Toyota Corolla more fuel efficient than ever

Overall: Toyota’s multi-million-seller compact brand adds more size and sizzle and also moves up a notch in its fuel-efficiency ranking. Drivetrain: Base 1.8-litre four-cylinder engine; five-speed manual transmission and four-speed automatics remain; fuel-sipping CVT optional, standard with LE Eco model. For a small car, the Corolla has some big numbers to brag about. Like the fact that in 47 years Toyota has sold more than 40 million of them and currently operates 16 factories worldwide that ship Corollas to 154 countries. The all-new 11th-generation North American version comes on strong with a bit more style — especially from the windshield forward — than its broad base of customers are used to seeing. Nothing too radical, mind you, but just enough design drama to create some politely muffled ooh’s and ah’s. Where the new Corolla shines, however, is in passenger accommodations and comfort. The car has grown about four inches in overall length and in distance between the front and rear wheels. In addition a slightly wider cabin also contributes to more passenger space. Interior styling has also improved, but in a conservative way that differs from more

2014 Toyota Corolla daring competitors. Likewise, engine choices eschew anything performance-related. A 132-horsepower four-cylinder carries over from the previous generation and is connected to a six-speed manual transmission for the base CE and the S. A fourspeed automatic transmission is optional on the CE, while a new continuously variable unit (CVT) is optional for S and standard for LE and LE ECO. To reduce that

Toyota Tundra Overall: Toyota gives the Tundra a refresh with a new nose, better-quality interior parts and a new “1794 Edition” that’s the company’s take on high-end cowboy luxury. Drivetrain: Two V8s that produce 310 and 381 horsepower; six-speed automatic transmissions all around. Although Toyota hasn’t sold as many of its full-size Tundras as it might have expected, it hasn’t given up. In fact, the Tundra has been given a mid-cycle facelift that incorporates a new hood and reprofiled grille, along with a three-piece lower bumper and squared-off fenders and wheel wells. The bed sides and the cargo area are new as is the tailgate. However, the overall profile hasn’t changed: Tundras continue to be available in your choice of Regular-cab, extended-length Double Cab and four-door CrewMax with its extra-sized rear doors. The 310-horsepower 4.6-litre V8 and toptuned 381-horsepower 5.7 V8 are untouched and both use six-speed automatic transmissions. Four-wheel-drive is optional, of course. Inside, the roomy cabin features several improvements to make life easier for the driver, including moving the HVAC and audio controls six centimetres closer.

2014 ToyotaTundra

New seats feature better ventilation and can also travel more. Base regular-cab models actually come fairly well equipped with air conditioning and a 6.1-inch (15.5-centimetre) touchscreen display with Bluetooth short-range wireless networking and a backup camera. Adding more doors to the cab automatically gets you more, although many of those standard features can be added to regular-cab models by choosing the SR5 Package and the SR5 Plus Package. The new Platinum 1794 Edition is billed as a tribute to the ranch, founded in the year 1794, where the Tundra plant is located in Texas. You get saddle-brown leather touches with suede inserts, and other luxuries. •Base price: $28,450 (regular cab) •Type: Full-size pickup •Base engine: 4.6-litre DOHC V8 (310) •Optional engine: 5.7-litre DOHC V8 (381) •Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 14.2/10.5 (4.6, 2WD) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver/front passenger knee airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control •Weight (lb.): 2,230

“rubber-band” sensation of varying engine speed that’s prevalent with many CVT applications, Toyota’s engineers added seven artificial shift points that function automatically (or can be controlled through available steering-column-mounted paddle shifters) to simulate the action of a regular automatic transmission. The LE ECO is also equipped with a 140-horsepower version of the 1.8 that’s rated at 6.5 l/100 km on the

highway and 4.6 in the city, compared to the base model’s 6.9/5.2 rating with the CVT. Aside from a more efficient engine with special variable valve timing, those figures are achieved with the help of underbody panels that improve the car’s aerodynamics (and reduce highway-speed fuel consumption). As before, entry-level Corollas don’t come with air conditioning ; that’s saved for the LE and the S. The LE ECO gets climate control. All models comes with steel wheels as standard, with aluminum wheels available only as an option. •Base price (incl. destination): $17,600 •Type: Four-door sedan •Engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (132, 140 LE ECO) •Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed manual; fourspeed automatic (opt. on base); continuously variable (opt.) •Mileage (city/hwy): 7.1/5.2 (6MT); 6.5/4.6 (LE ECO) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver’s side knee airbag; front-passenger seat-cushion airbag; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control •Weight (lb.): 1,265

Scion tC Overall: Scion is so impressed with how its rear-wheel-drive FR-S coupe looks that it’s making the 2014 tC coupe look similar. Drivetrain: A 180-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder sends power to the front wheels via a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic. Now that the rear-wheel-drive FR-S is officially a hit, Scion is letting some of the magic spread to the older sibligs. The tC now has new squintier headlights and a larger dark grey grille that expands as it heads south. There’s also a new hood and a new 18-inch wheel design. The rear end gets new taillights, bumper cover and lower fascia. The revisions still leave buyers with freedom to make dealer-supplied modifications such as different wheels, spoilers and even a widebody kit. Under the hood there’s a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that generates 179 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. Six-speed transmissions, either manual or optional automatics, handle the shifting duties. Still in play is Scion’s philosophy of offering well-equipped cars in one trim level that can then be customized, so the standard-equipment list includes air conditioning, cruise control, 18-inch alloy wheels, an-

2014 Scion tC

ti-lock brakes, a power dual-pane moonroof, power windows, locks and mirrors. The 2014 model does do a few things differently, including a new standard 15-centimetre display-audio system. The tC also comes with the requisite six airbags plus a driver’s knee airbag. With the rear seat (which actually reclines up to 45 degrees) and the front passenger seat folded flat, the hatchback-accessible stowage area can swallow objects up to 250-centimetres (eight feet) in length. That’s impressive value for a car that rings in at dollar-stretching $22,850, including destination and free basic maintenance at the 8,000- and 16,000-kilometre intervals. It’s those little extras that make the range of Toyota’s junior-division cars so popular. •Base price (incl. destination): $23,000 •Type: Two-door hatchback coupe •Engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (179) •Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt.) •l/100 km (city/highway): 8.9/6.4 (MT) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver’s knee airbag; anti-lock brakes •Weight (kg): 1,380

Grand Cherokee stuns with new turbo diesel engine

Overall: The legendary Grand Cherokee gets better looking while using less fuel with all-new turbo-diesel engine; stoplightracer SRT gets standard launch control and new transmission for faster getaways. Drivetrain: New turbo-diesel V6 has more torque than a gasoline “Hemi” V8, but base 3.6-litre V6 is perfect for allaround use; optional 360-horse V8 is a towing and heavy-hauling favourite; the SRT8’s 470-horsepower “Hemi” V8 lights a rocket under the Grand Cherokee’s platform, if that’s your thing; eight-speed automatics now standard across the board. Although now well into its fourth generation, the rugged five-passenger Grand Cherokee remains one of the most popular vehicles in its class. To keep it there, Jeep has come up with more than a few mid-life upgrades, both above and below the surface. While GC’s on- and off-road agility is largely attributable to the various suspension components it shares with the Mercedes-Benz ML-class tall wagon, the Jeep is tuned very differently. Under the hood, Jeep uses the corporate 290-horsepower 3.6-litre V6 while the 360-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8 is optional. However, Jeep is finally reintroducing a turbo-diesel

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT engine in the GC for 2014. Although it’s similar in displacement and output to the last diesel, the 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” (240 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque) is sourced from Italian firm VM Motori rather than Mercedes-Benz. The EcoDiesel can deliver 9.8 l/100 km in the city and 7.0 on the highway, versus 12.4 and 8.3 for the V6. Part of those savings are attributable to the new eight-speed automatic transmission, even in the high-powered SRT8. With a 470-horsepower 6.4-litre “Hemi”, 20-inch

Ram Heavy Duty Overall: Although they’re not redesigned often, HD pickups are continually evolving; Ram HD is now the first non-SRT vehicle to get the hotrod 6.4-litre “Hemi” V8. After the Ram 2500 and 3500 series pickups upped the stakes with their optional Cummins turbo-diesel available in evil, eviler and eviler-est grades in 2013, that left a rather big step down to the base 5.7-litre V8. What to do? Well, add the 6.4-litre SRT V8 to the lineup, of course. As for the Cummins, the tamest of the 6.7-litre inline six-cylinder powerplants is rated at 350 horsepower and 660 pound-feet of torque, while the intermediate version pushes those numbers to 370 horsepower and 800 pound-feet. For maximum thrust and grunt, the 385-horse unit lays down 850 pound-feet. The Cummins can be matched to a six-speed manual transmission (the only shift-it-yourself in its class), or a six-speed automatic. The result is a truck that can haul and tow up to 7,730 kilogram of trailer weight and up to 820 kilograms of tongue weight using a conventional Class V hitch. The turbo-diesel has a standard exhaust brake that uses the engine’s compression to help decelerate the vehicle. That means shorter stops and less brake

2014 Ram HD

wear. Previously an SRT exclusive in the car line, the 6.4 is optional in both the 2500 and 3500. The 6.4 delivers 410 horses and 429 pound-feet of torque. For maximum towing, a coil-sprung rear suspension with air bladders is available on 2500 models, while 3500 use optional air springs integrated into the existing leaf-sprung suspension. Tow ratings of just under 8,180 kilograms and 13,600 kilograms, respectively, are simply ridiculous. Of course four-wheel-drive is available, but in the HD it has a disconnect feature that disengages the forward driveshaft from the transfer case when not needed, thus cutting fuel consumption. •Base price (incl. destination): $41,200 •Type: Two- /four-door heavy-duty pickup •Base engine (hp): 5.7-litre OHV V8 (383) •Optional engine (hp): 6.4-litre OHV V8 (410); 6.7-litre OHV I6, turbo-diesel (350, 370, 385) •Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed manual (std. with turbo-diesel); six-speed automatic (opt. on 6.7, std. with 5.7, 6.4) •l/100 km (city/highway): n/a •Safety: Front airbags, side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes •Weight (kg): 2,410

wheels with stickier road-biased tires, upgraded brakes, active suspension and active limited-slip differentials that are now re-tuned to send more power to the rear in enthusiastic driving, this is one Jeep that’s as much fun through corners as it is from a standing start. Jeep states this speed brat will reach 60 mph (96 km-h) in less than five seconds, which is made even easier in 2014 thanks to standard launch control. Other more “normal” GC models — Laredo, Limited, Overland and Summit, which

is new for 2014 — come in standard fourwheel-drive. The Summit is a full-on luxury model that eclipses even the already spangly Overland and includes adaptive HID headlights and dual exhaust tips, while inside everything is slathered in “Natura Plus” leather, open-pore wood trim, a faux-suede headliner and dual-pane moonroof. Finally, Summit features an 825-watt 19-speaker Harmon Kardon surround-sound system that’ll replicate any music perfectly. The best 4x4 system is Quadra Drive II that includes Jeep’s SelecTerrain control with settings for Sand/ Mud; Snow; and Rock for off-road terrain plus a Sport setting for dry pavement. •Base price (incl. destination): $41,700; $64,700 (SRT) •Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle •Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (290) •Optional engine (hp): 5.7-litre OHV V8 (360); 3.0-litre DOHC V6, turbo-diesel (240); 6.7-litre OHV V8 (470, SRT) •Layout: Front-engine, four-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 12.4/8.3 (3.6) •Safety: Front airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control •Weight (kg): 2,030

Grand Caravan Overall: Dodge created the whole minivan segment 30 years ago and now celebrates the Grand Caravan’s birthday with a special model. Drivetrain: Solid 3.6-litre V6 with sixspeed automatic transmission posts respectable fuel-consumption numbers. The minivan segment was sparked 30 years ago with the Chrysler “Magic Wagons” and that’s a good excuse for a birthday party. The Grand Caravan combines a great starting price with plenty of space and decent performance. Since its 2011-modelyear updating, the GC drives more securely and frugally with a revised suspension topped with low-rolling-resistance tires to help prop up fuel economy. At the same time, the interior was upgraded with new gauges and soft-touch dashboard and doorpanel surfaces replacing hard plastic. The 3.6-litre “Pentastar” V6 that was introduced at the same time produces 283 horsepower and, mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, easily runs with the minivan herd for fuel consumption. Inside, the standard third-row split-folding bench seat can be power folded to create a flat load floor. The Stow ‘n’ Go feature comes with a one-

2014 Grand Caravan

touch-down feature and provides out-ofsight storage bins when the second-row seats are left in their upright positions. The price-leading Canada Value Package, heads the list of trim levels that also includes SXT, Crew, Crew Plus and the sporty R/T. The Canadian Value Package rings in at $29,700, but usually sells for less than $22K and includes most of the basic features and safety systems you would expect. At the top end, the $42,600 R/T comes with a tighter suspension. The 2014 30th Anniversary Edition builds on the mid-level SXT and adds 17-inch wheels and chrome trim outside, along with badging, black leather-and-suede seats, piano-black accents and more. There’s also a Blacktop package that includes polished wheels and blacked-out trim. •Base price (incl. destination): $29,700 •Type: Four-door minivan •Engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (283) •Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 12.2/7.9 •Safety: Front airbags; side-curtain; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control •Weight (kg): 2,050

New Cherokee sports modern sculpting

Overview: The Cherokee name returns following a lengthy hiatus, but it’s dressed up in more contemporary sheetmetal that belies its ability to still navigate difficult onand off-road terrain. Drivetrain: A Fiat-based 2.4-litre fourcylinder is supplemented by a 3.2-litre V6 option; standard nine-speed automatic transmission helps reduce fuel consumption, while three optional 4x4 systems supply a range of traction needs. Following the Jeep Liberty’s retirement, Chrysler-Fiat’s off-road division has resurrected the Cherokee name, but with a significant shift in direction. Instead of the brick-like original, the Cherokee has some seriously modern sculpting going on. The pinched and pointy-nose grille says plenty about the risk that Jeep’s designers have undertaken in creating the new Cherokee. Then there are the eyelet headlights that would have been impossible to imagine on any production car, Jeep or otherwise. The interior is as modern as the outside. All but the most basic Cherokee models feature 12.7- or 21.3-centimetre touch-screens, depending on the trim level, that operate cli-

2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk mate, communications and infotainment systems. Base models get a Fiat-designed 2.4-litre four-cylinder worth 184 horsepower and 171 pound-feet of torque. Optional is an all-new 3.2-litre V6 that’s rated at 271 horses. It’s a subset of Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 that’s the base engine in the larger Jeep Grand Cherokee and the Ram pickup. In the Cherokee’s case, ordering the V6 provides a 2,045-kilogram towing

Ram 1500

Overall: Not to be outdone, Ram combines best-in-the-business functionality and diversity to all others and does one better by being the first of the bunch to offer a turbo-diesel option. Drivetrain: Chrysler’s 3.6-litre V6 and 5.7-liter “Hemi” V8 is joined by all-new 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” V6; eight-speed automatic transmission and other countermeasures help Ram reduce fuel consumption to industry leading levels. The Ram 1500 has always had plenty of attitude, but who knew it could balance that macho-ness with fuel performance? That was partially addressed when Chrysler’s ever-popular 3.6-litre V6 found its way into the engine bay. With 305 horsepower and 11.4 l/100 km in the city and 7.8 on the highway, it is a sweet combination. Its eight-speed automatic transmission also helped and it can now also be attached to the 395-horsepower 5.7-litre “Hemi” V8. The big news for 2014 is the optional 3.0-litre “EcoDiesel” V6, which makes the Ram 1500 the only light-duty diesel pickup in North America. Using the same figures as for the Jeep Grand Cherokee — 240 horsepower and 420 pound feet of torque — with the eight-speed automatic, it can tow 3,270 kilograms, which is the same as the regular gas V6. Rams get

2014 Ram 1500

further fuel-reduction with stop-start technology that turns off the engine at rest, then instantly fires it up again once the brake pedal is released. Optional is an air suspension with load leveling and five height settings, one of which lowers the body at highway speeds by 1.5 centimetres to cut the wind better. As for body styles, regular-cab models are available with a sixfoot, four-inch box, or an eight-footer, while Quad Cabs get the shorter box only. The larger four-door Ram Crew gets you a 5’7” bed, or the six-foot, four-inch bed option. When it comes to four-wheel-drive, buyers can choose between a part-time system and an on-demand setup that automatically engages when road conditions warrant. •Base price (incl. destination): $28,700 •Type: Two- /four-door pickup •Base engine (hp): 3.6-litre DOHC V6 (305) •Optional engines (hp): 3.0-litre DOHC V6, turbo-diesel (240); 5.7-liter OHV V8 (395) •Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Eight-speed automatic (3.6, 3.0, opt. on 5.7); six-speed automatic (5.7) •l/100 km (city/highway): 11.4/7.8 (3.6, 4x2) •Safety: Front airbags; impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. •Weight (kg): 2,080

capacity. Both engines are connected to nine-speed automatic transmissions, which is the first use of that gear changer in any Chrysler product. Front-wheel-drive is the norm, but buyers can choose from three different four-wheel-drive setups, depending on trim level. Active Drive I, optional in the Sport, North and Limited editions, is a single-speed unit that kicks in automatically whenever tire slip is detected. Active

Drive II, also available in North and Limited, comes with a two-speed transfer case and is designed for off-road use with either the four- or six-cylinder engines. But for rock crawling and boulder hopping, Active Drive Lock, locks up the rear differential in low range. This system is standard in the Cherokee Trailhawk, which is a “Trail Rated” rig outfitted with an off-road suspension (increases ride height by an inch), skid plates, unique alloy wheels with all-terrain rubber, blacked-out trim and a full-size spare tire. All 4x4 systems include SelecTerrain traction control with five different settings to match the kind of ground you’re covering (snow, sand, mud, etc.). •Base price (incl. destination): $25,200 •Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle •Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (184) •Opt. engine (hp): 3.2-litre DOHC V6 (271) •Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Nine-speed automatic •L/100 km (city/highway): 9.6/6.4 (2.4 FWD) •Safety: Front airbags; front/rear side-impact airbags; side-curtain; front knee airbags; antilock brakes; traction control; stability control. •Weight (kg): 1,640

Wrangler Overall: Jeep’s iconic off-roader adds more tricks and special editions that are ready to tackle the Rubicon Trail right off the showroom floor. Drivetrain: The 3.6-litre V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque; six-speed manual transmission and optional five-speed automatic. The Wrangler has come a long way from its birth as wartime transport for millions of GIs, but that go-anywhere attitude remains its biggest appeal. The legendary off-roader enjoys a hardcore following; people who fearlessly dare to use these rugged rascals the way they’re intended. Of course not everyone goes boulder-hopping and canyon-crawling in their Wranglers (the Jeep, not the Jeans), and the vehicle has been slowly and methodically updated to be more friendly to urban commuters. But do good seats and a modern powertrain hurt the offroad experience? Of course not, so it’s really win-win. But there’s more. The back seat of the fourdoor Unlimited model as well as the soft top both fold easily using, amazingly, just one hand. Both two- and four-door Wranglers can be ordered with a premium top that reportedly is easier to clean and its three layers add a degree of noise insulation. Unchanged is the Chrysler-designed

2014 Wrangler Unlimited

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander

Mirage goes easy on Mother Nature Take another look at the Outlander Overview: It’s lightweight and designed to be light on the wallet while treading lightly on Mother Nature. Powertrain: The 74-horsepower 1.2-litre three-cylinder doesn’t seem like much, but the Mirage weighs about 250 kilograms less than a Mazda MX-5; five-speed manual transmission or an optional continuously variable unit good for 5.3 l/100 km in the city. The Mirage is perched low to the ground on tiny 14-inch wheels while the rounded and somewhat stubby front gives the car a cute appearance that belies its wind-cheating drag coefficient. The interior appointments are simple, yet tasteful, with easy-to-read gauges and controls. The 60:40 split rear seat can be folded down for added stowage, but even when occupied there’s reasonable space for groceries and gear. Of course, contemplating a vehicle this small usually involves compromises and in the Mirage’s case you give up room in return for exemplary fuel economy. The car’s pumppassing nature comes from a 74-horsepower 1.2-litre three-cylinder engine mated to your

choice of a five-speed manual transmission or optional continuously variable unit (CVT). The latter features Idle Neutral Logic, which automatically shifts the transmission into neutral when stopped to save fuel, then switches back into drive mode when the go pedal is pushed. Mitsubishi is touting 5.3 l/100 km in the city and 4.4 highway for the CVT. Mitsubishi includes a five-year/100,000-kilometre bumper-to-bumper warranty, 10 years/160,000kilometres on the powertrain and five years unlimited roadside assistance. •Base prices (incl. destination): $13,700 •Type: Four-door hatchback •Base engine (hp): 1.2-litre DOHC I4 (74) •Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Five-speed manual; continuously variable (opt.) •L/100 km (city/highway): 5.9/4.6 (MT); 5.3/4.4 (CVT) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; driver’s knee airbag; antilock brakes; traction control; stability control. •Weight (lb.): 1,860

2014 MIRAGE

Overall: Easy on gas, could this tall wagon find a home in your driveway? Optional threerow seating might help sway you. Drivetrain: Four-cylinder and V6 options with good fuel economy. The 2014 Outlander wagon has cleaned up its design both inside and out for 2014. The new model still shares the previous Outlander’s platform and dimensions, equating to nearly identical space for passengers and cargo. Mitsubishi has upgraded the seats, door panels and dashboard (the latter with softtouch material) and added more cabin insulation for a quieter ride. As well, the split-folding second and third rows have been redesigned to fold more easily. The Outlander has managed to shed some 90 kilograms, which should help performance. The standard 2.4-litre fourcylinder produces 166 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. That’s down slightly from before, but with the weight reduction it won’t be noticed. The four-cylinder is standard with the ES, while SE and GT S-AWC trims are fitted with a 3.0-litre V6 that delivers 224

horsepower and 215 pound-feet of torque. The V6 has exclusive use of a six-speed automatic that has been updated for improved fuel economy. On that point, the gains are nothing to sneeze at. The four-cylinder rates 8.2 l/100 km in the city and 6.3 on the highway (down from 9.0/7.0). The V6 improves to 10.1/7.1 from 10.9/7.8. Mitsubishi’s “Super All-Wheel Control” (code for all-wheel drive) can be ordered with four-cylinder Outlanders, but is standard with the V6-equipped SE and GT. •Base price (incl. destination): $27,450 •Type: Four-door tall wagon •Base engine (hp): 2.4-litre SOHC I4 (166) •Optional engine (hp): 3.0-litre SOHC V6 (224) •Layout: Front- /all-wheel-drive wagon •Transmissions: Continuously variable; sixspeed automatic (V6) •L/100 km (city/highway): 8.2/6.3 (2.4) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front-knee airbag; traction control; stability control. •Weight (kg): 1,460

Mazda3 continues to set the compact standard

Overall: The latest Mazda3 series sets the pace for all other compact cars with great looks, impressive powertrains and a comfy cabins. Drivetrain: The thrifty 155-horsepower 2.0-litre “SkyActiv” engine is augmented by an optional 184-horse 2.5-litre four-cylinder version; no sign of the top performing Mazdaspeed3 . . . yet. Mazda’s redesigned sedan and hatchback models now emulate the mid-size Mazda6 sedan and the CX-5 wagon, which means they no longer wear Cheshire-cat grins affixed to their snouts. Instead, both have adopted Mazda’s latest Kodo (Japanese for “Soul of Motion”) design approach that includes an attractive, but less gimmicky grille. The rest of the sedan and hatchback’s bodywork is equally tasty from any vantage point. Like its Mazda6 and CX-5 brand mates, the Mazda3 benefits greatly from the SkyActiv suite of structural and powertrain enhancements. The former includes a stiffer platform and finely tuned suspension and steering components geared sports-car-like precision. But the real show stoppers are the powerplants.

2014 Mazda3 The base engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder that makes 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. Optional is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. Both are available with six-speed manual transmissions, while six-speed automatics are optional. Interestingly, both engines are closely matched in fuel consumption, with the nod going to the 2.0’s official rating, with the

Mazda6

Overview: One of the best driving sedans on the market while pulling down great fuel economy. Drivetrain: A new direct-fuel-injection 2.5-litre four-cylinder replaces the previous four- and six-cylinder engines; a 173-horsepower 2.2-litre turbo-diesel option arrives part way into the 2014 model year. Always the rebel, Mazda refuses to offer a hybrid powertrain option. Instead, it pursues internal-combustion-engine refinement under the SKYACTIV label. From most angles, the Mazda6 is more expressive than the previous car and closely resembles Mazda’s Shinari and Takeri concept cars that revealed a new styling direction. The distance between the front and rear wheels has been increased by about five centimetres for extra passenger room, while overall length has been reduced by about the same amount. The base engine is a 2.5-litre fourcylinder that makes 184 horsepower and 185 pound-feet of torque. The uniqueness of the new four-cylinder is its higher-thanusual 13:1 compression ratio that gives the engine much of its extra punch. In addition, its specialized components, including the pistons and direct fuel-injection system, means it can run on regular-grade fuel. Transmission choices for both include a sixspeed manual that uses a MX-5 Miata-in-

2014 Mazda6

spired short-throw shifter, or the optional six-speed automatic. The base GX model that lists for $26,200, including destination charges, comes with the usual power and comfort ingredients and push-button start. It also comes with a touch-screen display with Bluetooth networking and a rearview camera. The mid-level GS increases the content level with dual-zone climate control, power driver’s seat and a power moonroof, while the GT bulks up with standard navigation, premium Bose-brand sound system and 19-inch wheels. Among the more interesting options is Mazda’s Intelligent Energy Loop (i-ELOOP). The system’s compact capacitor stores energy from the alternator, then feeds it directly to the car’s numerous electrical components. •Base price (incl. destination): $26,200 •Type: Four-door sedan •Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (184) •Optional engine (hp): 2.2-litre DOHC I4, turbo-diesel (173) •Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt.) •L/100 km (city/highway): 7.6/5.1 (AT) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. •Weight (lb.): 1,440

automatic transmission, of 6.7 l/100 km in the city and 4.7 on the highway. The 2.5 rings up 7.5/5.4, but both numbers improve to 7.1/5.0 with the optional “iELOOP” capacitor that stores electricity generated under braking. The system provides power for the 3’s various electrical components for extended periods while disengaging the alternator, which reduces drag on the engine. The driver is unaware

that i-Eloop is operating. Mazda3 prices start at $17,700 for the base GX sedan that includes the usual power-operated accessories plus push-button start. The base GX Sport hatchback starts at $18,700. Both body styles are also available in GS and GT trim, the latter fitted with enough standard and available comfort and safety content to rival many luxury vehicles. Regardless of your choice, the new Mazda3 is an impressive piece of work that will be appreciated by those who really enjoy driving something sporty, but without the space limitations that traditional sports cars impose. •Base price (incl. destination): $17,700 •Type: Four-door, front-wheel-drive compact sedan and hatchback wagon •Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (155) •Opt. engines (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (184) •Layout: Front engine, front-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.) •L/100 km (city/highway): 6.7/4.7 (2.0, AT) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags (opt.); anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control •Weight (lb.): 1,270

CX-5 Overall: Mazda has the smile-inducingfun-and-fuel-sipping part down in its CX-5; new engine adds power with no fuel penalty. Drivetrain: Base 2.0-litre 155-horsepower SkyActiv four-cylinder joined by larger, more potent 2.5-litre with 185 horsepower. Mazda’s divorce several years ago from Ford was probably the best thing for both partners, really. Rather than sharing their next-generation CUV as had been done for a decade, they’re now competitors. The attractively designed five-passenger CX-5’s mechanical bits are promoted under the “Skyactiv” name that made its initial appearance with the 2012 Mazda3. SkyActiv represents a holistic transformation of the powertrain plus various other components that help save fuel in addition to making Mazdas better driving machines. From a chassis and suspension perspective, the automaker’s engineers have attempted to infuse the vehicle with as much MX-5 Miatatype sporty behaviour as possible, combined with highly efficient engines and transmissions. The base powerplant is a high-compression 2.0-litre four-cylinder that, due to its unique design, runs on lowgrade 87-octane fuel. Output is rated at 155 horsepower and 150 pound-feet of torque. Mazda has added an optional 2.5-litre fourcylinder for 2014. It has 185 horses and 185

2014 CX-5

pound-feet of torque and doesn’t penalize much at the pump either. Both engines are available in front or all-wheel-drive, but the 2.0 is the only engine that can be had with a manual transmission. The base GX includes the 2.0 and the usual air conditioning and power-operated items, along with cruise control and push-button start. Head up the line and you’ll find the GS and GT models, both equipped with the 2.5. The top-end GT comes with a nine-speaker Bose-brand audio system, 19-inch wheels, standard all-wheel-drive, dual-zone climate control and leather seats. New for the 2014 model year is active smart braking technology that can see stopped cars in front and slow you down before a collision. •Base price (incl. destination): $24,900 •Type: Four-door CUV •Engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (155) •Optional Engine: 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (185) •Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheeldrive •Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 7.8/5.7 (FWD, MT); 8.3/6.2 (2.5, FWD, AT) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control •Weight (kg): 1,460

Ford Fusion remains a perfect mix of economy and beauty

Overall: With nary a six-cylinder engine in sight, the Fusion remains one of the best-looking sedans. Drivetrain: A 170-horsepower four-cylinder plus two optional turbocharged four-cylinders worth 179 and 237 horsepower; two versions of gasoline-electric hybrids. Talk about contrasts. The previous Fusion was a smart choice, but the current version adds a certain star power to draw in a much broader range of buyers. The posture of the overly upright-and-blunt nose takes some getting used to, but the overall shape with the sloped roofline is gorgeous. During the redesign, the Fusion abandoned its V6 options, but now there

are six distinctive engine picks, including two gasoline-electric hybrid systems. It all begins with a 170-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine, topping out with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder “EcoBoost” engine with 237 horsepower. The latter is optional but a requirement for all-wheel-drive Fusions. In between is a 1.6-litre EcoBoost that carries over for 2014, but joining the lineup is an all-new 1.5-litre EcoBoost. Both produce an identical 179 horsepower, but the big difference is that the 1.6 will now only be offered with a sixspeed manual transmission while the 1.5 picks up the slack with a sixspeed automatic. The 1.5 is billed

2014 Ford Fusion as the thriftiest of the three EcoBoost options thanks to auto startstop technology, but in terms of fuel savings, the Hybrid and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid are really where it’s at. Available communications and safety content includes lane-

monitoring system, adaptive cruise control, parking-spot assist and blind spot and cross-traffic alerts, while inflatable belts in the rear seats are optional for 2014. •Base price: $24,100 (2013) •Type: Four-door mid-size sedan

•Base Engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I6 (170) •Optional engines (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (179); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (237); 2.0-litre I4 with AC electric motor (188, net) •Layout: Front-engine, front- /allwheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt.); continuously variable (Hybrid) •l/100 km (city/highway): 9.2/5.8 (2.4, MT) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front knee airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control •Weight (kg): 1,490

Ford Escape

F-150

F-Series Super Duty

Overall: Lovely to look at and just as lovely to drive, in only two short years the latest Ford Escape is now a ubiquitous sight. Drivetrain: Plenty of engine choices, all of the four-cylinder variety in the name of fuel economy. The sleeker second-generation’s radically different sheetmetal is just one reason why the Escape is more popular than ever. Its slightly larger dimensions mean greater rearseat room plus slightly more passenger and cargo volume with the rear seat in place or folded flat. The interior is inviting, with an attractively segmented gauge/control panel with asymmetric air vents. The floor shifter’s position at the base of the dashboard makes the area designated for cupholders and armrest/storage more accessible. The up-level Titanium model features well-bolstered front seats that are a major advancement over that of earlier Escapes. The base front-wheel-drive S model runs with a 168-horsepower 2.5-litre four-cylinder, while the front- and all-wheel-drive SE designation uses a 178-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged EcoBoost four-cylinder. A 237-horsepower turbo four-cylinder is standard on the SEL and Titanium trims. A new “Intelligent” all-wheel-drive system can be ordered with the turbocharged models. It continually assesses road conditions and driver inputs “about 20 times faster than the blink of an eye” and can shift up to 100 per cent of the available power to either the front or rear wheels for maximum grip. The Escape is the first Ford to offer both Torque Vectoring Control and Curve Control to help distribute the correct amount of power to each wheel when cornering so that the vehicle maintains its intended path. The new-tech gear extends to the option sheet, but the most unique option is the power lifgate that automatically opens and closes when you shake your foot beneath the bumper. •Base price (incl. destination): $26,300 •Type: Four-door compact tall wagon •Base Engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4 (168) •Optional engines (hp): 1.6-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (173); 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (237) •Layout: Front-engine, front- /four-wheel-drive •Transmission: Six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 9.5/6.3 (2.5, FWD) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; traction control •Weight (kg): 1,590

Overall: With a new F-150 coming next year, the 2014 version makes the most of a few well-deserved tweaks; new Tremor is a twin-turbocharged sport truck that brings back memories of the long-gone SVT Lightning. Drivetrain: The F-150 borrows the 3.7-litre V6 and 5.0-litre V8 from the Mustang, along with a turbocharged 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 from the Flex/Taurus SHO; the 6.2-litre V8 from the off-road SVT Raptor can be had in upscale models. The segment-first high-intensity-discharge headlights that debuted on the Limited model for 2013 are now standard on every trim level, except the base models, while power-telescoping/folding towing mirrors inspired by the Super Duty are available too. All models get their own trim-specific grilles, bumpers and wheel designs; other changes for 2014 include a new grille for the FX package and chrome wheels for XLT and STX. Those wishing for a return of the SVT Lightning sport truck can now have the next best thing: the 2014 Tremor. It’s regular-cab short-box sport-truck powered by the 3.5-litre “EcoBoost” turbocharged V6. It uses flat-black accents outside, 20-inch wheels with low-profile tires and a steep rear-end gear for the best possible acceleration. At the other end of the spectrum, the Limited is available only as a SuperCrew four-door cab, the body-colour moldings, brightwork and 22-inch wheels are set off by an interior with heated and cooled red-and-black leather seats, aluminum trim and piano black accents that complement the new MyFord Touch screen on the dash. The Limited is exclusively powered by the popular 3.5-litre EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 with 365 horsepower. Those wanting traditional V8 power are spoiled, too, with 5.0-litre or 6.2-litre options readily available in most other trims. The sheer number of F-150 combinations is mind-boggling. •Base price (incl. dest.): $21,600; $57,600 (Raptor)(2013) •Type: Two- /four-door pickup •Base Engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (302) •Optional engines (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6, turbocharged (365); 5.0-litre DOHC V8 (360), 6.2-litre SOHC V8 (411) •Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 12.7/8.9 (3.7, 4x2) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags with rollover protection; anti-lock brakes; stability control •Weight (kg): 2,125

Overall: Ford’s Super Duty is the best-selling HD truck, but that doesn’t mean it’ll stand pat during a quiet year. Drivetrain: Powerplants consist of a 6.2-litre gas V8 and 6.7-litre turbo-diesel that produces 800 pound-feet of torque; six-speed automatic transmissions connect to both. Not content with having the most powerful and probably the most capable heavy-duty pickup around, Ford has worked some more magic to keep the stat-creep war with its rivals going strong. Every Super Duty gets larger brakes for the 2014 model year that are more effective at shedding heat. That means payload capacity is up to 3,290 kilograms while the conventional towing capacity tops out at 8,390 kilograms, which it claims is class-leading. Ford also aims its Super Duty trucks toward the higher end of the market. A fully loaded GMC Sierra HD 3500 with the Denali package starts just south of $50,000 and climbs higher quickly. Ford’s reply was to add a Platinum trim to the SD line with unique styling, different 20-inch wheels, chrome everywhere, while inside features wood trim and high-grain leather cover nearly every surface. Niceties include standard power-adjustable pedals, a rear-view camera, remote start and power telescoping mirrors. The Platinum also gets Ford’s SD-specific version of MyFord Touch, which has larger buttons and knobs for secondary controls that can easily be used with work gloves on. Otherwise, the standard 6.2-litre gasoline V8 that rules the roost with 385 horsepower and 405 pound-feet of torque remains unchanged. Optional is a 6.7-litre V8 turbo-diesel that generates a flat 400 horsepower and 800 pound-feet of torque. The engine can run B20 fuel, which contains 80 per cent petroleum diesel mixed with 20 per cent bio-diesel. Both powerplants are connected to six-speed automatic transmissions. For turbo-diesel applications, there’s an available “Live Drive” power take off (PTO) unit, consisting of an extra transmission output gear that can control accessories such as a snow plow, tow-truck lift or even a dump-truck-style box •Base price (incl. destination): $37,100 (2013) •Type: Two- /four-door heavy-duty pickup •Base Engine (hp): 6.2-litre SOHC V8 (385) •Optional engine (hp): 6.7-litre OHV V8, turbo-diesel (400) •Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): n/a •Safety: Front airbags; anti-lock brakes •Weight (kg): 2,670

Seven-passenger Acura MDX boosts fuel efficiency

Overview: Lighter, stronger, quicker and more fuel-efficient? How did Acura do it? Drivetrain: 290-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 replaces the 300-horsepower 3.7; Fuel economy is close to 20 percent better on the highway. This premium-grade seven-passenger wagon shares nothing with its predecessor and also breaks new ground in content, technology and fuel efficiency. Of course the shape and shield-type grille are giveaways as to the MDX’s origins. But a lower roofline, a eight-centimetre stretch between the front and rear wheels and a fivecentimeter gain in overall length makes it appear larger than the tape measure suggests. The new MDX conveys a stronger sense of luxury, especially with its “Jewel Eye” headlights that have become the signature styling item for the Acura brand. Although cargo volume has been slightly reduced, functionality has improved with added length behind the third-row seat. There’s also a flatter load floor when both

2014 Acura MDX rear rows are folded. Button clutter on the redesigned dashboard and control panel is reduced to nine from 41 as the rest are now incorporated into a console-mounted dial plus a touch-screen display for the audio, communications and climate-control systems. The previous MDX featured a firmed-

Acura ILX Overall: If Honda built a luxury version of its Civic sedan, the ILX is what it would look like. Drivetrain: Two four-cylinder engines to choose from as well as a gas-electric hybrid; front-wheel-drive only. If luxury is what the coming-of-age Generation Y gang yearns for, then Acura is only too happy to deliver. The ILX has the look and feel of upscale-ness, but shouldn’t cost a fortune as long as its youthful purchasers resist the lure of the options list. Although loosely based on the current Civic platform, the ILX has little in common with the Honda. From the front and side, the car’s high style is much evidence. However the short, rounded rear deck looks out of place with the rest of the design and results in a trunk of only modest proportions. At least the folding the back seat can extend the available stowage space. On the other hand, the interior has a first-class quality to it, especially the well designed dashboard, control panel and useful multi-information display that among other data provides average speed, fuel consumption and oil life info. Base iterations arrive with a 150-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that operates through a five-speed automatic transmission. For performance-minded millennials there’s the optional 201-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder that uses a six-speed manual gearbox (both purloined from the

2014 Acura ILX

Honda Civic Si) to keep the front wheels turning. At the socially conscious end of the lineup, the Hybrid combines its 1.5-litre four-cylinder with an electric motor to generate 111 net horsepower. All models include a power moonroof, keyless push-button start, rear-view camera and an audio system with an interface for subscriptionbased Internet music. New standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels (formerly 16’s), a multi-angle rearview camera and high-intensity-discharge headlights. The available Premium Package includes a power-adjustable driver’s seat, leather covered seats (heated in front), while the Technology package adds a 365-watt ELS-brand stereo and a voice-controlled navigation system. •Base price (incl. destination): $29,900 •Type: Four-door compact sedan •Base Engine (hp): 2.0-litre SOHC I4 (150) •Optional engines (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (200); 1.5-litre SOHC I4 with electric motor (111, net) •Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive •Transmission: Five-speed automatic (2.0); six-speed manual (2.4); continuously variable (Hybrid) •l/100 km (city/highway): 8.6/5.6 •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. •Weight (kg): 1,330

up ride and sporty steering, but customer feedback showed that that’s not the priority. The 2014 model goes the other way, with a more supple ride and lighter steering. The MDX drives like an upscale wagon should, but is in no way bouncy or sloppy over rough surfaces. Acura claims the more

aerodynamic body structure weighs about 55 kilograms less and, combined with other measures, contributes to a total 125-kilogram weight trimming (for comparison, the Audi Q7 is heavier by about 450 kilograms). A 290-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 replaces the 300-horsepower 3.7. Smaller, yes, but no one will be the wiser since the 3.5’s torque rating is within three poundfeet (267 at 4,500 r.p.m. versus 270 at 5,000 r.p.m.) of the 3.7. It’s also more fuel efficient, with ratings of 7.7 l/100 km on the highway and 11.2 in the city, bettering the previous 13.2/9.6. •Base price (incl. destination): $51,900 •Type: Four-door sport utility vehicle •Engine (hp): 3.5-litre SOHC V6 (290) •Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive •Transmission: Six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 11.2/7.7 •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. •Weight (kg): 1,940

Acura RDX Overall: Acura’s modestly sized five-passenger companion to the MDX wagon was new for 2013 and returns virtually unaltered for 2014. Drivetrain: A 273-horsepower V6 is the standard powerplant; six-speed automatic transmission takes care of the gear-changing duties. The RDX gives a good accounting of itself despite the range of competitors it must fend off. The significant physical adjustments that were introduced for the 2013 model year were simply the overture to the sweet sounds of a 3.5-litre V6 that replaced the turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder. The V6 puts out 273 horsepower and 251 pound-feet of torque, compared to 240 horses and 260 pound-feet of torque for the 2.3. More importantly, fuel consumption has been cut in the process. A six-speed automatic transmission also helps improve the l/100-km rating, but so do other fuelconserving innovations, including the use of low-viscosity engine and transmission oil, a special friction-reducing coating on the pistons and Variable Cylinder Management that allows the engine to operate with two or three of its six cylinders shut down under light-load conditions. Above and beyond its powertrain efficiencies, the RDX features wind-cheating aerodynamics, fuelsaving electric power steering and fuel pump, and low rolling resistance tires. The

2014 Acura RDX

RDX no longer employs Acura’s very effective Super Handling All Wheel Drive (SHAWD). However, the replacement system, called AWD with Intelligent Control, has its own merits, sending 25 per cent of the available torque to the rear wheels when accelerating from a stop, up to 100 percent to the front wheels at a steady speed and splitting the torque 50:50 when heading up a 15-percent (or greater) slope. It can’t send extra torque to the outside turning wheels like the SH-AWD could, but that’s at least partially offset by electronic powersteering and traction-control systems that reduce front- or rear-end plowing while turning. The RDX follows Acura’s traditional formula of offering plenty of luxury content, including a power moonroof, leathercovered interior, power-adjustable front seats and a 360-watt audio system. An optional Tech Package adds a navigation / rearview camera combo, and a premium ELS-brand 10-speaker sound system. •Base price (incl. destination): $43,100 •Type: Four-door compact tall wagon •Engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (273) •Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive •Transmission: Six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 10.7/7.3 •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control •Weight (kg): 1,750

MKC Concept a vision for the future of small luxury utility

Creating ‘Lincoln Experiences: Lincoln is being reinvented in every way — from a complete new lineup of stunningly designed vehicles to the level of personal client service provided by dealerships and how drivers engage with their vehicles. The goal is to appeal to ‘cultural progressives,’ a new type of luxury clients who are open to new ideas and experiences. This is the rationale behind the new MKC which will begin selling in the second quarter of 2014. The MKC brings Lincoln into the industry’s fastest growing small luxury utility market. Exterior design: The MKC Concept builds on the foundation of the

Lincoln Design DNA found in the new MKZ. These warm, open and inviting design cues are core elements of the brand’s heritage. “The MKC Concept has a wonderful stance and sits beautifully on its wheels,” said Murat Gueler, MKC Concept lead exterior designer. An uninterrupted, highly crafted rear-view appearance highlights the signature full-width taillamps. This is made possible by a liftgate design with a side-view cutline — a Lincoln first. The continuity also is apparent in the execution of the frameless windows, which amplify the richness of the design, as does the signature split-wing grille. The exterior is

2014 Lincoln MKC Concept augmented by warm, cream-based white metallic tri-coat paint, 20-inch premium wheels and a large fixed panoramic roof that runs the length of the vehicle. Interior design: High-end bespoke design, materials and execu-

tion inspire the four-passenger interior. Just like MKZ, the MKC Concept features a distinct push-button gear shift selector. This enables a flowing, expressive and architectural centre console design covered with riveting details, and unique

colours and materials. The headliner is wrapped with high-end material, providing a warm and luxurious feel. The pillars are wrapped with premium leather. The seats also feature premium leather. Other refined details include finishes like appliqués cut from layers of reconstructed natural wood infused with a metallic flake for a glistening effect on the steering wheel, upper instrument panel and door panels. A true Lincoln: The Lincoln MKC Concept is designed to strike a perfect balance between warm, inviting comfort and the engaging and superb dynamic qualities of performance, ride, handling and braking.

MKS

MKX

MKZ

Overall: After visual and mechanical changes to bring the full-size MKS sedan in line with other new Lincolns, there are very few changes on hand for 2014. Drivetrain: Base 3.7-litre V6 pushes past 300 horsepower and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission, while a 365-horsepower turbocharged EcoBoost V6 makes for effortless highway passing. Lincoln hasn’t had many major design themes in the last 20 years or so, but when the all-new MKZ sedan debuted in 2013 with its dramatic face, roofline and rear end, it was obvious that the carryover products needed to follow suit. That’s why the MKS received the flying-bird-shaped front grille and corresponding fascia, along with high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights. The back of the car received a revised deck lid, bumper and brighter LED taillights. All models use 19- or optional 20-inch wheels. The interior appointments hammer home the luxury but in a subtle way that also departs from Lincoln tradition. The dashboard incorporates an instrument panel with screens integrating the MyLincoln Touch system and Lincoln-Sync, a voice-activated system for controlling entertainment and communications devices. All MKS models get Lincoln Drive Control, a system that can alter the suspension settings, steering effort, shift feel and more from the cabin, and it also uses continuously controlled damping to adjust the suspension up to 20 times a second for a smoother ride. Lincoln endows the MKS with a wealth of comfort, convenience and techno-focused items, keeping the options list to a minimum. On the menu is radar-based adaptive cruise control, and a heat-sensing LED keypad that unlocks the vehicle from the outside. Lincoln offers blind-spot warning and crosstraffic alert. These features are in addition to climate control, rain-sensing wipers, rearview camera, front and rear proximity sensors, heated front and rear leather seats with power adjustment and a dual-panel moonroof. •Base price (incl. destination): $49,300 •Type: Four-door sedan •Base Engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (304) •Optional engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (365) •Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 11.6/7.5 •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control •Weight (kg): 1,870

Overall: As the Lincoln MKX grows its foothold in the SUV category. The bold version of the winged grille reminds us of the cool original patterned after the 1961 Lincoln Continental. Drivetrain: A 305-horsepower V6 is all you need, says Lincoln; six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift controls, and all-wheel-drive. Ford recently spun its Lincoln division into a separate category, which means that the era of Ford-based products sporting slightly different noses and added accessories will be come to an end. In the meantime there are vehicles like the Ford Edge-based Lincoln MKX. Lincoln’s engineers have worked to reduce outside noises from invading the MKX’s cabin by using better-quality acoustic materials, a sound-absorbing headliner, thicker windshield glass and “baked-on” foam baffles in the fenders and door pillars. On-road capability was upgraded with bigger brakes, retuned shock absorbers and stabilizer bars that are designed to produce flatter cornering. Standard equipment includes trailer sway control and Hill Start Assist. A 305-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 is the sole engine while a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle controls handles the shifting chores. All-wheel-drive is standard. Inside, most of the MKX’s traditional switchgear are part of the “MyLincoln Touch technology” screen. This standard system has two programmable 10.5-centimetre touch-screens on either side of the speedometer; and a 20-centimetre unit located in the centre stack. A game-controller-style “smart” button on the steering wheel operates the climate, communications, navigation, infotainment and other vehicle functions in a somewhat intuitively designed fashion. To help out, MyLincoln has colour-coded touch-sensitive controls of a type currently used in cell phones and TV remotes. There are also touch-based slider-type controls for the audio volume and ventilation fan speed. •Base price (incl. destination): $49,000 (2013) •Type: Four-door sport-utility vehicle •Base Engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (305) •Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive •Transmission: Six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 12.1/8.7 •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags with rollover protection; anti-lock brakes; stability control with anti-rollover software •Weight (kg): 2,010

Overall: It’s hard to imagine the modern MKZ ever looked old fashioned; Lincoln’s head-turning design is a winner. Drivetrain: Ecoboost turbocharged four-cylinder and optional 300-horsepower V6 available; Ford-Fusion-based hybrid delivers class-leading fuel performance. When Lincoln dropped the sheet on the production version of its new MKZ, there were plenty who wondered if they had left the concept up there instead. On sale in model year 2013, the signature “waterfall” grille was replaced by a series of horizontal bars. But for real design drama you can’t beat the sweep of the roofline that flows well past the rear-most roof pillar, almost to the trailing edge of the body. The car’s massive windshield and rear window glass, including the optional retractable panoramic sunroof, makes it doubtful passenger claustrophobia will pose a problem. Inside is an ultra-sophisticated leather-covered and wood-trimmed interior plus a floor console extending seamlessly almost the full length of the cabin. In the suspension department, continuously adjustable shock damping, power-assisted electric steering, variable transmission-shift-mapping plus traction and stability control all combine to form Lincoln Drive Control. The result, says Lincoln, is improved ride and handling in Normal, Sport, or Comfort modes, as selected by the driver. A push-button gear selector next to the gauges replaces the traditional floor shifter. Powerplant choices consist of a 240-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder EcoBoost (turbocharged) four-cylinder. Optional is a 300-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 that Ford installs in vehicles as diverse as the Mustang two-door and F-150 pickup. MKZ returns in an available gasoline-electric Hybrid model that’s fitted with a 141-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder combined with an electric motor. •Base price (incl. destination): $39,600 •Type: Four-door, front- /all-wheel-drive sedan •Base Engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (240) •Optional engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6, (300); 2.0-litre DOHC I4 with a 47-horsepower electric motor (200 combined, hybrid) •Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed automatic; continuously variable (Hybrid) •l/100 km (city/highway): 9.2/5.9 (2.0) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control •Weight (kg): 1,775

Volvo

S60 — Already one of the beauties in its class, Volvo isn’t letting up on the mid-sized S60 luxury sedan. The 2014 model year sees all the bits forward of the A-pillar replaced, including the fenders and hood, a sharper grille and different headlights with LED running lights. Every model also gets new wheel designs ranging from 17-19 inches in diameter, depending on trims. The cabin sees a new instrument cluster, new cloth-and-metal trim, and an illuminated shift-knob. Under the new hood is the same engine choices as before, meaning a turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder with 250 horsepower in frontwheel-drive models, and a 300-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six in all-wheeldrive versions. Every S60 gets a sixspeed automatic transmission, including the AWD R-Design. With a goosed-up T6 engine rated at 325 horsepower, it can hit 100 km-h from a standing start in less than six seconds. This model comes with lots of sport-sedan goodies, from more supportive seats and unique wheels to a lowered ride height and firmer suspension. The T5 is assigned a “Touring” chassis and the T6 AWD gets a “Dynamic” setup for more spirited driving. Base price (incl. destination): $40,850 l/100 km (city/highway): 9.9/6.5 (T5) S80 — The Sweden-based automaker unveiled a large-sedan concept that will likely take the current S80’s place, but we’re still waiting on word for when that will take place. Meanwhile the S80 gets a decent freshening, including a new grille flanked by revised headlights with LED running lights, plus new bumpers front and rear, LED taillights and new standard wheels at every trim level. Its two-engine lineup continues unchanged: the base engine is a transversely mounted 240-horsepower 3.2-litre inline six-cylinder in the frontwheel-drive S80 3.2. More thrust is readily available from the optional turbocharged 3.0-litre inline sixcylinder -- based on the 3.2 -- that cranks out 300 horsepower in the T6 AWD. Since this is a Volvo, there’s no shortage of crash protection including a pedestrian-protection system to reduce injury in the event of an impact, and a collisionwarning system that will take over the brakes if you’re too slow or incapable of acting to prevent an impact. Base price (incl. destination): $49,400 l/100 km (city/highway): 10.5/6.8 (3.2) XC60 — Volvo’s slick European design has always been the XC60’s hallmark and was the first to stick in the minds of shoppers where practicality isn’t an absolute priority. Like the rest of the company’s lineup, it’s getting a substantial

two-speed case in a Heavy Duty package. Base price (incl. destination): $60,000 (est.) l/100 km (city/highway): 12.5/9.0 (est.)

2014 Volvo S60 freshening. All the sheetmetal and details forward of the A-pillars is new, along with revised headlights and the ubiquitous LED running lights. The back end features new integrated exhaust pipes, skid plates and different wheel styles on every trim level. For the 2014 model year, the base XC60 carries on with a 240-horse 3.2-litre inline sixcylinder driving the front wheels. All-wheel-drive is an option, but it’s standard when you step up to T6 and its 300-horsepower 3.0-litre turbocharged engine. The R-Design model boasts a 325-horsepower version of the 3.0 and includes sharper steering and suspension settings plus 20-inch wheels. Of course there’s a high level of standard equipment, such as dual-zone climate control, along with a revised instrument cluster and new steering wheel, cloth-covered pillars, and revised shiny trim bits throughout. Base price (incl. destination): $41,100 l/100 km (city/highway): 11.2/7.8 (FWD) XC70 — Seeing as the XC70 is the closest thing you’ll find to a traditional Volvo, it’s no real surprise that it stuck around. However it gives buyers a choice of the modern-era XC60 tall wagon, or an XC70 “square back” that’s reminiscent of those brick-like Volvos of old. In the case of the XC70, the desired off-roader effect is achieved by bolting on front and rear skid plates to protect the radiator and running gear from damage, and by hiking up the suspension for an extra few centimetres of ground clearance. Also like the XC60, the XC70 gets all-new exterior pieces, including front fenders, headlights and LED running lights, grilles and bumpers and redesigned alloy wheels. The base 240-horsepower 3.2-litre six-cylinder is connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual-shift mode. The only optional engine is the 300-horsepower turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder. All-wheel-drive is standard across the line. Base price (incl. destination): $44,550 l/100 km (city/highway): 11.4/7.8 (3.2)

Land Rover

Evoque — Who would have thought that stodgy old Land Rover would be the one to sell a small SUV that looks like it rolled straight off the auto-show stage? With steeply raked windshields and ta-

pered rooflines, they’re some of the slinkiest, wind-cheating-est rigs around. Even so, with the vehicle’s minimal front and rear overhang and ample ground clearance, chances are it won’t get hung-up over uneven terrain or stuck in some muddy bog. Beyond being tough and good looking is the Evoque’s impressive fuel economy, which will be aided even more by the addition of a nine-speed automatic transmission that replaces the old six-speed. The 240-horsepower 2.0-litre turbocharged fourcylinder engine was previously rated at 10.9 l/100 km in the city and 6.9 highway with the six-speed, which made it a relative gas miser compared to other Land Rover models. Both acceleration and consumption are aided by significant weight-reducing measures that include the use of plastic front fenders and rear liftgate, aluminum hood and roof panels plus various lightweight suspension components. Base price (incl. destination): $48,500 (four-door); $49,200 (Coupe) l/100 km (city/highway): 10.9/6.9 (2013) LR4 — The LR4 is the most traditional thing Land Rover has going on. Boxy and upright, it still manages to look modern. New headlights, a two-bar grille and the expected LED running lights are the biggest changes outside. For a price a bit north of 60 grand, the LR4 remains luxurious and capable enough to hold its own against an increasing number of similarly priced competitors. Available as a five- or seven-seater, the asymmetric rear window continues to set this model apart from the pack. The sumptuous cabin provides a commanding view. Several features are designed to bring out the LR4’s luxurious side, including a standard rear-view camera and a surround-camera system that allows drivers to see every angle of their ride. The 375-horsepower 5.0-litre V8 and six-speed automatic transmission have been replaced with a new 340-horsepower supercharged 3.0-litre V6 and eight-speed auto. The new combination is shared with other Land Rover members. The Terrain Response system is still the best in the business. A consolemounted control knob can be set for general driving, grass/gravel/ snow, mud and ruts or rock crawling. A new single-speed transfer case is available, but those wanting serious off-road ability can order a

Range Rover Sport (New for 2014!) — This time around, the Sport shares an all-aluminum platform with the Range Rover rather than the bulky steel one under the LR4. In the process, it loses more than 350 kilograms over the previous generation. The distance between the front and rear wheels has been stretched by 17.5 centimetres, which aims to provide significantly more space inside the cabin, while overall length is up by seven centimetres. Its more athletic fastback body, wide stance and rubberband tires give the impression of a vehicle designed to never explore the rough stuff, but the Sport is more than capable of handling most anything you can throw at it. Under the reshaped hood you have a choice of two engine options: the base 3.0-litre supercharged V6 has 340 horsepower. The optional supercharged 5.0-litre V8, which is standard in the Supercharged and Autobiography series, now produces 550 horsepower instead of 510. Both use eight-speed automatic transmissions. For your base $75,500 entry fee, including destination charges, the SE includes a rather lengthy list of features and just about everything from Land Rover’s bag of off-road tricks. The HSE gets a few extras such as bigger wheels, perforated-leather seats and an upgraded 900-watt Meridian-brand audio system. Base price (incl. destination): $75,500 l/100 km (city/highway): 13.5/10.2 (est.)

Jaguar

F-Type (New for 2014!) — Four decades following the launch of Jaguar’s iconic E-Type sports car, Jaguar is introducing a brand new roadster. The result isn’t E-Type sleek, but its shape is more purposeful . . . in a Teutonic sort of way. There’s even an active rear spoiler that deploys once the FType has reached 100 km-h, then retracts once the roadster’s speed drops below 65. The cloth top returns to its latched and locked position in 12 seconds while the vehicle is traveling up to 50 km-h, so you don’t have to come to a complete stop in the middle of traffic or in the middle of a downpour. The seats are based on those installed in the high-performance Jaguar XKR-S model and actually don’t require the car’s occupants to be overly svelte to squeeze between the bolsters. Base F-Types are fitted with a supercharged 3.0-litre V6 that makes a respectable 340 horsepower. Jaguar claims it will push the F-Type to 60 mph (96 km-h) in 5.1 seconds. The F-Type S gets a 380-horsepower version of the 3.0 that cuts that time to 4.8 seconds. The F-Type

V8S has a supercharged 5.0-litre V8 that delivers 495 horsepower and zero-to-60-mph sprints in a mere 4.2 seconds. Base price (incl. destination): $78,400 l/100 km (city/highway): 10.4/7.1 (base V6) XF — If a four-cylinder XF luxury sedan didn’t sound very “luxury” to anyone, that’s OK because the 240-horsepower Ford engine is not on the table for 2014. Neither is rear-wheel-drive as all Canadian XF’s begin with a 340-horsepower supercharged V6 and all-wheeldrive for a good mix of fuel economy and stoplight performance. However, if nothing less than a supercharged V8 will suffice, the 510-horsepower version in the XFR returns unaltered for 2014. What does change is the new ultra-performance variant, the XFR-S, which adds the most dramatic body mods this side of a Subaru STI, with a rear wing to match. The car uses the same 550-horse version of the 5.0-litre V8 found in the new XJR and shares the eight-speed automatic transmission found in every other XJ. It’s the closest thing Jaguar has to a four-door track car, although there will only be 100 produced. Base price (incl. destination): $62,900 (XF AWD); $89,400 (XFR); $105,900 (XFR-S) l/100 km (city/highway): 13.1/7.7 XJ — Well, it only took a couple decades, but Jaguar finally gave its XJ luxury limo some more powerful claws up front for the 2013 model year, and followed it up with a rejuvenated XJR to take on Mercedes AMG and BMW M models. With luxury-car bragging rights at stake, the big spotted cat joined the segment leaders in making all-wheeldrive available for the first time. You can only get it with the supercharged 340-horsepower V6, which is now available in both regular an extra-long XJL Portfolio for model-year 2014. With the nonsupercharged mid-range V8 gone, that leaves the 470-horsepower supercharged 5.0-litre as the next step up the ladder in the XJ and XJL Supercharged models. New this year is the XJR, which has the highest output yet of the supercharged V8: 550 horsepower and 502 pound-feet of torque. It’ll hit freeway speeds from a standing start in only 4.4 seconds and uses unique springs and variable dampers to maintain its composure. The XJ’s structure uses 50 per cent recycled aluminum that contributes to a relatively light 1,800-kilgram base curb weight. The least expensive XJ is fitted with an impressive array of amenities that would rival even more expensive luxury conveyances, now including soft-close doors and more sumptuous trim around Base price (incl. destination) $90,400; $97,400 (XJL Portfolio) l/100 km (city/highway): 14.4/7.8 (V6)

Kia Forte combines great design with quality materials

Overview: Good design can’t be translated unless the build quality and materials are first rate. The Forte sedan and Forte5 hatchback showcase this philosophy. Drivetrain: Previously standard 156-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder base engine is relegated to optional status for sedans; new 148-horsepower 1.8-litre four-cylinder is the new starting point; Forte5 hatchback runs with the 2.0, or a 201-horsepower 1.6-litre turbo option. The Forte for 2014 has become fashionably sophisticated when it used to be play-it-safe conservative. That’s even more apparent when it comes to the new Forte5 hatch. The

new base 1.8-litre engine pumps out 148 horsepower and 131 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 2.0-litre four-cylinder produces 173 horsepower and 154 pound-feet of torque. For Forte5 buyers, the 2.0 is standard while a turbocharged 1.6-litre four cylinder is optional. A six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic can be connected to all three powerplants. The Forte or Forte5 is comforting for passengers and pleasing for the driver who faces an intuitively laid-out dashboard and control panel. He or she also has command over the level of steering effort with the Forte’s optional Flex Steer system. With it,

2014 Kia Rondo

Overall: Kia’s multi-tasking sedan returns from a brief hiatus with nifty styling and a thrifty drivetrain. Drivetrain: Solitary engine is a 2.4-litre inline-four-cylinder; six-speeds of the manual and optional automatic persuasions are offered. There aren’t many compact wagons that can get away with packaging three rows of seats that real people can actually sit in. The only other example that springs to mind is the Mazda5. The original Rondo was a decent competitor, but the new version is better looking, more functional and does more with a litre of gasoline. Fortunately it’s no longer the anonymously styled bubble of a wagon, but a smart-looking squared-off multi-purpose rig. The Rondo is exclusive to the Canadian market in that it remains out of reach for U.S. residents. It’s hard to fathom why not since it has a lot to offer, starting with a well-planned interior, that, when not transporting people around can be converted to a workhorse of cargo carrier. The second row is a tri-folding unit, while the optional third row is a 50:50 bench. Both rows fold as flat as a bowling lane and offer an impressive variety of people and cargo permutations. However there’s only one choice when it comes to powerplants: a 164-horsepower four-cylinder that can be had with a six-speed manual transmission, or optional six-speed automatic with steering-wheel paddle shifters. The base Rondo LX arrives well turned-out with about as much equipment as most Canadians would ever want or need. The rest can move up to the EX that adds push-button start (spares you from the effort of turning a key), backup camera, rain-sensing windshield wipers, portable cargo flashlight and a power extendable driver’s seat leg cushion. Along with the third-row seat, the top-end EX Luxury includes an electronic parking brake, 18-inch wheels (16-inchers are standard), leather seat covers that are heated and ventilated in front. A voice-activated navigation system and a premium audio package head the list of extra-cost add-ons. •Base price (incl. destination): $23,400 •Type: Four-door, front-wheel-drive wagon •Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (164) •Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive •Transmissions: six-speed manual; six-speed auto. 2014 Kia Optima Hybrid

Overall: As is the case with a number of Kia models, the Optima is on the receiving end of styling tweaks along with some new features. Drivetrain: All engines have four cylinders in regular, turbocharged and hybrid flavor, although the Hybrid’s gasoline-electric system gets a stronger battery pack that generates increased torque. The Optima drops to second place in Kia’s sedan hierarchy now that the larger Cadenza has arrived. However Kia is keeping the Optima fresh for 2014 with an updated front end with a slightly enlarged grille. In back there’s a revised trunk lid and a lower bumper area where the exhaust exits. Inside, the seat fabrics are upgraded and the dashboard updated with a larger high-resolution touch screen for the optional navigation and communications systems. Finally, the Optima offers blind-spot monitoring and cross-traffic alerts when backing up. The Optima shares the related Hyundai Sonata’s range of four-cylinder engines: the entry point is a 2.4-litre unit that produces a very healthy 192 horsepower, while an optional 274-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine quenches your thirst for thrust. The Optima Hybrid’s electric motor makes 47 horsepower supplied by a 47-kilowatt lithium-polymer battery pack. Fuel economy for the Hybrid remains nearly the same at 5.8 l/100 km in the city and 5.1 highway, better than the 2.4 gas engine’s 8.7 city/5.7 highway ratings. The hybrid can also travel at speeds of up to 100 km-h without assistance from its gas-engine partner. With six trim levels — base LX, LX+, EX+, EX Luxury and SX — the Optima ranges far and wide to satisfy a variety of budgets. Throw in a five-year warranty and customers should be beating a path to their local Kia dealer. •Base price (incl. destination): $25,800; $32,000 (Hybrid) •Type: Four-door sedan •Base Engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (192) •Optional engines (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (274); 2.4-litre DOHC I4 with electric assist (206, hybrid) •Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel-drive •Transmission: Six-speed manual, six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 8.7/5.7 (2.4, MT) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; brake assist; hill assist control; traction control; stability control •Weight (kg): 1,450

•Type: Four-door, front-wheeldrive compact sedan/hatchback •Base Engine (hp): 1.8-litre DOHC I4 (148) •Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4 (173); 1.6-litre DOHC-I4, turbocharged (201) •Layout: Front-engine, frontwheel-drive •Transmissions: six-speed manual; six-speed automatic (opt., std. on five-door) •l/100 km (city/highway): 8.0/5.3 (1.8, MT) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; antilock brakes; traction control; stability control •Weight (kg): 1,300s

Sorento

2014 Kia Optima Sorento

Overall: There’s plenty of unexpected newness beneath the Sorento’s familiar tall-wagon shape. Drivetrain: A 175-horsepower four-cylinder becomes the new base powerplant; a 290-horse V6 is optional, as is allwheel-drive with either engine. For 2014, the Sorento tall wagon receives a minor nose-job, including the ubiquitous mesh-style grille, updated headlights and optional fog lights, plus new taillight lenses. As well, Kia has mounted the Sorento on a platform that’s 18 per cent stiffer than that of the 2013 version. There’s also a stouter sub-frame that holds the powertrain more firmly in place as well as a new independent front suspension. In back, a more compact rear suspension adds interior space and reduces cabin noise and vibration. Inside there’s a new instrument panel and center control stack with easier-to-find buttons and knobs. Under the hood, a 175-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder powerplant that was standard for 2013 is replaced by the previously optional 191-horsepower 2.4-litre four-cylinder with direct injection. This means more complete combustion for added power and fuel economy. Optional is a 290-horsepower 3.3-litre V6. The available all-wheel-drive hardware is a full-time unit that constantly varies the torque to all four wheels and can direct power to the outer wheels in highspeed turning situations for added control. Along with the existing LX, and EX trims, Kia has added an SX model that includes a wood-trimmed interior with ventilated soft leathercovered seats on the inside, and self-leveling headlights and exclusive 19-inch wheels. The options list contains a power liftgate, panoramic sunroof, advanced voice-activated communications, infotainment and navigation controls and a blind-spot monitoring system that constantly tracks vehicles in the immediate vicinity and issues an audible and visual alert should any get too close. •Base price (incl. destination): $28,300 •Type: Four-door tall wagon •Base Engine (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (191) •Optional engines (hp): 2.4-litre DOHC I4 (191); 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (276) •Layout: Front-engine, front- /four-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 10.4/7.1 (2.4, FWD) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control •Weight (kg): 1,720

New Q50 Infiniti Sedan practically drives itself

Overview: The Q50 ratchets up the style by several notches over the outgoing G37; full suite of safety electronics means the car can almost drive itself; the all-wheel-drive hybrid is the hotrod of the bunch. Drivetrain: Choose from a 328-horsepower V6 or a 3.5-litre V6 combined with an electric motor for a total of 360 horsepower; both operate with a seven-speed automatic transmission and each can be had in rear- or all-wheel-drive. A new name and a slew of techno enhancements are the first clues that Infiniti’s Q50 sedan is something special. Visually, the Q50 is set apart by a hunkered-down stance that matches its sport-sedan status. A cabin that elevates tastefulness to a new level reaffirms the car’s luxury-vehicle cred. The Q50 runs with the same 328-horsepower V6 as the outgoing G37, however a new-for-2014 Q50 Hybrid combines a 302-horsepower 3.5-litre V6 with a 50-kilowatt electric motor (rated at 67 horsepower) to produce 360 total system horsepower. The Hybrid uses the same sev-

2014Infinity Q50 Sedan en-speed automatic transmission as the regular Q50, as opposed to a less-thansporting continuously variable unit found in most other hybrids. As well you can specify all-wheel-drive for the Hybrid, which is a feature not available in similarly propelled Lexus or Lincoln models. The

QX50

Overall: “Old” EX37 is now the “new” QX50, but other than new badging, it’s the same all-wheel-drive, all-weather wagon. Drivetrain: Infiniti’s potent 325-horsepower 3.7-litre V6 remains the sole engine; seven-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel drive for Canada. If you’re confused over Infiniti’s new naming system, you’re not alone. All SUVs and tall-wagons will start with QX and the number that follows dictates its relative position in the lineup, not its engine displacement. So the EX, which is essentially the G37 wagon in wolf’s clothing, will now be known as QX50. But other than the name adjustment and associated identification, there aren’t any changes to the package for 2014. That’s fine, though, since last year it gained Infiniti’s larger 3.7-litre V6 as the sole engine choice. Power is 325 horsepower, up significantly over the old 297-horsepower 3.5-litre V6. The only transmission remains the seven-speed automatic, and the QX50 can be had only in all-wheel-drive for Canada. Our neighbours to the south can opt for rear-wheeldrive. The interior of this five-seater is an inviting mix of organic shapes and attention to detail. Leather is standard. Of the technologies used, one of the most interesting is “self-healing” paint with the ability to, in a process that takes up to week (depending on surface temperature), ab-

sorb small scratches and return the finish to a close-to-new condition. The optional Around View Monitor uses four cameras to show a top-down view of the EX as you’re backing into a parking spot: there’s no excuse for bruising your bumper. As well, the optional lane-departure system warns when you’re unintentionally changing lanes and can help put the vehicle back where it belongs by automatically applying the left- or right-side brakes. For Canada, there is only one model and that’s the well-equipped Journey trim level. It gets the usual assortment of power/luxury/ heated/leather goodies including standard dual-zone climate control. Still, there are a lot of options, from crash-avoidance electronics and 19-inch wheels, to a power folding back seat, navigation and Bose premium audio system. •Base price (incl. destination): $41,500 •Type: Four-door wagon/hatchback •Base Engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (325) •Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive •Transmission: Seven-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 12.1/8.1 •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control •Weight (kg): 1,815

Hybrid rates an impressive 7.0 l/100 km in the city and 5.6 on the highway. Befitting of any luxury sedan, the Q50 arrives properly attired, however the Q50 Premium adds heated front seats, power moonroof and Bose’s 14-speaker audio system. The Q50 groups its crash-avoidance electronics

under the “Safety Shield” umbrella with the star of the show being a new steer-bywire system where the steering wheel is not hard connected to the front tires. The Q50 can also automatically brake when it sees the car in front of you slow down, or the car in front of that car slow down. That buys you extra stopping distance. Where many backup systems alert you to objects that are in your path, the Q50 will stop itself before you have a chance to react. •Base price (incl. destination): $39,500; $49,000 (Hybrid) •Type: Four-door sedan •Base engine (hp): 3.7-litre DOHC V6 (328) •Optional engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (302)/50-kilowatt electric motor (360, net) •Layout: Front-engine, rear- /all-wheel-drive •Transmission: Seven-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 20/30 (3.7) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control •Weight (lb.): 3,650

QX60

Overall: After only a year on the market, the JX35 becomes the QX60, but otherwise remains a slimmer, trimmer, more efficient wagon for luxury hauling; all-new Hybrid shares its gasoline-electric system with Pathfinder platform-mate. Drivetrain: Standard QX60 uses a 3.5-litre V6 with a continuously variable transmission; all-new Hybrid gets a supercharged 2.5-litre four-cylinder and electric motor combo; new front-wheel-drive model for Canada cuts the base price. The 2014 QX60 can carry up to seven passengers across three rows of seats, but due to its passenger-car construction and two fewer cylinders, it weighs about 360 kilograms less than the flagship QX80. In the flesh, the QX60 is an attractive piece, but is decidedly more wagon-like than Infiniti’s five-passenger QX70 and QX50 models. The QX60 is supported by a 3.5-litre V6 that produces 265 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. The continuously variable transmission has a “Sport” mode that simulates the gear-changing characteristics of a conventional automatic. Both front- and all-wheeldrive versions are available, the latter being an on-demand unit that directs 100 per cent of the engine’s torque under normal driving conditions, but can deploy up to 50 per cent of the available thrust to the rear wheels to maximize grip. Front-wheel-drive fuel economy is pegged at 10.5 l/100 km in the city

and 7.6 on the highway while the AWD is close behind at 10.9/7.8. For 2014, the new Hybrid uses a supercharged 2.5-litre fourcylinder paired with a 15-kW electric motor that combines to deliver 250 horsepower and 243 pound-feet of torque. Infiniti reports a combined city/highway rating of 7.2. Infiniti has made available most of its electronic safety and crash-avoiding accessories, including Backup Collision Intervention that can automatically prevent reversing into something. Other technology includes distance-maintaining cruise control, blind-spot warning and Active Trace Control that modulates the torque and braking at each wheel for optimum cornering. There’s also voiceactivated navigation, 13-speaker Bose sound system, front and rear sonar-based parking assist combined with a multi-camera Around View Monitoring with Moving Object Detection alert. •Base price (incl. destination): $44,450 •Type: Four-door tall wagon •Base engine (hp): 3.5-litre DOHC V6 (265) •Optional engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC I4, supercharged, w/electric assist (250, Hybrid) •Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheel-drive •Transmission: Continuously variable •l/100 km (city/highway): 10.5/7.6 (FWD) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control •Weight (lb.): 1,700

Subaru goes green with new XV Crosstrek hybrid model Overall: The “mini-Outback” that was celebrated for its bright space-shuttle-orange launch colour is turning a little greener for 2014 with a new hybrid model. Drivetrain: Impreza’s 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine with either a five-speed manual transmission, or optional continuously variable unit (CVT); new Hybrid is Subaru’s first and integrates a small electric motor into its standard CVT for added power and a slight uptick in efficiency. Although it shares its raised ride height and a substantial ground clearance, the XV Crosstrek leaves the serious business of offroading to its larger Forester cousin. Heavily based on the Impreza hatchback, Subaru has provided the XV Crosstrek with its own distinctive nosepiece, bumpers, roof rails, side cladding and rear spoiler. The meaner macho look is completed with darker window tinting and a set of 17-inch all-season tires mounted to custom-look wheels. The XV Crosstrek is fired up with a 148-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine that comes straight out of the Impreza. The new-

2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid for-2014 Hybrid uses the same CVT only with an electric motor included that’s worth 13.4 horsepower and 48 pound-feet of torque. This is very much a “mild” hybrid system as the electric motor is used only when accelerating from rest, and it can be called upon to assist the 2.0-litre engine if needed. Subaru says it will also function in

Forester

Overview: Subaru’s all-wheel-drive wonder-wagon adds refinement, reduces fuel consumption and keeps price low. Drivetrain: The returning 2.5-litre fourcylinder puts out 170 horsepower, while an all-new turbocharged 2.0-litre ups the pony count to 250; A six-speed manual transmission for base models, or optional continuously variable unit. Through clockwork-regular updating, the Forester has evolved into a steady performer that treats its passengers well and totes their belongings with ease. On good roads and bad, the standard all-wheel-drive operates virtually unnoticed. But when the need arises the vehicle’s mountain-goat capabilities make it a popular choice. The Forester sits on a new platform that modestly stretches the distance between the front and rear wheels for a bit more rear leg room, while a taller roofline and lower load floor add somewhat more cargo volume with the split-folding rear seat folded flat. The carryover 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine generates 170 horsepower and 174 poundfeet of torque. The design is tough, compact and provides a very low centre of gravity to limit that tippy feeling. For added punch, the 2.0XT uses a turbocharged version of the 2.0 that’s found in the BRZ sports coupe, rated at 250 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The 2.5i has a sixspeed manual transmission, or a continu-

ously variable (CVT) option. The 2.0XT only comes with the CVT, but it has what Subaru calls its “engine performance management system” with Intelligent, Sport and Sport Sharp settings. In Sport mode, the throttle becomes more responsive and the steering-column-mounted paddle shifters mimic the action of a six-speed transmission. Standard on the 2.0XT and available on the 2.5i with the CVT is Subaru’s XMode control. When activated at speeds below 20 km-h, the system adds greater control on slippery surfaces by shifting torque specifically to the wheels with grip. For Canada, the trim levels and names depend on the engine chosen, but all Foresters arrive reasonably well equipped. •Base price (incl. destination): $27,650 •Type: Four-door wagon •Base engine (hp): 2.5-litre DOHC H4 (170) •Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC H4, turbocharged (250) •Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive •Transmission: Six-speed manual; continuously variable with opt. paddle shifters •l/100 km (city/highway): 9.4/7.1 (2.5, MT) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; front-knee airbag; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. •Weight (kg): 1,480

electric-only mode in some specific stopand-go situations. Hybrid fuel consumption is rated at 6.9 l/100 km in the city, compared with 8.2 for the gas-only model with the CVT. Both non-hybrid and hybrid models with CVTs share all-wheel-drive systems: the Active Torque Split setup maintains a 60:40 division, front to rear, but au-

tomatically directs up to 100 per cent of the torque to either set of wheels when necessary. Other Hybrid additions include active grille shutters to keep the air out at highway speeds, lightweight 17-inch wheels to save fuel, along with more standard equipment such as a rear-view camera, heated seats and exterior mirrors and a display that shows exactly how the hybrid system is working. •Base price (incl. destination): $26,150; $31,650 (Hybrid) •Type: Four-door hatchback •Engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC H4 (148) •Optional engine (hp): 2.0-litre H4 with 13.4-horsepower electric motor (148, Hybrid) •Layout: Front-engine, all-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Five-speed manual, continuously variable (opt.) •l/100 km (city/highway): 8.2/6.0 (CVT) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control •Weight (kg): 1,400

BRZ

Overall: Rear-wheel-drive sports coupe has been a big hit since introduction, so why mess with success? Drivetrain: The 200-horsepower fourcylinder gets by with a little help from Toyota’s tech department; a six-speed manual transmission or available six-speed automatic. When Subaru announced it was partnering with Toyota to create a sports car that only sends power to its rear wheels, the brand faithful were concerned. Once they got the chance to sample the finished product, though, they were hooked. The BRZ is simply excellent. Toyota is experienced at making sporty coupes but hasn’t headed down that road for years. In Subaru’s case, its last effort was the 1990s-era premiumpriced SVX. This time the BRZ faces formidable competition. In this class, one of the BRZ’s primary advantages is weight, or rather a lack of it. At just 2,760 pounds (1,275 kilograms), the Subaru weighs about 500 pounds (225 kilograms) less than the Genesis and anywhere from 7001,000 pounds (about 300-450 kilograms) less than any V6-equipped North American example. Although the extra-stiff platform is completely new, much of the suspension pieces originate with the Impreza and its performance-focused WRX STI variant. A quick steering ratio that’s more in tune with the BRZ’s sporty nature has also been

installed. To aid turning and cornering capabilities, the 200-horsepower 2.0-litre engine is positioned closer to the center of the vehicle and sits lower to the ground than similar powerplants due to its horizontally opposed design, thus lowering the car’s centre of gravity. A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while a six-speed automatic is available. The latter features manual paddle shifters, rev-matching downshifts plus a “sport” mode that, by activating a switch on the floor console, delivers quicker shifts. In the flesh, the BRZ looks flat-out terrific with its properly planted stance, prominently bulging fenders and generously sized windshield. In back, the twin exhaust pipes encased in a blackedout diffuser are a neat touch. The cabin/ dashboard design isn’t quite as impressive, but is nonetheless straightforward and clearly presented. •Base price (incl. destination): $28,950 •Type: Two-door coupe •Engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC H4 (200) •Layout: Front-engine, rear-wheel-drive •Transmissions: Six-speed manual; sixspeed automatic (opt.) •l/100 km (city/highway): 9.6/6.6 (MT); 8.3/5.9 (MT) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control •Weight (kg): 1,275

The Daily News, Kamloops

2014 Sierra’s new look makes a bold statement

Overall: From top to bottom, it’s as new as it gets, right down to three new engines. Drivetrain: Three engines all have aluminum cylinder blocks and direct fuel injection that makes big difference to power and fuel economy; six-speed automatic transmissions for all; V6 makes nearly 300 horsepower and is standard for every cab style and two- /four-wheel-drive. For 2014, the Sierra continues with its own style and attitude, although the “attitude” part is hard to define, exactly. More basic GMC models accentuate the “Professional Grade” tag and the pitch is directed at buyers who rely on their pickups to earn a living. At the opposite end of the scale is the Sierra Denali. The Sierra’s entire front end, including grille, headlights, bumper and inyour-face GMC logo, are massive and make a bold statement. As you scale the trim-level ladder the appointments become more luxurious, especially in the four-door crew-cab models. Improvements in aerodynamics, insulation and weather sealing help shut out intrusive noises. Just as a greater use of alu-

2014 GMC Sierra minum in fabricating various body panels and suspension parts has kept the Sierra’s weight in check, the three new engines also benefit. All use aluminum cylinder blocks and incorporate direct injection, whereby fuel is force-fed into the cylinders under high pressure to tailor the fuel load for specific uses. There’s also continuously variable

Mercedes-Benz CLA

Overview: Mercedes-Benz has devised a gorgeous entry-level sedan that borrows the platform and turbocharged engine from its A- and B-class small wagons. Drivetrain: The base CLA’s turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder makes 208 horsepower; AMG version squeezes 355 horsepower out of a specially constructed version of the turbo 2.0. The CLA is a sedan that almost anyone searching for a luxury vehicle can afford. The car’s sporty body cladding and other trim makes it appear far from a strippeddown basic-transportation module, although with a sticker price that’s a few bucks north of 35 grand, it’s priced like one. Other than being pulled by the front wheels thanks to a platform and mechanicals borrowed from the B-Class, what’s most unusual about the CLA is that it doesn’t offer the kind of roomy practicality that’s a given when it comes to nearly every mid-size sedan. That’s because Mercedes stylists drew their inspiration from the larger CLS-class faux coupe that remains one of the most imitated models on the planet. The CLA’s aero design looks pencil-sharp. The CLA 250 comes with a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder that produces 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque at an engine speed that’s just above idle. This helps propel the car to 100 km-h from

rest in quick 6.5 seconds, as recorded by Mercedes-Benz. For fuel thriftiness, the CLA 250 uses technology that shuts off the engine when the car comes to a stop. Once the brake pedal is released, the CLA starts up again. The CLA 45 AMG also features a turbocharged 2.0, except that the block has been strengthened and a higher-output turbocharger produces nearly twice the boost of the CLA 250’s. The result is a stout 355 horsepower and 322 pound-feet of torque. That’s an astounding 177 horsepower per litre of displacement, while the new Corvette is less half of that at 73. The AMG is expected to shave the CLA’s zero-to-60mph times by about two seconds. Both models use a seven-speed automated manual transmission with paddle shifters.. •Base price (incl. destination): $36,000; $51,900 (AMG) •Type: Four-door sedan •Base engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (208/355) •Layout: Front-engine, front- /all-wheeldrive •Transmissions: Seven-speed automated manual •l/100 km (city/highway): 7.8/5.1 •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. •Weight (lb.): 1,480

valve timing for improved low- and highspeed performance, while half the cylinders in V8 engines will automatically shut down in steady-state cruise conditions to save fuel. The V6 engine also runs on four cylinders in such situations. The base 4.3-litre V6 might have the same displacement as before, but now makes 285 horsepower and 305

pound-feet of torque. The old iron 4.3 was good for just 195/260 pound-feet. Mated to a standard six-speed automatic transmission, fuel consumption is cut by almost 2.0 l/100 km in the city and 1.5 on the highway. V8 choices consist of a new 5.3-litre unit with 355 horses and 383 pound-feet, up from 315/335, and a 6.2-litre piece rated at 420/450. It’s standard in the fancier Sierra Denali, not to mention a rather substantial list of content that includes unique 20-inch chrome and wood and leather innards. •Base price (incl. destination): $28,200 •Type: Full-size pickup •Base engine (hp): 4.3-litre OHV V6 (285) •Optional engines (hp): 5.3-litre OHV V8 (355); 6.2-litre OHV V8 (420) •Layout: Front-engine, rear- /four-wheeldrive •Transmission: Six-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 11.9/8.4 (4.3) •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; side-curtain airbags; anti-lock brakes; traction control; stability control. •Weight (kg.): 2,240

Mercedes-Benz B-Class

Overall: Forget the dowdy and boring original, the newest B is a real peach. Drivetrain: Standard turbocharged fourcylinder engine makes 208 horsepower; seven-speed automatic directs it to the front wheels. Canadians have had access to MercedesBenz’s only front-wheel-drive car for six years, although it wasn’t really tops in class. Although the second-generation launched in 2013 closely resembles the previous BClass, there are some obvious sheet-metal changes that gave it more flair. The “B” is also a bit longer and wider than before and the distance between the front and rear wheels has been slightly elongated. The interior has a rich look about it that’s typical for most Mercedes-Benz products, but not necessarily for vehicles in the low-$30,000 price bracket. Included as standard are leather upholstery, climate control, electronic parking brake, ambient mood lighting and 17-inch run-flat tires that do away with the spare tire. The option list runs the gamut including upgraded interior furnishings, audio/communications systems and other luxuries. The standard 2.0-litre DOHC turbocharged engine produces 208 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and is matched with a seven-speed automatic transmission that takes over from the previous five-speed manual and continu-

S31

ously variable units. The new powertrain is much thriftier as well, but like all M-B products it prefers to drink from the highoctane fuel pumps. A stop-start function helps lower fuel consumption by shutting the engine off when you’re stopped in traffic, starting it up again when you let off the gas pedal. Given that the new B-Class sells at the same price point as the old non-turbo model, the wealth of added performance and comfort items makes it one of the best bargains around. Given its ‘fresh-paint’ feeling, there are few upgrades for the 2014 model year, although some optional features have been shuffled around slightly. •Base price (plus destination): $32,600 •Type: Four-door hatchback wagon •Engine (hp): 2.0-litre DOHC I4, turbocharged (208) •Layout: Front-engine, front-wheel drive •Transmission: Seven-speed automatic •l/100 km (city/highway): 7.9/5.5 •Safety: Front airbags; side-impact airbags; head-protection curtains; rear side-impact airbags; anti-lock brakes; stability control; anti-lock brakes •Weight (kg): 1,475
