THE ANNALS OF JAZZ WITH RICHARD HADLOCK Sundays at 7 pm

The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of "The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

Jazz 91 Preview

Trumpeter Louis Smith was one of the most bebop-oriented players in the wave of superb jazz musicians from Memphis in the 50s & 60s. With two Blue Note records and a stint in Horace Silver’s quintet he seemed destined for stardom, but chose a life as an educator instead, and was an influential figure in the thriving jazz education community of Michigan.

11/14 Michael Formanek

A consummate inside-out bass player, Formanek made his mark as a sideman with everyone from Dave Burrell to Fred Hersch. He has released albums as a leader for 25 years, and his last three releases show an expansive, rich musical mind in its prime.

11/21 Grant Stewart

Tenor saxophonist Grant Stewart has been playing and recording classic jazz in NY for twenty years. He is celebrated by multiple generations of players for his swing, huge tone, and whip-smart lines. Through years of weekly gigs, he is also is partly responsible for building the identity and scene of Smalls Jazz Club, the current hotbed of new jazz in NY.

11/28 Muhal Richard Abrams

A significant pianist and bandleader, Abrams co-founded the AACM in 1965 and has been on the forefront of free jazz ever since. He has done amazing work not only on the stage, but in presenting adventurous jazz as a legitimate art form to be celebrated, funded, and taught at all levels.

Jazz Night in America visits New Orleans to meet two of the city’s best known legends: singer John Boutte and drummer Shannon Powell. We spend time with each of them at their homes, tracing their NOLA familial roots and exploring why they’ve stayed local.

11/8 The Music of Billy Strayhorn

Jazz Night in America features interviews with Strayhorn family members, his biographer, and rare archival tape of Strayhorn himself in order to peer inside his journey from workingclass Pittsburgh to New York City and the world of elegance and “twelve o’clock tales.”

In the world of Brazilian percussion, few players have shared the stage with Herbie Hancock, Yo-Yo-Ma, Trey Anastasio (Phish), and Sting. Cyro Baptista transcends borders and style, and with more than three decades of wizardry and ingenuity he brings his craft to Jazz at Linocln Center.

Jazz Night in America presents Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society and their latest project entitled Real Enemies, an exploration of real world beliefs, of the present day folklore that we call conspiracy theories.”

11/29 Snarky Puppy in Big D

Jazz Night in America meets up with jazz-fusion superstars Snarky Puppy in their hometown of Dallas, Texas. Featuring highlights from a live concert and an exclusive conversation with bandleader/bassist, Michael League where he breaks down his compositional process.

11/2 Sir Roland Hanna

This 2003 Piano Jazz with guest Sir Roland Hanna (1932 – 2002) was recorded before a live audience at the 2002 Tanglewood Jazz Festival. A subtle and insightful pianist, he was a superb two piano partner, as evidenced when he and McPartland get together for Blues in the Closet. He shows off his skill as a composer with his Portrait of John Lewis.

11/9 Richard Sudhalter

Richard Sudhalter (1938 – 2008) was a top jazz cornetist and a respected critic, author and recording artist. He co-wrote Bix: Man and Legend, which was nominated for a National Book Award, and won a Grammy for his liner notes for Bunny Berigan: Giants of Jazz.

11/16 Nellie Lutcher

Nellie Lutcher (1912 – 2007) started out playing piano at fifteen but soon transitioned to singing. She built a career as a prominent jazz vocalist in the 1940s and 1950s with hits such as Fine Brown Frame. She joined McPartland for Piano Jazz in 1986. Lutcher performs two of her most popular compositions, Hurry on Down and Real Gone Guy.

11/23 Lonnie Liston Smith

Lonnie Liston Smith is one of contemporary music’s most versatile keyboardists and has also worked as a soloist, bandleader, and sideman to all the greats. On this 2002 Piano Jazz, Smith performs What is this Thing Called Love and joins McPartland for C Jam Blues.

11/30 Meredith D’Ambrosio

A sensitive and romantic vocalist and pianist, D’Ambrosio is a champion of the lesserknown songs of famous composers. She is also respected as a visual artist, composer, and teacher. On this 1994 Piano Jazz, D’Ambrosio performs Beware of Spring and Give It Time.

Part 2 of In The Moment’s 10th Anniversary celebration featuring Jan Gabarek, George Coleman, Eric Reed, Guisando Caliente with the late Kenny Drew Jr., Michael O’Neill with Kenny Washington and a solo performance by saxophonist Melissa Aldana recorded at this year’s San Jose Jazz Summer Fest.

Vocalist, composer and arranger Thana Alexa, with the Thana Alexa Project, recorded at the Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland on September 13th, 2016. With Ben Flocks, Eden Ladin, Noam Wisenberg and Peter Kronreif.

11/17 Larry Vuckovich Bay Area All Stars

Part 2 of the Larry Vuckovich Bay Area All Stars with vocalist Jackie Ryan, recorded at The Bach Dancing and Dynamite Society in Half Moon Bay, on November 15th 2015. With Noel Jewkes, Rob Roth, Josh Workman, Hector Lugo, Daniel Moreno, Jeff Chambers, James Gallagher, Carlos Reyes and Awa Sangho.

11/24 Kelly Fasman

Drummer Kelly Fasman and Friends recorded March 26th, 2016 recorded at Musically Minded Academy in Oakland. With bassist Matt Finders, pianist John R. Burr, saxophonist Guido Fazio and guitiarist John Whitney.
