Dear KCSM Members, Last month I spoke to you about changes, and how they are an opportunity for improvement. As we move into new programming opportunities we have been listening to you, our viewers, so many of the programming changes you will see this month are a reflection of your viewing preferences.
We are rearranging our weekday programming into blocks. You will notice we start the day at midnight with “overnight repeats”. For those that work swing shift, or missed a show during prime time, this is a good opportunity to watch a prime time show, or set your DVR to tape them for future viewing. The overnight is followed at 6 AM with Morning Cup of Jazz, a one hour simulcast of our Jazz station with additional weather and traffic information to help get your morning started and plan your morning commute. Then from 7 to 9 AM we follow with an exercise block. Most people like to exercise before the go to work, or after the kids are off to school, so this block was designed with you in mind. Right after that we go into our telecourse block for our distance learning students. By the way, if you are not familiar with telecourses, you don’t have to be a student to watch them. They are awesome, very educational and very entertaining. The afternoon gets started with a cooking block, followed by arts and crafts, and then children’s programming for the kids that are coming home from school. This block is intended to be educational in nature so children can learn and be entertained while mom and dad prepare dinner.
The after-dinner fare includes our current affairs programming, with world news, commentary, local newsmakers and business news, designed to get you up to speed on what has been going on in the world and your neighborhood while you were at work. The current affairs block is followed with soft and entertaining programs that will lead you into prime time. We will talk about prime time in the future, and I think you will like what we have in store for you in that department. Weekends remain mainly untouched for now, but we will like to know your thoughts about our programming schedule in general and weekends specifically, as we continue to adjust our programming strategy to accommodate to your interests and viewing habits.
Don’t forget to sign up to follow us on Twitter, as many of these changes will be posted there, as well as on our web site. You can always write to me at dante@kcsm.net to let me know your thoughts about our programs and programming schedule. Stay tuned (pun intended), and thanks for your continuous support. Sincerely,
Dante Betteo Programming Development Manager

Tattooed Under Fire A unique, intimate, portrait of Iraq-bound and returning US soldiers as they go under the tattoo needle: openly professing their pride, sharing their secrets and confessing their fears. The tattoos cross lines of gender, class, and political affinity revealing the inner lives of young men and women as they live through the horrors of the Iraq war. Each soldier’s story is an evocative, poignant, and highly personal look at the human and cultural cost of war. Wednesday, November 11 at 10:30 pm
The Soviet Story This film tells the story of the Soviet regime, and how the Soviet Union helped Nazi Germany instigate the Holocaust. This is a story of Allied power, which helped the Nazis to fight Jews and which slaughtered its own people on an industrial scale. Assisted by the West, this power triumphed on May 9th, 1945. Its crimes were made taboo, and the complete story of Europe's most murderous regime has never been told. Until now... Thursday, November 26 at 10:30 pm
The Valley That Changed The World The program explores historic events leading up to 1859 and the Drake oil well, the oil companies that sprang out of the boom, the developments of towns like Oil City, Franklin, and Titusville, and the people and families instrumental in the industry. Actor Wendell Pierce to Host Jazz at Lincoln Center Radio Jazz at Lincoln Center has tapped actor Wendell Pierce (pictured) as the new host of its nationally-broadcast series, Jazz at Lincoln Center Radio. Pierce, who has starred in film and television projects including “The Wire,” and HBO’s forthcoming “Tremé,” will host the hour long Peabody Award–winning radio series. “Jazz at Lincoln Center has become a home for me,” says Pierce, who has been guest narrator at Jazz at Lincoln Center concerts. “I’ve always admired the amount of sweat and soul they put into every performance. I’m honored to share a piece of the music.” photo credit: frank stewart
Jazz at Lincoln Center Radio is broadcast weekly to over 240 public radio affiliates nationwide through the Jazz Satellite Network/WFMT. The radio show – a collaboration between Jazz at Lincoln Center and Murray Street Productions under the direction of Senior Producer Steve Rathe - debuted in 1994 with founding host Ed Bradley, whose voice was the signature of each show until 2006. Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Artistic Director Wynton Marsalis, who succeeded Bradley in hosting duties from 2006-2009, is delighted that Pierce has joined the show. “Wendell understands the art of swing,” Marsalis says. “He grew up in New Orleans, so that rhythm is in his heart and in his words.” Jazz at Lincoln Center Radio broadcasts performances captured live at Frederick P. Rose Hall, home of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and this season’s episodes feature an array of artists including the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, Ravi Coltrane, Marcus Roberts, Dianne Reeves, Joe Lovano and many more. You can hear Jazz at Lincoln Center Radio every Tuesday night at 9pm on KCSM Radio, 91.1fm and www.kcsm.org

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm
11/2 Louis Jordan Louis Jordan (pictured) was among the first black entertainers to be successful in a wider pop market. Jordan and his Tympany Five influenced bands like Bill Haley and the Comets — his music is often cited as one of the roots of rock and roll. He was also underrated as a jazz musician, both a fine clarinetist and alto saxophonist. His music is guaranteed to put a smile on the faces of all who hear him.
11/9 Composer/Pianist/Singer/Actor/Bandleader Hoagy Carmichael 11/16 Saxophonist Zoot Sims 11/23 Vocalist Sarah Vaughan Musicians and audiences alike marveled at the ease with which Sarah Vaughan (pictured) moved up and down her four-octave range, turning even the most mundane songs into operatic riffs. Her sound possessed a full-bodied purity, with an approach not unlike an instrumentalist. Early in her career, Sassy cut her teeth on bebop, performing with Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie, and Charlie Parker. She also ventured into the pop world, recording hits such as Broken-hearted Melody, Day-O, and Send in the Clowns.

PIANO JAZZ WITH MARIAN MCPARTLAND Wednesday at 9 pm
11/4 Remembering Blossom Dearie Singer, pianist and songwriter Blossom Dearie (pictured) had one of the most distinctive voices in jazz. She paired that delicate, childlike delivery with swinging piano playing, decorating such humorous tunes as I'm Shadowing You and My New Celebrity Is You. On this program from 1985, Dearie performs her hits and joins McPartland for a piano duet of Everything I've Got Is Yours.
11/11 Pianist Aaron Diehl 11/18 Randy Brecker with guest host Bill Charlap Trumpeter Randy Brecker (pictured) has been a tireless explorer of all kinds of musical genres, from funk to Brazilian to mainstream jazz. Brecker brought along his group to this Piano Jazz where he joins guest host Bill Charlap and performs some of his own tunes including There's a Mingus A Monk Us, Skunk Funk and Moontide. Charlap joins the group for All the Things You Are.
