THE ANNALS OF JAZZ WITH RICHARD HADLOCK Sundays at 7 pm
The sound of surprise describes both jazz itself and the enduring premise of "The Annals of Jazz." Since 1959, host Richard Hadlock has been improvising on historical themes and bringing forth worthy performers—from Armstrong to Zorn. Each Sunday, we may find Annals in Europe, Asia, Latin America or Back of Town anywhere.

Benny Green Plays Monk From the KC Jazz Club at the JFK Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC, it’s the music of Monk, the 20th century pianist who left a trove of compositions and recordings.
9/15 Eddie Palmieri and his Latin Jazz Septet The 2013 National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master Eddie Palmieri and his Latin Jazz Septet are at the JFK Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. Palmieri has been a force for Latin Jazz since the 1950’s, and revolutionized Latin music in the 1960s and 70s.
9/22 Monterey at 55 In September 2012, the Monterey Jazz Festival celebrated 55 years. On this edition of JazzSet, MJF on Tour is at the Kennedy Center and we have highlights.
9/29 Steve Wilson Re-Imagining Bird with Strings Steve Wilson puts a new take on the Charlie Parker classic recording Bird with Strings. TThe stage is full with expectations, as jazz meets classical musicians and vice versa.

Gerry Mulligan & John Lewis Post-war America saw the hard edges of Bebop segue to the Cool. Pianist Jonathan Batiste and baritone saxophone master Joe Temperley join the Jazz at Lincoln Center orchestra to make the Cool all new. The set includes Django, and Delawny’s Dilemma.

Ladies Sing the Blues The rowdy, romantic jazz of the foremothers – Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, and Ethel Waters – raises the roof on the House of Swing. Catherine Russell, Brianna Thomas, and Charenee Wade continue a legacy of strong female voices through songs that helped shape a century of American music.
9/16 Maceo Parker: Funky Stuff Funk’s living legend Maceo Parker brings red-blooded soul to Jazz at Lincoln Center. Parker’s compositions burst with energy as he leads “the Tightest Little Funk Orchestra on Earth” through a set including Off The Hook, Georgia on my Mind, and Make It Funky.
9/23 New Orleans Piano Kings Drummer Herlin Riley brings the beat of the bayou to JALC with three generations of New Orleans piano masters: elder statesman and NEA Jazz Master Ellis Marsalis, seasoned veteran Henry Butler, and young lion Jonathan Batiste. Blues, ragtime, and New Orleans inspiration on modern classics set this Crescent City celebration into full swing.
9/30 Great American Songwriters: Vernon Duke Get whisked away to Autumn in New York, April in Paris, or even A Cabin in the Sky. Pianist Bill Charlap and guests perform the book of composer Vernon Duke. The perfect fall getaway.

Helen Merrill Helen Merrill’s voice is an instrument that sometimes carries the melody and sometimes complements the improvisational skills of her co-musicians. From 1995, McPartland performs a Portrait of Helen Merrill. Merrill joins McPartland to perform songs popularized by Billie Holiday, including Bob Haggart’s What’s New and Holiday’s Don’t Explain.
9/10 Chris Potter Saxophonist Chris Potter is an expressive, inventive, and quick-thinking improviser. In this 2001 session, he talks with McPartland about his experience working in trumpeter Red Rodney’s band and performs I Should Care with bassist Scott Colley.
9/17 Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes Husband and wife pianists Bill Charlap and Renee Rosnes join McPartland in this 2008 session, pushing the bounds of the Piano Jazz format to include three pianos in one room. Charlap is one of the finest interpreters of American popular song and Rosnes is a modern jazz wizard. They join McPartland for a trio of You and the Night and the Music as well as I’ll Remember April.
9/24 Freddy Cole Pianist, composer, and vocalist Freddy Cole can take any song and bring out colors and nuances never heard before. As Nat King Cole’s younger brother, he has developed his own style to showcase his familial vocal talents. He brings this special ability to Sometimes I’m Happy.

9/11 Bob Dorough The legendary vocalist, pianist, and songwriter Bob Dorough, recorded on July 27th, 2014 at the 24th Annual Jazz At Filoli series. He was joined by his favorite sidekick from New York City, guitarist Steve Berger, and two of San Francisco’s greatest, bassist Dean Reilly and drummer Vince Lateano, and special guest vocalist Madeline Eastman.
9/18 Kavita Shah New York-based and globally minded vocalist & composer Kavita Shah celebrated the release of her debut album Visions, with a west coast tour, and a performance at the California Jazz Conservatory, on July 6th, 2014. With Pat Carroll, Steve Newcomb, Noah Garabedian, Guilhem Flouzat, and special guest Rohan Krishnamurthy.
9/25 Cava Menzies and Nick Phillips Pianist Cava Menzies and trumpeter Nick Phillips, recorded at Yoshi’s in Oakland, on February 17, 2014. With Paul Eastburn and Jaz Sawyer. (The group performs again at Musically Minded Academy in Oakland, on Saturday, October 4th.)
