More Music, Less Talk! The Autumn leaves are against my window which means it’s time for our KCSM Fall Fund Drive. This year there’ll be LESS hollering for your dollar and MORE quietly asking you for your financial contribution. So help us tone down the barking by pledging sooner rather than later at KCSM.org. Make your pledge before September 25th, and you’ll be entered into all of our drawings for great raffle prizes including a pair of 3-day arena passes for this year’s Monterey Jazz Festival. We’ll be celebrating the Festival as well as John Coltrane and B.B. King’s Birthdays!

Arthur Rhames

A legend of the underground jazz scene in NY, Arthur Rhames was a dedicated prodigy with staggering technique and expressive capabilities on electric guitar, piano, and tenor saxophone. His reputation has been honored by the words of fans like Vernon Reid, Rashied Ali, and Bill Frisell, and his surviving recordings show a marvelous musical mind at work.

9/12 Martial Solal

Pianist Martial Solal is one of the most significant French jazz artists after Django Reinhardt. A technical genius, his inventive lines and flexible time bend the rules of jazz phrasing. His trio and solo recordings since the 1960’s show a boundary-melting approach to classic jazz that bristles with energy and ideas.

9/19 Bobby Bradford

One of the great brass players of the free jazz world, Bobby Bradford was an early compatriot of Ornette Coleman, with whom he recorded and played through some of Coleman’s most important periods. His lengthy association with clarinetist John Carter yielded some of the best jazz of the 1970’s and 80’s, and his work as a bandleader, composer, and educator continues to be a motivating force for the scene in L.A.

9/26 Mary Halvorson

Originally inspired by educator Anthony Braxton, guitarist Mary Halvorson has carved out an important role as one of the strongest voices of the young forward-leaning jazz scene of NYC winning rare critical acclaim, and her work as a bandleader shows a great balance of ability and creativity.

9/20 Ali Jackson’s tribute to his mentor, Max Roach

Max Roach: bepop pioneer, drum innovator, social activist, teacher, and so much more. He blazed a path for jazz that burns brightest today in his former student Ali Jackson. Jackson -- himself a multi-hyphenate as percussion wizard, composer, and arranger – studied under Roach after meeting him at twelve. Many years later, Jackson pays tribute to his mentor with an all-star ensemble. This exclusive one-night celebration of Roach was captured by Jazz Night in America.

9/27 ELEW

Pianist Eric Lewis has a led a music career in and out of the traditional jazz cannon. Often performed under his stage name ELEW, Lewis has been performing solo piano “Rockjazz” for the past 6 years. In this episode of Jazz Night in America, Lewis “returns” to jazz at Dizzy’s Club Coca Cola with a burning trio featuring Reginald Veal on bass and Jeff “Tain” Watts on drums.
