Message from the Route Director

14th Annual This year marks the 14th annual Daily News Boogie. Once again there are a few changes and improvements to ensure our participants, volunteers and spectators are treated to a safe, fun filled event. Last year we introduced our vibrant sea of red t-shirts to the city’s downtown. Once again we will be starting in the middle of the 200 block of Victoria St., however the warm up stage will be moving to the start of fourth and Victoria, as well our 5K turn around now encompasses Fort Ave. & Baker.

without the active co-operation of the City of Kamloops and the many sponsors (check out www.dailynewsboogie.ca). The City, which is into its third year as one of the major event sponsors, has a number of skilled and passionate people (in Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services, Community and Corporate Affairs, Business Client Services, Development and Engineering, Public Works and Utilities) who worked tirelessly with me to ensure the Boogie Route for 2011 will be the best ever. On behalf of the Boogie Society, good luck to all participants. Vince Cavaliere, Route Director The Daily News Boogie

Message from our MLA Welcome to the 14th annual Daily News Boogie— a Kamloops tradition that helps people stay healthy physically and spiritually while contributing to the social development of our community. When I was asked by the Premier to serve as the Parliamentary Secretary for Health Promotion this year I was delighted to spread the word of active living. There is no better example for British Columbians than our own Daily News Boogie that was started by the inspirational Jo Berry in 1998. Jo and her dedicated team have nurtured the Boogie into one of the biggest and best fun runs in the province with over 2,200 participants including many young families. Thanks to all of the volunteers and sponsors for their support and remember to stay healthy and have fun!

Have fun and keep moving. Sincerely, Terry Lake, MLA

Message from our Mayor On behalf of my colleagues on Council, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the organizers for all of their hard work and effort in organizing another successful Kamloops Daily News Boogie. We are grateful for the business community that continues to make contributions to sponsor this event on an annual basis. A big thank you also goes out to all of the volunteers that continue to give back to our community by making Boogie the huge success that it is. The commitment you have shown towards the betterment of Kamloops is truly appreciated. In addition to the funds that are raised locally for various agencies, Boogie brings together participants in every age group and ability. As Canada’s Tournament Capital, Kamloops is striving to be a healthy community. Events such as Boogie enable us to meet, maintain, and strive for our own personal health goals. Best of luck to all the participants! Yours truly, Peter Milobar, Mayor

Each participant is passionate about promoting community health for people of all ages and all shapes and sizes. That’s what The Daily News Boogie is about — welcoming moms, dads, kids, grandparents and runners of all levels onto the street to set their pace toward fitness. The Daily News wishes you all the best of luck as you head out to meet your individual goal whether that is the mini-boogie, a five-kilometre walk, the 10-kilometre or a 21-kilometre run. This Year’s Charity

ASK Wellness Centre once again embarks on a journey of gratitude with the Daily News Boogie. This is our second year working with the committee to support community health and wellness and to raise funds for those most in need. It is an honour to witness the devotion and creativity that the group puts into the event. Last year we were naïve to the energy required to put the event together. We were caught off guard by the amount of volunteers and resources needed to showcase a community coming together. This year we feel prepared and grateful to be considered worthy of the community’s support. It is this support that helps make our community the compassionate place it is. Every day we witness the panic and fear that comes with potentially losing your home, having no food in the fridge for the kids, or realizing your utilities are about to be turned off and knowing you, as a parent, can’t resolve this. Our goal in all our services is to instil hope in those who use our services. Whether it is simply to get directions to a helping professional or assisting

a family in finding and furnishing a home and supplying the first week of groceries in one day, it is the hope that tomorrow may be better than today and knowing your community cares about you. That is the work we do. We serve hundreds of people every week who fit the mandate for the Daily News Boogie funding criteria, in that they have exhausted every avenue of assistance, and it is with great pride that we can be the community’s vehicle of compassion by providing the financial resources to help them in their time of crisis. Every dollar raised by this great event is used for making a difference in the lives of low and fixed income families. We take pride in ensuring every cent is used in accordance with the community’s expectations and it remains an honour to be considered worthy of such good will. To all that helped prepare for the event and to those who will be joining us on Boogie day, we thank you. Bob Hughes

Boogie Cultural Fund

Where does the money go? Boogie the Bridge Cultural Fund (BBCF) was established in 2005 to support, develop and nurture creative growth for Kamloops’ children and youth. It was then the Boogie committee realized that more and more families were less able to afford to participate in cultural activities, such as classes, events and workshops in music, theatre, dance and art. The fund’s purpose is to make arts and culture accessible to all children and youth of Kamloops. Each year, 10 per cent of the total raised during the Daily News Boogie is placed into the Boogie the Bridge Cultural Fund. Funds are annually awarded for up to $250 per child/youth between the ages of five to 18, based on needs and merit. Since 2007 this fund has awarded over $15,900 to support more than 160 children and youth to participate in cultural programs. The Forester is more responsive around town with the new, next-generation naturally aspirated 2.5-litre SUBARU BOXER engine or available turbocharged version. Combined with our award-winning safety ratings, the 2011 Forester is the right choice for the road ahead. It’s an ideal balance of performance, versatility and outright fun for roads often taken, and the ones less travelled.
