Abstract
Vernacular architecture is a category of architecture based on local needs,
construction materials and reflecting local traditions. Together with contextualism, the term suggests an architecture that responds to its surroundings by respecting what is already there. My research paper is to cover the level of performance of natural air ventilation, environmental strategies and material consideration with a case study of the Traditional Malay House in Penang. PJ Trade Centre located at Damansara Perdana would be a great piece of architecture representing the essence of contextual architecture with the architectural design in relation to natural air ventilation. In assisting the validation of research, literature reviews based on various sources regarding Traditional Malay House in Penang were conducted to enhance the substances of my research. Traditional Malay House in Penang has a focus on natural air ventilation which gain excellent indoor air quality and temperature by applying the maximum ground floor window and door openings which envelope the building wall. PJ Trade Centre designed with elevated floors, high roof, large windows opening and open concept interior layout which adapting this feature of Traditional Penang Malay House. Other than that, the stack effect air ventilating system of Traditional Malay House in Penang which occurs when warm air escapes through roof window openings. PJ Trade Centre triple volume lobby allows sufficient space for stack ventilation to take place. Hence it is relatively significant for building design to be in response to the surrounding context. This study concluded PJ Trade Centre has successfully adapted the design of Traditional Penang Malay House.
