MOTIVATION As I write this candidature, I cannot stop thinking of the series of events that took place to lead me to this exact moment. I am left in awe at how interacting with people that believe in their power to change the world can transform a reserved person into an outgoing and confident person that believes in their power to change dreams into reality. . My name is Kudakwashe Dorothy Govore, and it is a great honour for me to present to you my candidature for Regional Director for Africa for the term 2020/2021. Zooming in into some of my experiences through this IFMSA journey, I have experienced and seen moments of extreme happiness and pride, moments of anger and disappointment and, just moments. Sharing all these emotions that run so deep with colleagues in our region has united us all together and brought a different meaning to what we believe Africa is. We have evolved from being silent in plenaries, to unifiedly chanting ‘tsamina mina’ for every NMO within the region and we are finally in the moment that realises that ‘It’s time for Africa!’ The few months of this year alone have been a roller-coaster. As a region, we faced similar problems with our health system. The uncertainty of the future whilst seeing and experiencing all the weaknesses in our health systems. All this taking place in the space of just 4 months since the beginning of the year. However, in an unexpected way this has motivated me to be writing this candidature now because despite the difficulties we face I have always found hope for a better future in IFMSA. So please allow me to take you through a series of events that took place in the space of just 4 years that have given me the power to hope which were accompanied by people that are passionate about what they do. I have always been a people person, who loves and cares so deeply. These characteristics have made me stand up for the minority, be a voice for the voiceless and made it very easy for me to serve within IFMSA. The story began in September 2016 when I was enrolled into medical school. Two enthusiastic second year medical students convinced me to join ZiMSA-Zimbabwe. I was definitely not going to stop myself from enjoying the full university experience and I am grateful for the decision I made on this day. My first experience was being elected as the National preclinical representative for my NMO in my first year. In 2017, I eagerly attended my first ever IFMSA preGA and GA where I was welcomed with warm Panda hugs in TMET sessions and felt at home in the angelic SCORA sessions. In SCOME, I learnt of a world where medical students influenced their education and took up spaces in the decision making, an aspect that myself and a lot of members in my NMO were not aware of and could never imagine. In SCORA, I learnt about sexual and reproductive health rights, which hit close to home because some of the issues we discussed were my reality and still are from time to time as a result of the gender I identify as. After this empowering experience, I knew that I would never turn back. This is where I wanted to spend my time during my medical school life. Not so long after that my NMO hosted its first major event, the 13th ARM, an ARM to remember which I was actively involved in as the PreARM coordinator and as a TMET trainer. As a lot of us may know, after each IFMSA experience, we all go back to our respective lives motivated to be the change we have always p 4 “OWNING OUR NARRATIVE, WRITING OUR OWN STORY ”

wanted to see in our societies. I for sure was really inspired and went on to be elected as the Vice president of internal affairs in my NMO and Finance Assistant for Africa. Then, after that went on to be of service once again as the Development Assistant for Africa, which brings us to the present moment and I am thoroughly enjoying every second of it. The last two terms as a regional team member have given me insight on the Region’s capabilities and acquainted me to how it functions. Both Regional Teams have had significant gains and this has put me in a position to ensure that there is continuity within the Region. 3 GAs, 2 ARMs, 4 NGAs, several responsibilities in leadership positions later, I was equipped with capacity building skills, NMO development and recruitment skills, strategy development, financial management skills and a lot more, and I have the group of influential medical students of IFMSA to thank for that. Through this federation I met mentors, mentees and medical students all over the world who united for global health, trained and developed globally competent, socially responsible medical students who are capable of effective leadership within their communities. Since my first GA up to date I have seen the tremendous growth within our region, from having a few NMOs participating in IFMSA events to having GAs being hosted in Africa. It has been an incredible journey with so much gravity that can only be truly appreciated through experience. We are now at the moment where we have to keep momentum. We need to keep moving. Over the past years, I have managed the Region’s finances, been greatly involved in capacity building and broadened my understanding on the functionality of IFMSA. I am confident that I am the candidate that will not take this responsibility lightly and ensure that the work is handled with the utmost urgency and professionalism that it requires. “Nos Salutations distinguées”,

PLAN OF ACTION

p 6 “OWNING OUR NARRATIVE, WRITING OUR OWN STORY ”

PILLAR ONE : LOOKING WITHIN OURSELVES

This pillar represents the backbone of my work. The strength of our Region lies in the work we put in to maintain stability in our NMOs.

NMO Development and Recruitment Over the past years, the region has grown tremendously. We have worked as DAs to have new candidate members and candidate members being upgraded to full members. I strongly feel that NMO development is important during this time. It will therefore be the mandate of the regional team to facilitate and continue the growth of the region. It is also important to ensure that the already existing full members are assisted to continue with their development. It is important to note that the different NMOs within the regions are at different developmental stages and it is important to focus on these aspects as per NMO’s needs. I will, therefore, ensure that each NMO has its defined priorities so that the RT can be of assistance and to avoid hindering the growth of any NMO. This will be beneficial to ensure that there is sustainability within the NMOs and so that no NMO is left behind within the region. The region will always be stronger together. I plan on following up on the short term and long term goals of the NMOs and ensuring that the RT is of assistance in the development of the NMOs. In the past term, we have been working on different focus areas with NMOs through the RT-NMO Buddy System. I intend on continuing this system to ensure that no NMO is left behind in the growth of the region. The RT NMO Buddy System also creates a space where NMOs can communicate freely with an RT member, discuss different problems and come up with solutions to these problems. I will use feedback from this term’s experience to improve it for the next term. Most NMOs within the region face similar problems therefore I would want to improve the RT NMO Buddy System by ensuring every problem that is discussed and has a solution is recorded for future use for other NMOs. In addition, I also intend on promoting NMO collaboration, this will ensure that NMOs can freely work together and share solutions to the problems we face as a region.

Regional Team The functionality of the region lies in most part with the regional team. Therefore the RT needs to be efficient in their work and goal-oriented with the NMOs’ needs at heart. Selection of the regional team is a very important aspect that will be done effectively, efficiently and transparently. Representation within the RT has a ripple effect on not only the growth but the participation and involvement of the NMOs within the Region. I would like to ensure that the RT is composed of both Francophone and Anglophone members, has gender representation and NMO diversity. This is important as this creates a team that is easily

“OWNING OUR NARRATIVE, WRITING OUR OWN STORY ” p 7

accessible and approachable to all members of the region. I will make sure that the call for International Assistants is effectively advertised within the Region through all of the Africa Region’s social platforms with the use of infographics that are in both French and English. This will help to minimise the number of RT positions that will need a second call and to reach out to as many people in the Region as possible. This also helps to make sure that there is an effective handover as soon as the RT members are selected and to have an early kick-off to the RT work. This term, the RT has been working on handover manuals which will be used during the handover period and I would also want to make sure that they are updated at the end of the term for a smooth transition of the next RT. I will also make sure that the RT work is transparent, has accountability and that there is effective communication. I will ensure that each RT member has a network of national of-

ficers that they will be working with and to perform a needs assessment for the NMOs which will be used as a baseline for the Regional Team’s work with the NMOs during the term. All RT members will also have an Annual Working Plan that also includes inter-regional collaboration and bimonthly reports that will be shared with the NMOs for accountability and transparency of the RT’s work. I will dedicate my time to creating an environment that is safe and comfortable for the RT, have mental health checks and support them in their short and long term goals. I will also make sure that I have personal relationships with them so that they can always feel comfortable to work within the RT. I strongly feel that this is important as this ensures that the RT is confident in their work, gets a smooth transition into their different roles and works as a team. In alignment with the goal to disseminate opportunities within the region more effectively, I would like to appoint a Public relations Regional Assistant who will work on the region’s social media platforms together with the Development Assistants to ensure that the platforms are always active, engaging and opportunities are presented to the regional members and will be responsible for regional publications. The RT will, therefore, consist of a General Assistant, 3 Development Assistants, an External affairs RA, Capacity Building RA, Finance Assistant, p 8 “OWNING OUR NARRATIVE, WRITING OUR OWN STORY ”

Public Relations RA and Standing Committee RAs.

Publication I will ensure that we have biannual publications of Auscultate during the term with submissions from the Region to ensure that our work is published. I will also make sure that we have a quarterly calendar for the term which will be published in the Newsletter which will also cover upcoming events such as the ARM, SRTs etc as well as the RT’s plans in the next quarter and achievements from the previous quarter.I will also make sure that all the documents that are released are translated into French to ensure that all members within the Region benefit from these publications. I will also look into availing sponsored advertising space in the newsletter and Auscultate to create more financial support for regional activities.

Capacity Building ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’ -Nelson Mandela. Capacity building is an important aspect in empowering IFMSA members. It is, therefore, important for the regional members to be provided with opportunities to obtain and continuously develop their skills. I would like to work with the Capacity Building RA to ensure that the region is equipped with the essential skills required for its growth and also making sure that the language barrier with Francophone NMOs ceases to hinder their participation and involvement in CB training. The capacity building will be divided into National, Subregional and Regional Capacity building. The national capacity building will be as per NMO’s request from the RT and can be done online or physically depending on what will be convenient for both the RT member(s) and NMO. This will ensure that the NMOs are equipped with the essential capacity building skills required within their NMOs. Since language has been a barrier for participation in some NMOs I would also like to ensure that we have French-speaking trainers and facilitators to assist with these NMOs. The more French-speaking trainers we have the more participation we will have with these NMOs.

“OWNING OUR NARRATIVE, WRITING OUR OWN STORY ” p 9

Regional Trainer’s Network I would like to ensure that we also have a formal Africa Region trainers network so that we can always have easy access and communication to the trainers within the region. I would also want to make this a priority as this will help us to get assistance from our french speaking trainers within the Region so that they can train more members from French-speaking NMOs. This will ensure that we can have a wider variety of trainers so that we can have a stronger CB system and will provide a wider opportunity for NMOs to have National capacity building training. SRTs, ARM and GAs (Regional Sessions)

SRTs, ARM and GAs (Regional Sessions) I would like to ensure that we have advertisements of SRTs, the ARM and GAs within the region well before the deadline of application of these events to ensure that members can fully benefit the IFMSA experience. I also intend to have online preparations with the Heads of delegates and NMO presidents of IFMSA events before the events so that members can fully understand what is expected of them during IFMSA events. I would also suggest this to happen with the SCs so that no one is unaware of what will be required during the SC sessions. I would also like to make use of the Survival kits to prepare attendees of the IFMSA events and to also educate anyone that was not able to attend the event. Follow up kits will also be used to highlight the experiences during the events, to help attendees to relive their experience and everyone else to also benefit from what happened during the sessions etc. This term, the RT has been working on a CoC for our Regional events which I plan on implementing during the SRTs and ARM of the next term. I will also provide a platform for feedback and contribution from NMOs to ensure that we can improve it for future events and have safe and conducive SRTs and ARMs that are inclusive.

Financial Sustainability Finances within the region have always hindered the region’s growth and capacity. Working as Finance Assistant in the term 2018/2019 and working closely with the Finance Assistant this term has given me perspective on the strategy the region needs to take with regards to its finances and ensuring that NMOs are sustainable. I would like to ensure that: h We commence the regional TAF as mentioned in our Regional Regulations to provide the opportunity within the region for people to be able to attend the Regional Meeting. h NMOs are empowered with financial capacity building sessions to assist them with financial management h We establish a fundraising strategy and create a sponsorship prospectus as well as approaching sponsors within the region that can be of assistance for the members of the Region to be able to attend GAs, SRTs and ARMs. h We apply for grant opportunities for activities within the Region to ensure that they are sustainable and affordable for every member of the Region and assist NMOs p 10 “OWNING OUR NARRATIVE, WRITING OUR OWN STORY ”

h h

with applying for grants for their activities projects Applications for IFMSA funds reach the Region and are explained adequately to make sure that they can make use of them Prepare NMOs to pay IFMSA membership fees on time or create a payment plan before the DL to ensure that NMOs do not incur any debts

Collaboration with the TO IFMSA Africa is a region in IFMSA, therefore this means that the word of RD Africa is not only limited to the Region but expands to the Team of Officials work. If elected as the RD I will dedicate my time to the TO and be a team player. Being a dedicated IFMSA member and volunteering my services in the past years has equipped me with the skills I need to be a conscientious member of the TO. I will actively contribute to the discussions and work of the TO. I will also work closely with all the TO members individually for the benefit of the Region. I intend to be available for all TO meetings as well as to actively attend the GAs during the term.

“OWNING OUR NARRATIVE, WRITING OUR OWN STORY p 11

PILLAR TWO: LOOKING AROUND US This pillar represents the heart of my work and it’s driving force is the love our members have for Africa. Our love for our Region will forever grow and I want to make sure that we keep that flame blazing.

External Affairs This term, the region has made a lot of progress in external affairs. It is therefore my intention to ensure that the momentum is kept and keep improving on the work (particularly with external meetings affected by COVID-19 this term.) that has been done so far. External Representation within our region is a pillar that is very important for the growth of our region. At the beginning of the term, I intend to perform a stakeholder analysis of our partners. Some of the partners in our region will include but will not be limited to: h

h

h

h

h

WHOAfro - During this term, this has been an important partner and has involved us in their webinars. I would like to ensure that we are more involved regionally by participating with the Regional committee and locally, by ensuring that each NMO has a contact person within their countries. This will ensure that we can make a larger impact within the region by ‘thinking global and acting local’. I will target collaborative campaigns with WHO AfRO on key issues such as COVID-19 and Antimicrobial Stewardship. FAMSA - This is a federation of African Medical Students which we already have an MOU with and have worked with during our term. I would like to make sure that we have an Annual Working Plan together to work on our shared priorities such as Sexual and Reproductive Health Rights at the beginning of the term to make sure that we make a larger impact in our Region. IPSF - I would like to strengthen the relationship we have with this federation by sending delegates to the African Pharmaceutical Symposium which will be in Johannesburg, South Africa in July 2021. Additionally, I will work on connecting our NMOs with IPSF members at national levels. WONCA Africa - WONCA has a mission to improve the quality of life of the peoples of the world through defining and promoting its values, including respect for universal human rights and including gender equity, and by fostering high standards of care in general practice/family medicine. I intend to ensure that IFMSA Africa Members are involved in some of their activities and to send delegates to their World Rural Health Conference which will be held in Kampala, Uganda in August 2021. This will provide a platform where our members can learn more about being effective healthcare providers in rural communities in the future. African Union - As young people in Africa we are the future of the region therefore it is imperative that we are involved with the AU. I intend to work with the AU to ensure that IFMSA Africa members are involved in the internships so that we can also be part of the decision making in some key programme areas such as ‘Promoting health and Nutrition’, ‘Youth empowerment’ and ‘Gender equality and development’. I intend to target collaboration with the African CDC too.

p 12 “OWNING OUR NARRATIVE, WRITING OUR OWN STORY ”

h

h

WMA (World Medical Association) Africa - is an association representing physicians which aims to serve humanity by endeavouring to achieve the highest international standards in Medical Education, Medical Science, Medical Art and Medical Ethics, and Health Care for all people in the world. Some of their focus areas that we may be involved in include medical ethics, human rights, public health and campaigns which include outreach activities which implement their policies. I would like to prioritise having webinar series with them on Universal health coverage and the role of medical students which will be beneficial for our Region as we aim for UHC. Medical Women’s International Association (MWIA) and Young MWIA - This is an association which has an important voice and influence on issues of interest to medical women, has a goal to locally, nationally and globally initiate and support scientific projects relating to health and well-being and serves as a platform for medical women and students to foster dialogue and action on various health issues internationally e.g female genital mutilation, women’s reproductive health, maternal and infant mortality. These are most of the issues that are tackled by SCORA and I, therefore, intend to have joint forces with them in educating our members on these issues through webinars. I would also want to ensure that NMOs have contact persons within their countries with the National Associations so that they can be involved in the activities locally.

Regional Priorities During the Regional meeting in December 2019, the region voted for this term’s regional priorities. This was the first time the Regional priorities were ever implemented within the Africa region. We have had a webinar series on global health leadership which has been beneficial to the Region and provided a platform where members can ask and learn more about GHL. I intend to evaluate the work that was done on the regional priorities this term and get feedback from the NMOs and use it to improve on the Regional priorities work for the next term. I would like to ensure that there is more capacity on the Regional Priorities and having online sessions and webinars with our Regional partners. I also want to ensure that there is more awareness of the regional priorities during GAs and ARMs, encourage NMOs to incorporate the Regional Priorities on NMO level and in Standing Committees. Addditionally, in this term I will elucidate a clear criterion to select regional priorities. This term, the External Affairs RA has been working on a Regional Priorities Manual which I would like to make sure is utilised effectively in the upcoming term.

Africa Region Team Building During this term, our Region has formed closer bonds and I feel it is important to keep these bonds and make them as strong as possible to benefit the region. On Africa Day we had a campaign that promoted the diversity we have in the region and falling in love with the ‘Africa’ within ourselves. I would also like to continue building this team spirit through more campaigns that will bring the Region together and having sessions during the ARM that can bring everyone together without any social barriers of either being a head of delegate, general member, RT member etc.

“OWNING OUR NARRATIVE, WRITING OUR OWN STORY ” p 13

PILLAR THREE: LOOKING BEYOND NOW... This pillar represents the long term work that requires constant updating for the betterment of the Region.

Africa Regional Strategy The Regional Strategy is important in achieving our goals as a Region. As we enter our last year of implementing the Regional Strategy, it is important to evaluate our progress and make use of the remaining time effectively. I will therefore ensure that we get feedback from NMOs and previous RTs on the Regional strategy 2018-2021 and how to further implement the Regional Strategy. This will provide a baseline on the work that needs to be done by the RT in the next term. I will also communicate and get assistance from other RDs on the best practises of implementing the strategy in the last year. In addition I will look into creating a survey and a team towards the end of the term that will be used in the creation of a new Africa Region Strategy.

IFMSA Africa Alumni Society Our Region has been constantly growing and this journey would have not happened if it was not for our unsung heroes that have been there before us. It will therefore be a goal of mine during the term to create a database directory and email list for communication with our alumni where we can update them on how far we have come as a region, our achievements and events. We will also use this platform to share our publications with the alumni which they may also be part of to motivate the Region’s participation. I would also want to look into the possibility of having an Alumni mentorship program as I have talked to a few alumni who would be keen to provide mentorship to members of the Region.
