RIVERWALK JAZZ Sunday at 6 pm
11/6 Swinging at the Pearl: Catherine Russell, Dick Hyman & The Jim Cullum Jazz Band 11/13 Gennett Records: The Little Studio That Could Old rugs hung from the ceilings of the little ragtag studio and the walls were stuffed with straw to dampen the sound from the trains passing by. Some of the most important jazz recordings in American musical history were recorded in the back of the Starr piano factory (pictured). The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and guests perform the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Bix and His Gang and more from Starr-Gennett Records.
11/20 ‘Ride, Red, Ride’: New Orleans Trumpeter Henry ‘Red’ Allen Jr.
New Orleans trumpeter Henry ‘Red’ Allen Jr. (pictured) made a name for himself on the 1930s’ New York jazz scene as a hot trumpet soloist, singer, and entertainer. He later went on to hold a long residency as bandleader at Manhattan’s famed Metropole Café in Times Square. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and special guests tell the story and perform tunes from Allen’s long career.

Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm
11/7 Trumpeter Doc Cheatam
Doc Cheatham (pictured) was a part of virtually all of jazz's history from his own early groups in the mid 1920s to the McKinney Cotton Pickers and Cab Calloway's band in the 30s, and on into the 70s with numerous other bands. Late in life, Doc emerged from his role as an ensemble player and blossomed into an expressive soloist in small group settings. His articulation and clarity on the trumpet were the pillars of his style.
11/14 Pianist Ellis Larkins 11/21 Clarinetist/Bandleader Artie Shaw 11/28 Vocalist Anita O'Day Singer Anita O'Day (pictured) has experienced both the "high times and hard times"—as her autobiography is so aptly titled - of a jazz singer. In the mid-'40s she was a celebrated vocalist with the Stan Kenton and Gene Krupa orchestras. In the mid-'50s, she had a string of highly regarded albums. Drug addiction interfered with her potential for super-stardom, yet she still had a profound impact in jazz with her exceptional range at improvisation and her skill at interpreting a lyric.
JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm
11/1 The Latin Infusion: Airto and Edmar Castaneda
Harp virtuoso Edmar Castaneda (pictured) draws from jazz, Afro-Cuban and Colombian joropo traditions to weave enchantment on the Rose Hall stage. Famed Brazilian percussionist Airto Morera, who can make music on almost anything, leads our jazz Carnivale – with Toninho Horta (guitar), Mark Egan (bass) and Kenny Werner (piano).
11/8 Jazz and Art II 11/15 Regina Carter with Reverse Thread, and Stefon Harris with Blackout What do the violin, the kora, the accordion, the vibraphone and the vocoder have in common? Innovative jazz fiddler Regina Carter (pictured) and vibraphonist Stefon Harris bring them all out to create a very contemporary sound at Dizzy’s club. With kora player Yacouba Sissoko and accordionist Will Holshouser, Carter explores the music of Africa – from Ugandan Jewish songs to traditional music of Madagascar and Mali. Harris and his band Blackout find inspiration in the funk and soul sounds of the 70s.
11/22 Music of the Modern Jazz Quartet 11/29 John Coltrane – The Breakthrough: Giant Steps

PIANO JAZZ WITH MARIAN MCPARTLAND Wednesday at 9 pm
11/2 Julian Lage 11/9 Joanne Brackeen Virtuoso pianist and master composer Joanne Brackeen has been called “the Picasso of jazz piano.” In her hands, the history of jazz is created and recreated as she floats seamlessly between traditional and free styles. Like McPartland, Brackeen has been a trailblazer for women in jazz. The two friends get together on McPartland’s Ambiance and Coltrane’s Giant Steps.
11/16 John Lewis 11/23 Albert Dailey In his short life Albert Dailey (pictured) was an underrated yet hotly sought after pianist. His career included work with Woody Herman, Dexter Gordon, Stan Getz, Art Blakey, Sarah Vaughan, Charles Mingus, Archie Shepp, and Freddie Hubbard. On this 1983 program, he performs his Dailey Double and duets with McPartland on Just One of Those Things.
11/30 Herbie Hancock
JAZZSET WITH DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER Thursday at 9 pm
11/3 NEA Jazz Master Toots Thielemans and Kenny Werner at the Kennedy Center
White-thatched with black-rimmed specs, even Toots' (pictured) hands are mostly still as he holds the harmonica to his lips and the mic to his harmonica. The music seems to come from his heart. He and pianist Werner are so attuned that "...it was sometimes hard to tell if Werner anticipated what tensions to play behind Thielemans, or if Thielemans found the notes that belonged where Werner was headed," writes the Bostonjazzblog of a show from the same 2011 tour.
11/10 The Second Set: Roy Hargrove Quintet at the Village Vanguard 11/17 Charles Lloyd and Sangam at the Newport Jazz Festival Writing from Newport in The New York Times, Ben Ratliff says, "Sangam, the trio of the saxophonist Charles Lloyd (pictured), the percussionist Zakir Hussain and the drummer Eric Harland, played and sang—for Mr. Hussain, there's sometimes no difference—through a meditative set of Indian music and free improvisation . . . [It] was one of the best stretches of the day.
