The Jim Cullum Jazz Band salutes the Benny Goodman Sextet, which originally started as a quintet—that was, until Charlie Christian and his electric guitar came along. Included are feature performances by clarinetists Ron Hockett and Allan Vaché, with Harry Allen on sax.

Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm
10/3 Cornetist Nat Adderley
Nat Adderley was a fine trumpet player. But he spent most of his career in the shadow of his older brother, Julian "Cannonball" Adderley. Nat ran the band business and wrote many of their hits. When Cannonball died, Nat carried on, not only with the band, but also with the family tradition of educating the next generation.
10/10 The Village Vanguard 10/17 Organist Jimmy Smith 10/24 Saxophonist Stanley Turrentine 10/31 Vocalist Al Hibbler Hibbler brought many of Duke Ellington's most popular ballads to life during an eight-year stint with the orchestra and earned his place in the jazz arena with a rich, supple baritone. Sightless since birth, he became the first blind performer, even preceding Ray Charles, to achieve real popularity. His southern accent and emotional treatment of songs combined in an idiosyncratic delivery that found success in jazz, R&B and pop markets alike.

10/4 Prohibition and the Jazz Age
Prohibition was intended to stifle vice – but instead, it nourished clubs run by organized crime and created a hot bed for jazz – where “The parties were bigger…the pace was faster…and the morals were looser” (F. Scott Fitzgerald). Ken Burns joins host Wendell Pierce to bring us the sound of the speakeasies. Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton and James P. Johnson are on the menu as Doug Wamble and Vince Giordano join the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

10/5 Toots Thielemans 10/12 Sheila Jordan with guest host Jon Weber Sheila Jordan's unique singing style lights up Piano Jazz with guest host Jon Weber. Jordan reflects on her early inspirations in Detroit and chasing the great Charlie Parker, who later became a close friend. Along with brilliant pianist and collaborator Steve Kuhn, Jordan sets flame to "Hum Drum Blues and "The Touch of Your Lips.
10/19 Randy Brecker with guest host Bill Charlap 10/26 Chuck Leavell Pianist Chuck Leavell has played with the shining stars of rock, country, jazz and pop, including Chuck Berry, Eric Clapton, The Allman Brothers Band and Charles Mingus. Since 1982, he has been keyboardist and general music coordinator for the Rolling Stones. Leavell is also a dedicated environmentalist who maintains a tree farm outside of Macon, GA. He and Marian McPartland discuss their love of the environment and play "Georgia on My Mind.

10/6 2012 NEA Jazz Master Von Freeman, for his 88th birthday
Born October 3, 1923, in Chicago, "Vonski is a founder of the Chicago School of jazz tenor saxophonists, cited by the National Endowment for the Arts. "With his individual sound, at once husky and melodic, he makes every song his own. And he does, at the Green Mill with fellow tenor Ed Petersen, New Year's Eve 2010, on JazzSet.
10/13 Yotam Silberstein at the KC Jazz Club Guitarist Yotam Silberstein from Tel Aviv made a great first impression at the Kennedy Center in the sold-out Ella! concert (as broadcast on JazzSet). Now he is touring worldwide with pianist Monty Alexander. Yotam's friend Roy Assaf on piano is a graduate of Betty Carter's Jazz Ahead training at the Kennedy Center.
