Dear Customer,

KCS Own Brand

More Choice!

Welcome to the Summer 2011 Edition of the KCS Informer. This new financial year presents many challenges for all our customers. Please rest assured that our main focus for the new 2011/12 KCS Catalogue has been on offering you best value. This edition of Informer focuses on how we can help. We are once again very proud of the results of our autumn 2010 Schools Customer Care Survey and we have published the results in this edition of the KCS Informer. You continue to value our range, pricing, delivery and customer care excellence. From May, our pilot groups will start to use our new www.kcswebshop.co.uk to place their orders directly via SIMS/FMS. More detail is included in this edition and we hope to roll out the system to a wider audience from September this year. With the aim of providing customers with even more choice, Kent County Supplies (KCS) and Hertfordshire Supplies (HS) have agreed to produce a joint catalogue, featuring a harmonised product range from April 2012. The new, harmonised product range will enhance your choice of best value products, featuring a range of branded and own brand lines, all from a supplier you can trust.

See pages 4 - 28 of the KCS Main Catalogue

The New KCS Webshop - Brief Guides: May 2011 sees the official launch of our allnew KCS Webshop, www.kcswebshop.co.uk, giving access, with just a click of the mouse. But before you start... All users, regardless of whether or not they have had a previous Webshop account, will need to contact the KCS Web Team in order to have their accounts set up. For the process to be as painless as possible, please ensure that you have the following details to hand: • A contact email address: this will be used as your Username. • The level of access required by the user Administrator, Can Order or Enquiries Only. • Any override addresses required on the account: These will be set up for you. And, for FMS users only... • Your establishment’s DUNS number – if you do not already know this then Capita can give it to you. With this information in hand, get in touch with the KCS web team by emailing: webaccount@kcswebshop.co.uk to set up your account today.

B rowsing & Ordering - The Webshop is divided into the same categories as the KCS main catalogue itself. Products can be sorted alphabetically, or by price, and can be ordered directly from the Product Listing page by entering a quantity and clicking the Shopping Cart icon. For more details on the product, clicking on either the Product Name or image opens the Product Details page. My Account - ‘My Account’, allows users to view account details, previous orders and their status, quotes and profile information. The information available is related to the user rights which are given to a particular user. It allows regularly ordered products (general stationery items and paper, for example) to be re-ordered with just a few clicks.

24 Promotion - Interactive Whiteboards

Promethean offer range of new pen & touchboard Promethean has launched the next generation multi-touch interactive whiteboard that brings popular everyday technology experiences, familiar to users of iPhone, iPad and Windows 7 products, into whole-class teaching and learning. Designed to maximise the potential of new and emerging multi-touch content and applications for education, the ActivBoard 500 Pro series is a large format interactive whiteboard that can be operated simultaneously by both pen and touch. The new ActivBoard 500 provides a more intuitive way of performing tasks; real world hand gestures (tap, flick, swipe, pinch, rotate) can be used to interact with content and media, while the signature ActivPen is provided for writing actions that require greater accuracy. This development means that rather than teachers being offered a choice between pen or touch operated systems, they can now choose a dual mode board and select the most intuitive input method according to the task in hand. Jon Audain, a Year 4 teacher at Titchfield Primary School in Hampshire and an Advanced Skills Teacher for Primary ICT, adds: “The pen and touch capability of the ActivBoard 500 offers the best of both worlds and provides a more natural and fluid way of working. I can uphold the pace of lessons and the truly interactive experience enhances the pupils’ learning and engagement. As the ActivBoard 500 mirrors ‘gestures’ that the learners are used to using with other technologies, it improves their confidence of using the board, as they are already familiar with manipulating objects in this way. I can use the pen to write and my finger to resize or move images around the screen simultaneously which means I have more time to face and connect with the students.”

Children spend 15,000 hours sitting at school. Are you sitting comfortably? Then I will begin… About 22% of 16-year olds and 12% of 12-year olds experience recurrent back pain leading to almost 1 in 6 children between the age of 12 and 16 to seek medical care for their symptoms, so reports the 2004 Health Education Research study undertaken in NW England to look at the prevalence and consequences of back pain in children1.

This underscores similar findings reported by the Lancet in 2003 that “school chair design, with its impact on low back pain, has less legislation than those set for chair design for adults2” and again by The Chartered Institute of Physiotherapy who lays some of the blame at the door of over-laden school bags, the general lack of physical exercise and ill-fitting furniture3. So uncomfortable and ill-fitting furniture wears the bad press badge with ease. It forces children to adopt postures where their abdomens and chests can become compressed thus reducing their oxygen intake. This in turn restricts the supply of properly oxygenated blood to their muscles and brain, which can make limbs feel tired and reduce

overall alertness. Reduced concentration levels and attention spans, as we all know, are the prime cause of inhibited learning. The problem back of course doesn’t stop there as children become less and less mobile through increased time sitting at computers. Children grow into teenagers and then adults and those who suffer back pain when they are young are more likely to develop a problem back as adults. The Health & Safety Executive has plenty to say here too; that chronic back pain adversely impacts learning at school, reduces efficiency at work and impacts the enjoyment of life. It goes on to report that back pain affects almost 80% of the adult

working population at some time in their lives and accounts for 1 in 6 of the working days lost to sickness.4 The added cost to the NHS bill is clearly substantial, if only some of that could find its way back into school furniture budgets! So why are we doing this to our children and what can we do about it? Help is at hand from the new European Standard BS EN 1729 5 that was introduced for furniture in schools in December 2006. This defines and checks functional dimensions and ensures correct seating posture for children’s back care and all the benefits that may bring.Whilst the standard is not currently mandatory in the UK, many responsible and enlightened manufacturers are incorporating BS EN 1729 into their designs. We all know that the classroom environment has an impact and a key role to play in inspiring, motivating and aiding really effective learning. It is this psychological driver that is sometimes overlooked during classroom refurbishments and new build as budgets allocated to furniture are often close to last on the list. But isn’t getting the physiology and furniture ergonomics right the least we can do to for our children? To enable children of all shapes, sizes and age to sit up straight and adopt a comfortable posture during your lessons?

Having both chairs and tables of the correct height helps comfort and concentration to deliver an ideal learning environment, see KCS Furniture Directory pp 94 and ??

Here KCS Furniture can help you, we know the temptation will be either to continue using the old unattractive ill-fitting and less ergonomic furniture or to purchase new chairs and tables with the product decision based solely on price. You know cheap furniture is cheap for a reason and that you will be revisiting your budget for repairs or replacements sooner than you think. Ask yourself about problem backs and what you wish for your children. Is it now “onwards and upwards” for sound advice from us and totally appropriate chairs and tables? Children spend 15,000 hours sitting at school. Are you still sitting comfortably… if so, then I will finish here…

When seated for long periods, it is important to have the right posture to permit plentiful oxygen intake and help sustain attention span and concentration sitting for long periods it is important to have the right posture.

School Shout 33

Brookfield School Class 4G come back to a surprise! Class 4G at Brookfield Junior School in Larkfield, returned from the Christmas break to a new year and a new classroom! During the Christmas break, the classroom was re-decorated and new furniture installed. Class 4G’s Teacher, Miss Goodson, commented that “the classroom is much brighter and easier for staff and pupils to move about during lessons.” She also said “it has had a positive effect on the children whilst in class.” Our thanks go to Adam Short, our Account Manager, for handling the order from start to finish, handling any queries that arose and liaising with suppliers to ensure that delivery was completed before the children returned to school. Shiver me timbers - pirates invade school! When nine-year-old Beatrice Delap wanted to organise a mutiny against her teachers, she knew who to call on. It took just one letter to enlist the aid of the world’s most famous pirate, captain Jack Sparrow. With only 10 minutes warning, Johnny Depp arrived at Meridian Primary School, in Greenwich, in full high-seas regalia with four other cast members. Beatrice sent her appeal when she found out he was filming the latest instalment of Pirates Of The Caribbean at the Old Royal Naval College nearby. The letter said: “Captain Jack Sparrow, at Meridian Primary School we are a bunch of budding young pirates. Normally we’re a right handful but we’re having trouble mutinying against the teachers. We’d love it if you could come and help. From Beatrice Delap, aged nine, a budding pirate.” Depp strode into the school hall, brandished the letter and called her to the front. She said: “It was the most exciting school day ever. I had the idea to write the letter last week after me and a friend went to see the film set. Pat from the school office delivered it.” Depp, 47, spent 15 minutes performing for pupils and dancing with fellow cast members. “He said the pirates were going to take over the school and only eat candy and our teeth would turn black and fall out,” added Beatrice. “But he said we shouldn’t mutiny against the teachers because there were police outside and we might get into trouble.” Meridian School
