and Cab Calloway's band in the 30s, and on into the 70s with numerous other bands. Late in life, Doc emerged from his role as an ensemble player and blossomed into an expressive soloist in small group settings. His articulation and clarity on the trumpet were the pillars of his style.
