HAVE YOU HEARD WITH PATRICK WOLFF MONDAY AT 9 PM 5/6

Lorraine Geller From her start with the Sweethearts Of Rhythm through the superb albums she co-led with her husband saxophonist Herb Geller, pianist Lorraine Geller was a rising star of bebop in the 1950s. A tragically early death cut short what would have been a huge contribution to jazz, but the sparkle and invention of her playing has stood the test of time.

5/13 Connie Crothers A Bay Area native, pianist Connie Crothers made her mark on the NY scene while studying extensively with pianist and theorist Lennie Tristano. After Tristano’s death, she remained one of the great missionaries of his vision, bending the rules of harmony and phrase until her death in August of 2016.

5/20 Nicole Mitchell Award winning flutist Nicole Mitchell is one of the hubs of the creative modern jazz scene of Chicago. She has made her mark as a community leader as the first female president of the AACM, as an instrumentalist with a unique voice, and as a composer of complex and relevant new music.

JAZZ NIGHT IN AMERICA WITH CHRISTIAN MCBRIDE TUEsDAY AT 9 PM 5/7

Women to Watch On this week’s Jazz Night in America, we hear from three young artists on what fuels their process: alto saxophonist Lakecia Benjamin, tenor saxophonist María Grand, and vocalist/flutist Melanie Charles.

5/14 Catherine Russell at Jazz at Lincoln Center Catherine Russell remembers her late mother, singer Carline Ray, in a performance honoring the vocal jazz trio tradition, and shares stories of her mother’s journey in jazz coming up in the 1940s as a black woman.

5/21 Joe Lovano Back in his Hometown Jazz Night in America heads to Cleveland where we catch up with Joe Lovano, featuring highlights from two, sold-out nights at The Bop Stop at the Music Settlement where Lovano features his family, old classmates and locals who’ve been making music in Cleveland for years.

5/28 Big Ears Jazz Night in America celebrates the 50th anniversary of the iconic European record label ECM at one of the premiere music events in America, the Big Ears Festival in Knoxville, Tennessee, featuring NEA Jazz Master and pianist Carla Bley, Israeli trumpeter Avishai Cohen, and the Swiss pianist Nik Bärtsch.

JAZZ 91 PREVIEW

PIANO JAZZ WITH MARIAN MCPARTLAND WEDNEsDAY AT 9 PM

5/1

Shirley Horn On this 1989 Piano Jazz, Horn brings her unmistakable contralto, as well as her unique accompaniment to a set of standards including But Beautiful, It Never Entered My Mind and For All We Know.

5/8

Mary Lou Williams Mary Lou Williams was the guest on the very first Piano Jazz session ever, recorded in 1978 with Williams and bassist Ronnie Boykins. Even more than 40 years later, it’s a marvel to hear a seasoned musician like McPartland improvise the successful formula for Piano Jazz during the program’s first session.

5/15 Bud Shank On this 2006 Piano Jazz, saxophonist Bud Shank and host McPartland are joined by bassist Martin Wind and drummer Tim Horner to form a tight, swinging quartet.

5/22 Rosemary Clooney On this 1992 Piano Jazz session, Clooney brings her smooth vocals to a set of standards from America’s great songwriters: George and Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, Billy Strayhorn, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen and more.

5/29 Ahmad Jamal On this 1985 Piano Jazz, Jamal reprises two classics in duets with McPartland: Poinciana and But Not For Me. Jamal solos on Ellington’s Come Sunday, and he and McPartland close the program with a final duet on Dizzy Gillespie’s Woody ‘N’ You.

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON THURsDAY AT 9 PM 5/2

Duke Ellington: The Composer, Part 1 Perhaps the most prolific of America’s composers, Ellington (1899-1974) left a legacy of over a thousand compositions. Explore how the blues figured prominently in his creations, and look into the genesis of favorite Ellington compositions.

5/9

Duke Ellington: The Composer, Part 2 Pianist/composer Billy Strayhorn and Ellington maintained a long and prolific writing partnership, collaborating in an uncanny, almost telepathic fashion. Explore how Ellington/Strayhorn’s compositional ideas pre-dated the bebop movement of the ‘40s.

5/16 Duke Ellington: The Songwriter Explore the songwriting side of Ellington, with insightful commentary from Ellington singers Joe Williams, Joya Sherrill, and Herb Jeffries, along with thoughts from composer and educator Gunther Schuller and impresario George Wein.

5/23 Duke Ellington: On Film & On Stage Ellington’s efforts for film and the stage were integral to his unrelenting pursuit of musical innovation, and they remain vital elements in his tremendous legacy as a composer.

5/30 Duke Ellington: The Pianist Follow Ellington’s piano-playing style, influences, and developments, from his earliest composition (“Soda Fountain Rag,” written when he was 15), to his extended suites and “sacred concerts” of his later years.
