JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm

11/5 Thelonious Monk: 'Thelonious Himself' The sound of Thelonius Monk (pictured) is one of the most recognizable in modern jazz. By the "plunk" or "thunk" of a single chord, his piano and compositions are unmistakable. An original on and off the bandstand, he was the launch pad of bebop, and also created a body of work in its own orbit. This show celebrates Monk's lasting contributions, with help from his collaborators and admirers including drummer Max Roach, producer Orrin Keepnews, and writer Stanley Crouch.

11/12 Buddy Collette: 'Man of Many Parts' 11/19 Red Norvo: 'Mr. Swing' Red Norvo (pictured) is the lesser known of the two early pioneers of the vibraphone in jazz (the other is Lionel Hampton). This show looks at the multi-faceted musical career of Norvo, from his earliest experiments with avantgarde jazz, to his big bands with wife/singer Mildred Bailey, to his critically acclaimed trio with bassist Charles Mingus and guitarist Tal Farlow.

11/26 Sun Ra: 'Cosmic Swing'

JAZZ AT LINCOLN CENTER WITH WENDELL PIERCE Tuesday at 9 pm

11/6 Seventy Years of Blue Note: Hard Bop and Beyond 11/13 Catherine Russell / Nancy Wilson Two vocalists defy category – Catherine Russell, who nurtured a career as a backup singer with Al Green, Michael Feinstein and David Bowie, and has cultivated her own strong solo voice and a world of influence to jazz. Nancy Wilson, the perennial song stylist whose five-decade career started with Cannonball Adderley, seamlessly crossed the jazz-blues-pop divide.

11/20 The Music of Mary Lou Williams 11/27 Sweet Honey in the Rock Grammy winning a-cappella ensemble Sweet Honey in the Rock (pictured) shines a new light on the work of Odetta, Abbey Lincoln and Nina Simone – and marks their own 30-year anniversary with something new: a backing trio.

Happy Thanksgiving Louis Armstrong used to sign his letters, Red Beans and Ricely Yours and gave his jazz compositions titles like Struttin’ with Some Barbecue and Cornet Chop Suey. We know that New Orleans’ own Louis Armstrong took his red beans and rice seriously. When Louis and his wife-to-be Lucille were courting, he asked her if she could cook his favorite dish. Lucille just laughed. A bit later in their relationship, she realized it was no joke and promised Louis she’d learn how to make him red beans and rice. The way Armstrong tells it, they sat down to a meal of Lucille’s homecooked ‘red beans’ with her parents—just before he asked her to marry him. Here, at KCSM, we take our food seriously too (have you checked out our pledge drive photos on facebook?) And our Thanksgiving celebration is our best endeavor—everyone brings their favorite dish, and we—literally—have two long tables full of great food. However you choose to celebrate, we wish you and yours a fantastic Thanksgiving Holiday!
