And May is Asian History Month! Celebrate every Sunday this month at 8am on “I’m Talkin’ Jazz”! .

THE ANNALS OF JAZZ WITH RICHARD HADLOCK Sundays at 7 pm

The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of "The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

Johnny Smith

Johnny Smith was a cool-toned guitarist with phenomenal technique and a completely original language of eighth note based lines. His collaboration with Stan Getz on “Moonlight In Vermont” scored a hit in 1952, and he has remained a favorite among guitar players.

Tete Monteliu

Catalan pianist Monteliu has played with all of the major horn players and his solos and trio work show a mastery of bebop mixed with humor and inventive phrasing.

5/16 Ellery Eskelin

Tenor saxophonist Eskelin has a broad and warm sound and an approach to the horn that keeps his projects fresh and forward-leaning. An individual voice on the saxophone is a rare and special thing in this day and age!

5/23 Alice Coltrane

Before Alice Coltrane (formerly Mcleod) rose to prominence playing in her husband John’s late-period ensembles, she established herself as a unique voice on the piano and harp. After his passing, she continued to record and perform a distinctive take on jazz of the 60’s.

A distinctive pianist, drummer, and guru of creative music, Art Lande has been mentoring and educating young musicians, which has had a huge effect on the landscape of jazz. His music is deeply melodic, intelligent, and full of left turns.

This talented young Nuyorican composer brings together afro-latin traditions and his JALCO jazz pedigree to pay tribute to his family and the community that raised him.

5/10 50 Years Of Monday Nights At The Vanguard: The Thad Jones-Mel Lewis Orchestra

Trumpeter/composer/arranger Thad Jones and drummer Mel Lewis found themselves with a book of big band music—and no band to perform it. So they handpicked some of NY’s top talent across age/color lines, becoming the most influential big band of the last 50 years.

5/17 Catherine Russell at Jazz at Lincoln Center

Catherine Russell remembers her late mother, singer Carline Ray, in a performance honoring the vocal jazz trio tradition and shares stories of her mother’s journey in jazz in the 1940s.

5/24 Dew Drop Jazz Hall with Leroy Jones

Leroy is known in the Big Easy as the “Keeper of the Flame” for keeping New Orleans traditions foremost in his playing and his personal character. He brings his septet to the historic Dew Drop Jazz Hall in Mandeville, LA for a special Big Easy Jazz Night in America.

This episode of Jazz Night in America splits the hour with two concerts with two takes on jazz-harp: Brandee Younger, the harpist exploring the textual modal defined by Dorothy Ashby and John Coltrane, and the Columbian-born folkloric virtuoso Edmar Castañeda.

Jim Ferguson

Bassist and vocalist Jim Ferguson got his start in South Carolina, when he picked up the bass late in high school and learned to play on the job before taking formal lessons. On this Piano Jazz from 2001, Ferguson joins host McPartland to perform While We’re Young and McPartland’s There’ll Be Other Times.

5/11 Tania Maria

Born in Brazil to a musical family, pianist and vocalist Tania Maria was leading her own group of professional musicians by the time she was thirteen. On this 1994 Piano Jazz, Maria performs her own composition Carona then solos on Ta’ Tudo Certo.

5/18 Richard Sudhalter (Tribute to Artie Shaw)

Cornetist and jazz historian Richard Sudhalter (1938 – 2008) joined McPartland in 2002, to talk about Artie Shaw (1910 – 2004). Shaw was known for his unparalleled virtuosity and as a successful bandleader with a limitless imagination. Piano Jazz honors Shaw with selections including Love of My Life and Any Old Time.

5/25 Dena DeRose

Singer and pianist Dena DeRose has performed at some of the most renowned venues in the world, from The Blue Note in New York to Swing Hall in Japan. She teaches at the Jazz Institute of the University for Music and Performing Arts in Austria, and continues to perform worldwide. She was McPartland’s guest in this 2001 session and opened the show with If I Should Lose You and McPartland joins for I’m Old Fashioned.

Natalie Cressman Quintet

Part 2 of the Natalie Cressman Quintet’s tribute to legendary composer, arranger and trombonist Melba Liston, recorded at the Joe Henderson Lab in the SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco, on March 3rd, 2016. With Erik Jekabson, Colin Hogan, Tommy Folen and Eric Garland.

5/12 Itamar Borochov

New York based trumpeter and composer Itamar Borochov brought his unique sound to the California Jazz Conservatory on February 12th, 2016. With Jay Sawyer, Justin Carney and Maya Kronfeld who performs with her trio this Saturday May 14th, as part of KCSM’s In The Moment Concert Series, at Musically Minded Academy in Oakland.

5/19 Michael Blake

Tenor saxophonist Michael Blake, a mainstay of the New York Jazz Scene for the past three decades, made his Bay Area debut as a leader, on March 13th, 2016, at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley. With Frank Kimbrough, Ben Allison and Rudy Royston.

“Piano Flamenco Explorations,” with pianist Alex Conde, percussionist Shahin Gorgani, and bassist Matt Baker, recorded on January 29th, 2016 at the Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland.
