Fall Membership Fund Drive Puts the Emphasis on Fun! By Claire Greene Jazz 91 Fund Drive Producer

Jazz 91’s Fall Membership Drive starts on September 8th and we’re doing our best to make it fun. Times are tough, but if we have the kind of participation/response we got during our Spring membership drive, we WILL be successful!

Pictured: jazz 91 on-air announcer clifford brown, jr.

And congratulations and thank you to those of you who were part of that Spring Drive new membership tsunami. You really made a difference. Since you now receive the KCSM guide, I bet you’ve got a better picture of Jazz 91’s programming grid and are doing some fine tuning of your own. Remember you can always contact us about what you hear and let us know what you think. We’ve also got a blog and some forums going at kcsm.org so get on over there and let her rip! As for fine-tuning the Fall drive, we’re pulling together some great thank you gifts. So far we’ve got a handful of classics from the Blue Note label. Ditto the Prestige label. And by the time you read this, there’ll be many more. Plus, on Sunday, September 13th at 10am, we’ll celebrate the 90th anniversary of the birth of the great Nat “King” Cole. Yeah, get your kicks at 91.1fm! In addition to music, we’ll have some fun logo items in the offering: like our go green grocery sack that shrinks down into a fist size duffel bag, jazzy swag (like our long sleeve and short sleeve T-shirts) and nifty trinkets. Best of all, they’ll all make it to your doorstep by the holidays, so get ready to make your list and check it twice. And, speaking of holidays, we’ll be having a Rosh Hashanah special on Friday, September 18th at 2pm to usher in the Jewish New Year of 5,770. It’s become a much-loved tradition here at KCSM. All right, here we go! Tell your friends near and far. Yes, the best little jazz station in the country is movin’ and groovin’ and with the continued support of our listeners it’ll keep on doin’ just that!

Jazz in Song, The Words

Wednesday at 9 pm

Words give a narrative to the jazz melody and are as important to the instrumentalist as to the jazz singer. Explore the art of interpreting the lyric, and the characteristics of a great lyric.

Pianist, singer, composer and producer Allen Toussaint (pictured) is a legendary musical force on the New Orleans music scene. McPartland asked her friend, the ever-eclectic Elvis Costello, to sit in as guest host for this Piano Jazz session which features Toussaint singing and playing his hit tune Southern Nights and a duet with Costello on the pair's recent collaboration—Ascension Day.

9/14 Jazz in Song, The Singing Instrumentalists Many jazz instrumentalists have stepped into the singer's role—Fats Waller, Nat "King" Cole, Jack Teagarden, and Chet Baker (pictured) to name a few. With their mastery of phrasing, such musicians have transferred their talents into song in distinctive ways.

Pianist/composer Matthew Shipp (pictured) has an intricate and heady approach to his music, with avant-garde impulses that have led him to experiment with free jazz styles, tape loops and even turntable artists. On this Piano Jazz, Shipp settles into one of his favorite environs, the duo format, as he and McPartland explore the outer reaches on Naima and Shipp's own Gamma Ray.

9/28 Oscar Pettiford

Tuesday at 9 pm 9/1

Hilton Ruiz and Cesar Camargo Mariano Two virtuosos seek rhythms south of the United States in their bebop and swing inspired piano styles. The radiant Hilton Ruiz (pictured) who tragically passed away in June of 2006, performs and inspires set from the Afro-Cuban canon. Cesar Camargo Mariano moves listeners with savory compositions and arrangements from Brazil.

What are the jazz standards? How do tunes like Body and Soul, My Funny Valentine, or Autumn Leaves become standards? And what impact did Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald (pictured,) Frank Sinatra, and others have on the making of standards?

9/21 Jazz in Song, The Jazz Standard

Though he lived just 37 years, the jazz world will never forget bassist, composer, and bandleader Oscar Pettiford. He helped define and refine the bass into the melodic, solo instrument we hear today. He also wrote tunes that lay easy on the large resonant bass body. From his birthplace on a Native American reservation in Oklahoma to his death in 1960 in Copenhagen, Pettiford's musical breadth was a match for the distances he'd traveled, finding a home for himself and his music.

Donating via the web during pledge is absolutely the most cost-effective way to support your favorite jazz station – less back-end for us, and faster thank you gift delivery for you! Check us out over the next few weeks…because after our pledge madness is over, we will be revealing a whole new website design to tie in with our new forums and blogs. With your support, we’ll keep the jazz streaming ‘round the world!
