Christmas has extra rewards for shoppers Those who have taken advantage of the annual Christmas Cash Card shopping know it’s the best way to shop for Christmas presents. Not only they find a wide assortment of

unique gifts for everyone on the shopping list, but they reap a few rewards for themselves along the way. The Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association’s contest makes shopping not only fun, but even more sensible. By dropping your completed card into a draw box, you earn a chance to win one of four $250 gift-certificate packages. You also get a shot at a $1,000 shopping spree from participating merchants downtown. The grand prize winner will

be drawn just before Christmas, live on CFJC’s Midday show. To participate, pick up a card and shop at any of the designated merchants. Then, for every $20 you spend, you receive a stamp, up to five stamps per purchase. On double-stamp days, you receive exactly that: two stamps for one, making a good shopping experience even better. Pick up your Cash Cards at any participating merchant and drop them off when completed at: The Daily News at Fourth and Sey-

mour; The Golden Buddha on the 300-block of Victoria Street; High Country Stained Glass on the 600-block of Victoria Street; Kamloops Florist in Kamloops Square; Torino Clothing on the 200-block of Victoria Street; Essentials and Beyond on the 300-block of Victoria Street; Cooper’s Foods, downtown; Fudge Yeah on the 400-block of Victoria Street.

Do you hear those sleigh bells jingling? Santa Claus Parade Nov. 24 annual Santa Claus The 32nd Parade is Saturday, Nov. 24

at 11 a.m. This years theme is the Kamloops Bicentennial, celebrating a 200-year shared history of the Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc and the first inhabitants of Fort Kamloops. A lot of work from people throughout the community goes into the parade. Not only do participants work tirelessly on floats and entries but there are more than 75 volunteers behind the scenes making sure everything runs smoothly. Children big and small wake up early parade day, bundle up and come out to secure their spot on the street. We want to remind everyone to come and cheer for the participants. The day kicks off at 10:30 a.m. at Kamloops Square with Wake Up Santa and the parade starts promptly at 11 a.m. The route is unchanged, starting on Second Avenue and moving east on Victoria Street to Sixth Avenue. There should be close to 10,000 people downtown on parade day. Businesspeople are reminded to arrive early for parking and to alert staff and customers that street closures will create some parking and traffic challenges as well as transit changes. Carpooling and public transit are good options. Remember that parade day is double-stamp day for Cash Card participants. For more information, visit www.christmastown.ca. See you there at the parade!

SANTA CLAUS PARADE Jami Chase and daughter Aria, 4, enjoy a Santa Claus parade along Victoria Street. Thousands of people of all ages turn out to watch the parade every year.

Donations to Kamloops Food Bank to get special care One of the many ways we can help the less fortunate this Christmas season is through donations to the Kamloops Food Bank. And we have a new way of making those donations a part of the season’s festivities.

Bring your donations to Kamloops Square (if you’re new to town, that’s the 200-block of Seymour Street) during the Lights in the Night party, or during the Santa Claus parade, or when you bring the kids to wake up Santa in Kamloops Square on Satur-

day morning. This year, watch for the giant “Christmas parcel” in the parking lot near the road — that “parcel” is a Big Steel Box, courtesy of Big Steel Box in the Mt. Paul Industrial Park. The Big Steel Box will be festively

adorned by Kamloops Food Bank staff and supporters, so you won’t have any trouble finding it. And there will be some creative assistance available to help you get your donation up and over into the box.

p Near the other end of the busiest shopping area, Aina Organic Massage and Spa breathes new life into the 100-block Victoria St. Aina, a Hawaiian word pronounced “eye-na,” specializes in a Hawaiian massage that promotes “relaxation and physical rejuvenation,” as receptionist Pauline Roode explained it. Therapist-owner Nicola Diepdael, who was trained at the Maui School of Therapeutic Massage, offers facials, pedicures, deep-tissue massage, reflexology, hot-stone treatment and prenatal massage. Even that’s only a partial list, and Pauline says that includes time to relax in the comfortable lounge before and after an appointment. The hardwood floor, soft sage paint, and wall of exposed brick that harkens back a century contribute to a peaceful environment that’s evident as soon as one walks in the door. Among the many massage techniques Aina offers is “customized massage for whatever the client needs at the moment,” said Pauline. That may be deep-tissue massage to address the aches and pains that come and go, migrate through the body, or get progressively worse without treatment. Continued on S12

The other big seller in the tin lunch boxes is Betty Boop, the first animated sex symbol, who turned 82 this year. “She’s really coming back,” said Ernie. Fudge Yeah, at 442 Victoria St., joins a growing list of “great businesses down here,” as Ernie puts it. “The life down here is better and better, and so’s the business atmosphere.” Fudge Yeah opened in June in time for the bulk of the summer tourist trade, but sports tournaments and other events at Interior Savings Centre and Memorial Arena also contribute.

Whatever the need, Aina staff have the techniques and experience to bring about the change you need. p Another enterprise that has enriched downtown’s business community since it opened in January is The House of Carmond for hair design. There can’t be many businesses in which the owners, the staff and even customers helped set up the shop by painting, building furniture, designing and decorating. But that’s the way it all went for The House of Carmond. Co-owner and hair stylist Ray Salmond, who specializes in artistry in hair design, speaks with passion about his industry and enterprise. Kamloops was just a transition for the Fort St. John native. He was on his way to Vancouver 15 years ago. But he liked the city, made friends quickly and found work he liked. The roots went down and here he stayed. Ray describes his attractive, upscale shop as “exactly what I wanted. I’m completely happy with the location.”

Receptionist Ghislaine Girar, who Ray also considers a mentor, had her take on the shop’s unique appeal. “What you pictured,” she said to Ray, “is what you did. “And many clients helped. We made the furniture,” she said, running her hands over the salvaged, re-purposed solid-wood reception counter. “The furniture is handmade.” Visitors can detect that Ray’s also happy with his co-workers. They, and his clientele, are ”family,” and staff and customers smile their agreement. Ray is a colour specialist and Joico educator, teaching other stylists how to use Joico products to get the best results possible. That aspect of his career is part of the “art, hair, passion” that he considers a motto for the business. “We’re not just sylists; we’re art- ists making the industry better.” Continued on S15

Christmas on the Square Parneet Lehl, 5, at right, checks out a bell on a walking stick belonging to Father Christmas. Parneet and his brother, Jason, 7, were keeping warm with hot chocolate while enjoying the 2011 Downtown Kamloops Lights in

the Night Christmas Party. Fireworks, wagon rides and a light-up ceremony are some of the attractions at the annual event centred at St. Andrew’s on the Square at Seymour Street and Second Avenue.

New enterprises downtown Continued from S12 “And clients are totally happy,” added Ghislaine. “They always come back.” p The Yoga Loft only opened in August but already has a full slate of general and specialty classes. Occupational therapist Marcia Wilson, who owns Yoga

Loft with her husband Claude Mey, is committed to helping people restore and maintain their health and mental well-being through yoga. She ran the multiple-sclerosis society in Kamloops for years and cares deeply for those who deal every day with disease. Yoga can help them cope.

But even “people who are sitting all day — they develop body aches and pains,” she pointed out. Yoga’s stretching techniques, methodical breathing and mental relaxation addresses such pains in unique ways. Marcia is enthusiastic about studies that show exercise can “physically change your brain.”

With classes for pregnant women, family classes, kids, adults only, “every age group,” Yoga Loft has lessons for everyone. The Yoga Loft is in the Elks Lodge building that used to be Cactus Jack’s Saloon, where the sign still hangs on Seymour Sreet at Fourth. Continued on S16

HEY, HEY! CHRISTMAS HAY RIDES

Doug Mills of Mills Ranch pilots a tractor for last year’s hay rides downtown. The wagon was filled with enthusiastic riders several times at the Lights in the Night Christmas Party, hosted by Kamloops Central Business Improvement Association. Rides are free, courtesy of Cactus Jack’s Saloon and Erin Valley Stables. Downtown merchants are hosting customer-appreciation events to complement the evening’s activities and festivities. The downtown Christmas party is centred on St. Andrews on the Square.

New enterprises downtown Continued from S15 p The Electrictree Yarns, a knitter’s delight, opened in September last year on Third Avenue between Seymour Street and Victoria Street. It may qualify as the ultimate hobbyist’s shop. For those who are into knitting and weaving, this small yarn-specialty store can’t be overlooked. It’s the product of a mother-daughter team of exceptional hobbyists. Patricia Donnelly and daughter Caroline Dick are fibre artists who even dye their own yarns. “You can’t get this anywhere else,” said Patricia, holding up some extravagantly rich, multicoloured yarn. “You can only buy that here.” It’s “labour intensive,” she agrees, “but it’s a hobby. We’re workaholics and we love what we do.”

(It shows in her smiling face.) The Electrictree could also be called the eclectric tree because it carries fair-trade alpaca yarn from a Quechua women’s co-operative in rural Peru, and unrelated tea from Salt Spring Island. Why the tea? “Because it tastes good,” Patricia said. Kamloops will probably hear more about the Electrictree when downtown trees get yarnbombed next year. Yarn bombing is catching on in cities wherever there is an enthusiastic body of knitters. They cover trees, hydrants, signs and whatever they can with yarn. Do trees need sweaters? Maybe they do. Stay tuned to downtown.

Iron Orchid Design: home décor and more they put to good use every day. And the shop features only things that they themselves enjoy. There’s no chain-store buyer in Toronto dictating what to carry. Everything they offer is something they enjoy. That includes the business itself, which provides the two moms the freedom they need to provide for their families, including time to spend with their children. “This is something we love doing,” said Wynona. “And it’s less stress.” “Well, it’s a different kind of stress,” added Jada. “A healthier stress.” Certainly, the positive comments from customers and browsers in the two months since opening relieve some of the stress of opening their own business.

Leading to Christmas, Iron Orchid’s owners are planning workshops to make wreathes and centrepieces, as well as a variety of other craft classes. It’s a way of connecting artists with those who appreciate craftsmanship and social networking. Ladies’ nights will offer lessons on makeup application and personal care. It fills a niche, they believe, and provides more networking opportunities. The Brittons expect to build their business online as well, shipping to website customers and tourists such as Rocky Mountaineer rail tour passengers.

“We go to flea markets, auctions, garage sales. We buy online.” “New, used and refurbished,” said Wynona. And while “refurbished” is the right word, Jada likes to use “redesigned” because they come up with creative ways to make artistic and practical improvements that give old cabinetry and tables a new look. The new look complements the furniture’s new lease on life and makes it unique, a true one-of-akind. The sisters are comfortably at ease with their eclectic décor, partly because their mother, Lee McNabb, is an antique collector, so they grew up with the concepts and appreciation of heritage items. From their father, carpenter Mark Britton, they picked up refinishing skills that

“W

e always said that, one day, we would do this — open our own shop.” said Jada Britton. “Then I wondered, ‘Why keep saying one day?’ Why not just do it?” And thus was born Iron Orchid, a Seymour Street shop lovingly dedicated to home décor, redesigned heritage furniture, and artistry in numerous forms, including jewelry from regional artisans. Some of Jada’s paintings adorn the walls, and while they serve to decorate, they’re all saleable merchandise. Jada, who has a bachelor’s degree in fine arts, and her sister Wynona Britton, also an established artist, created the shop at 408 Seymour St. out of pieces of other people’s lives.
