As the suite takes us through 24 hours on the water, beautiful seascapes by Shetland Island painter Ruth Brownlee are projected on a screen behind the band.
5/19 Patrick Cornelius While We’re Still Young at Berklee College of Music, Boston As saxophonist Cornelius was reading A. A. Milne poems to his very young children, he imagined melodies, then wrote and orchestrated them for an octet. Patrick introduces each movement with a verse.
5/26 Ray Anderson’s Pocket Brass with Sweet Chicago Suite at the Newport Jazz Festival The trombonist and his four-piece New Orleans style band summon Chicago in the 1960s, the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), the legendary Maxwell Street flea market, Operation Breadbasket and People United to Save Humanity (PUSH).

Join us to honor these Jazz Masters: Jack DeJohnette, Von Freeman, Charlie Haden, Sheila Jordan and Jimmy Owens.
5/20 Chick Corea The boundless creative spirit of pianist Chick Corea spins from jazz to classical to the avant garde. Musicians of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra expand the Corea songbook with their own arrangements. Chick Corea joins them on acoustic piano for Matrix, Crystal Silence and Tones for Joan’s Bones.
5/27 God’s Trombones “The trombone comes the closest to the human voice with its bent pitches, scoops, and smears, and that very human quality is evident in everything that James Weldon Johnson wrote,” says JALC Orchestra trombonist Chris Crenshaw. Crenshaw draws on his gospel roots to connect secular music to poetry in this sprawling suite based on the Johnson poem.
