A Huge Thank You to our Volunteers!

From near and far, no matter the weather or traffic, we know we can count on our volunteers to show up in the wee hours of the morning and stay until late in the evening to help us raise the funds necessary to keep our station on the air, and for their dedication we are eternally grateful. We are also immensely thankful for you, our faithful listeners who call to show your support by making a donation. It is each and everyone of you who keeps KCSM going, and for all you do, THANK YOU!

Comings and Goings

Autumn is a comin' and KCSM Jazz91 has some Fond Farewells and New Hellos to make. A wonderful show, Song Travels with Michael Feinstein will end as Michael is beginning new projects. Michael Feinstein will continue to host specials throughout the year through NPR. In its place at 9pm on Monday nights beginning October 5th we'll welcome our newest 'hipster' (that's a compliment in his case, but he does sport a beard!) Patrick Wolff. The show is called, Have You Heard and as Patrick told me, "I like Duke, Pops, and Bird as much as anybody else in these parts, but I take pleasure in exploring the endless avenues and narrow alley ways through the whole world of new jazz...there's new music being made every day!" Check out Have You Heard with Patrick Wolff, Mondays at 9pm!

Kcsm Jazz Record Swap

Boo! We've scheduled our very first Halloween Spectacular KCSM Jazz Record Swap! Come on up to the College of San Mateo on Saturday, October 31st from 10am-5pm in the student center for all things jazz. Its $5 to enter to buy, and you can get a table to sell by signing up on our website www.kcsm.org. It’s our first ever Jazz Record Swap with tours of KCSM right next door! Hope to see you there.

Jazz 91 Preview

have you heard with Patrick wolff Monday at 9 pm 10/5 Kris Davis

An intense and inventive young pianist and composer, Canadian born Kris Davis has released 10 albums and appeared on records with Eric Revis, Tony Malaby, Tom Rainey, and Tyshawn Sorey, and is a recipient of a 2015 Doris Duke Impact award.

10/12 Rich Perry

One of the greatest sidemen of the tenor saxophone, Rich Perry has decades of history with the Maria Schneider Orchestra and the Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, but his careful and elegant style shines equally brightly on his records as a leader.

10/19 Jacques Coursil

Coursil was one of the central figures in the free jazz scene of the late 60’s, contributing his mastery of the trumpet and musical sensitivity to recordings in New York City and Paris, most notably with Sunny Murray. After almost three decades away from the music scene, he has returned, showcasing a new minimal and haunting approach.

10/26 Elmo Hope

A composer and pianist whose and elaborate songs can be found on records with Clifford Brown, Harold Land, and John Coltrane, Elmo Hope fused elements of Monk and Bud Powell into an earthy and challenging style. Hope made a real contribution to the New York and Los Angeles scenes of the 1950’s that is today largely ignored (except by musicians).

JAZZ Night in America with christian mcbride Tuesday at 9 pm

10/6 George Wein Turns 90!

“Impresario,” “jazz fanatic,” “producer,” and “musician” are just a few titles we can give to George Wein. The man who invented the jazz festival turns ninety this month and we’re toasting his legacy with an exclusive interview on his career highlights, featuring Tom Harrell, Bria Skonberg and Scott Robinson at the 2015 Newport Jazz Festival.

10/13 Moran and Monk

Jason Moran defies the constraints of history itself in this celebration of “the first pianist who made me want to be a pianist.” Using archival footage, interviews, and live music, Moran re-imagines the classic “Monk At Town Hall” concert from 1959 to paint a portrait of one of the unique and influential musicians in jazz history.

10/20 Back in the Bronx

Jazz Night in America debuts of new compositions and arrangements by Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra bassist, Carlos Henriquez, who returns home to the Bronx to honor his musical roots at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts.

10/27 The Conversation Continues

Arturo O’Farrill pays tribute to Afro-Cuban music and the collaborations that have helped this music grow and thrive, despite years of political tumult. “The Conversation Continues” continues a conversation started decades ago between Cuban percussionist, Chano Pozo, and trumpeter, Dizzy Gillespie, by bringing together contemporary collaborations between American and Cuban musicians.
